00:00:16 --> 00:00:18 but when she was reading that Isaiah reading,
00:00:18 --> 00:00:21 25 years ago I was a student minister at Currajong
00:00:21 --> 00:00:27 and I was in the old church with wooden floors like this
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 and being a student felt like I needed to colour my sermon even more
00:00:32 --> 00:00:34 than what the ministers would normally do.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:37 So I brought my axe into church and at the moment when you raise the axe,
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 you know, the king of Assyria is just an instrument in my hand,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 I put it down on the pulpit, slipped off and went bang on the floor.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 And I don't think they remember anything else about the sermon
00:00:48 --> 00:00:50 except what happened with the axe that morning.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:51 Anyway, let's pray.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:55 Thank you, Father, for bringing us together.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:59 Father, please warm our hearts, strengthen our hearts
00:00:59 --> 00:01:01 from your word this morning.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 Grow us in Christ and grow us in a mindset
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 that helps us in thinking who we are as believers,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:11 especially in the work that we do.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 And we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:19 One of our church family spoke to me a few weeks ago
00:01:19 --> 00:01:20 about their employment
00:01:20 --> 00:01:24 and they told me what life was like in their workplace
00:01:24 --> 00:01:25 as a believer.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 And you'd have to say their work for them is like,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 is probably like a love-hate relationship
00:01:35 --> 00:01:37 with the emphasis being more on hate.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 They work with a persecuting boss
00:01:41 --> 00:01:46 who has a particular set of prejudices towards Christians.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 Their boss has been exposed to pretty terrible hypocrisy
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 of churches
00:01:53 --> 00:01:56 as their boss has gone about their work.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 They've seen it and had to bear with it.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:01 And because of that,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 his boss's attitude towards our brother
00:02:04 --> 00:02:06 may well affect his ability to progress
00:02:06 --> 00:02:08 in his workplace
00:02:08 --> 00:02:11 because they've summed him up
00:02:11 --> 00:02:13 and applied their mind to what they think about him
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 in the light of their experience of Christians.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:18 And yet at the same time
00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 before his boss became his boss,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 he had been given great responsibility in his work.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 He has oversight of a number of people.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 He told me about two women in particular
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 that were causing grief and dysfunction in the office.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 They literally hated one another.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 He picked his moment.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 He'd been praying about it.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:42 He went to one of the women
00:02:42 --> 00:02:43 and he said,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 I want to ask you to do something
00:02:45 --> 00:02:47 that I think you'll find very difficult.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 You aren't too busy at present.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:55 That woman over there,
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 she's quite overloaded.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:02 Not now, but later when I'm not looking.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 Would you go to her
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 and ask her
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 if there's anything that you can do
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 to help her and ease her load?
00:03:10 --> 00:03:16 Short story.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:20 Later on, he saw from a distance
00:03:20 --> 00:03:21 her do what he'd asked
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 to go to that woman.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 They shared the work.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 A friendship has grown to the point now
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 where they meet each other for coffee and for lunch.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:40 Our brother exercised a reconciling influence for good in his workplace.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 And he wasn't trying to blow his own trumpet.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:45 But for him,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 that was a moment of deep satisfaction
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 in an otherwise difficult job.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 And I think it's all there
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 in that story in his workplace,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 in his experience.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 Work is toilsome.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:03 It is burdensome.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:05 It gets distorted.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 He works hard against trying to make it into an idol.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:14 And yet there are moments of triumph
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 and joy
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 and satisfaction
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 which are the consequence
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 of the profound influence of Jesus Christ.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 The writer of Ecclesiastes was correct
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 when he said in chapter 5, verse 18,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 I realised that it is good and proper
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 for a man to eat and drink
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 and to find satisfaction
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 in his toilsome labour
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 under the sun
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 during the few days of life
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 that God's given him
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 because that's his lot.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 And moreover,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 when God gives any man wealth and possessions
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 and enables him to enjoy them,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 to accept his lot
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 and be happy in his work,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 this is a gift of God.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:04 He seldom reflects on the days of his life
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 because God keeps him occupied
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 with gladness of heart.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 Now the last few weeks
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 while we've been preaching this series,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 we've seen a number of things
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 about work.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:18 We have seen that work has dignity
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 because it is part of God's creative purposes for us.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 We've seen that work is different from employment.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 It may include employment
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 but it certainly includes the work of life
00:05:32 --> 00:05:35 such as raising families,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 nurturing grandchildren,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 serving our community.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 It's vocational
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 and when we use the word vocational,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 we've been saying
00:05:44 --> 00:05:47 we are called to work by someone
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 or for someone.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 So work is not about us
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 and a means to our own ends.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 For a believer,
00:05:58 --> 00:06:00 work is service of God
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 and also service of the person
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 who calls us to work for them.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 We've also seen that work has become toilsome
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 as a direct result of God's judgment
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 in Genesis 3.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:19 We've seen that it is easily distorted
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 when we make an idol of it.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 The things that we idolise
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 can be good of themselves.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 We're not saying that wealth is wrong
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 or children are wrong
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 or esteem is wrong
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 or opportunity is wrong.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 But we're saying that these things become idols
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 when we allow them
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 to displace Jesus Christ as Lord in our life
00:06:39 --> 00:06:43 when they become the ultimate purpose of our work.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 And so work in a fallen world
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 can look pretty hopeless
00:06:50 --> 00:06:53 and what I want to do today
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 is preach about finding contentment in our work.
00:06:56 --> 00:07:01 How can we experience work as God's good gift?
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 How do we cope with the difficulty
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 and the toilsome nature of work?
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 How do we work without distorting it
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 into an idol that we give our life to?
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 Tim Keller's book,
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 which is Every Good Endeavour.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 We've got a couple more copies there in the foyer.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 They've been disappearing off the resource stand.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 There's two there if you want to get one.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 I want to follow his book this morning
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 in two directions in particular.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 I want to look at the world
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 with a gospel set of glasses.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 And secondly,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 I want us to see the world
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 as a place where God continually
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 impacts the lives of everyone
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 whether they are a believer or an unbeliever.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 Whether we recognise it or not,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 everybody has a world view,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:52 a lens through which we look at the world
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 and make sense of what is happening around us.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:59 And most of us are full of logical inconsistencies.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 So the scientific naturalist
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 who views the world as a mechanism
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 and sees people as animals,
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 they will argue for
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 and they will marvel at concepts
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 like the survival of the fittest
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 and natural selection
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 where the strong do away with the weak.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:21 and then they will be aggrieved
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 when somebody murders the professor
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 in their faculty
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 or their wife or their child.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 They will be outraged
00:08:28 --> 00:08:31 that someone of high value to them
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 is done away with
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 by someone of lower value
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 in terms of their own ethical framework.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:39 their value system
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 is in conflict
00:08:40 --> 00:08:44 with their mechanistic understanding of life.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 And their value system
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 just does not add up.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 You see,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 if there's no moral
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 ultimate accountability
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 then why wouldn't I sleep with your wife,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 murder you,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 take your estate,
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 I'd just be,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 I'd need to be stronger of course,
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 but I'd just be asserting myself
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 as stronger
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 and fitter than you
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 and there would be no moral consequences
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 to my action.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 But the Bible
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 has an entirely different lens
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 through which we view life.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 So when King David
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 slept with Uriah's wife,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 murdered Uriah,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 then took Bathsheba
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 to be his own wife,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 he soon discovered
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 that the God of his forefathers
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 was displeased
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 with what he had done
00:09:31 --> 00:09:34 and God brought justice
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 and accountability
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 to bear on David.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 So I want to say
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 that the Bible presents
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 a very coherent world view.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 It's built around the reality
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 that there is a creator
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 God of the universe.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 Jesus is Lord of the universe.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 Colossians chapter 1 says
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 that all things were created
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 by him and for him.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 So even today,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 this morning in Sydney,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 Jesus continues his work
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 intervening in his creation
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 as he sees fit.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 And that truth
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 echoes to the very core
00:10:13 --> 00:10:13 of our being
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 whether we believe
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 in God or not.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 Psalm 19,
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 where Sam was
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 a little while ago
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 with the kids,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 declared,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 Psalm 19 says,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 the heavens declare
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 the glory of God,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 the skies proclaim
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 the work of his hands.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:29 This stupendously intricate
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 and marvellous universe
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 points to something
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 even more glorious
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 beyond it,
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 its creator
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 who spoke it
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 into being
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 in the first place.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 Romans holds
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 everyone culpable
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 for what we do know
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 about God.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 Not what we don't know
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 about God,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 but what we do know
00:10:48 --> 00:10:48 about God.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 So verse 18 says,
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 the wrath of God
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 is being revealed
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 from heaven
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 against all the godlessness
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 and wickedness
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 of men
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 who suppress the truth
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 by their wickedness.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 Since what may be known
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 about God
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 is plain to them
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 because God has made it
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 plain to them.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 For since the creation
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 of the world,
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 God's invisible qualities,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 his eternal power,
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 his divine nature,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 have been clearly seen,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 being understood
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 from what has been made
00:11:18 --> 00:11:18 so that people
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 are without excuse.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 You get a great example
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 of this when you look
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 at Isaiah 10.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 The Assyrian emperor
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 thinks that he is
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 king of the world
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 and from the world's
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 point of view he is.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 He is the unchallenged
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 superpower of the world
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 2 years ago.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 He doesn't believe in God.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 He helps himself
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 to one country
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 after another.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 He conquers all before him.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 And he's a haughty
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 boaster about his work.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 So verses 13, 14.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 By the strength
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 of my hand
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 I've done this.
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 By my wisdom
00:11:58 --> 00:12:01 because I have understanding
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 I removed the boundaries
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 of nations.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 I plundered their treasures.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 Like a mighty one
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 I subdued their kings.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 As one reaches
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 into a nest
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 so my hand reached
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 for the wealth

00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 Isn't he the greatest?
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 He thinks so.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 So for the king
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 it's all about him
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 his desires
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 his achievements
00:12:31 --> 00:12:34 he does a big work
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 as a king
00:12:34 --> 00:12:37 and his world view
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 does not include
00:12:38 --> 00:12:38 God at all
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 he doesn't believe
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 in him.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:43 And the problem
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 for him
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 and for you
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 and for me
00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 is a very
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 inconvenient truth
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 that just because
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 you don't believe
00:12:53 --> 00:12:53 in God
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 doesn't mean
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 he tucks his tail
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 between his legs
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 and goes away
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 rejected and shamefaced.
00:12:59 --> 00:13:04 And in Isaiah 10
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 God answers
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 the king of Assyria's
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 boast
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 and he says
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 woe to him
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 I send him
00:13:13 --> 00:13:16 I dispatch him
00:13:16 --> 00:13:19 I have purposes
00:13:19 --> 00:13:19 for him
00:13:19 --> 00:13:24 Verse 15
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 does the axe
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 raise itself
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 above him
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 who swings it
00:13:28 --> 00:13:31 He might be
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 the greatest king
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 with the most
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 modern army
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 but he does not
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 operate outside
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 of God's purposes
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 for his creation
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 the king of Assyria
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 is a tool
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 in God's hands
00:13:44 --> 00:13:46 and he had better
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 recognise it.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:50 And so a Bible
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 worldview
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 is that it doesn't
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 matter how big
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 or important
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 you are in your
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 life's work
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 or your field
00:13:56 --> 00:13:56 of endeavour
00:13:56 --> 00:13:59 we are accountable
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 to God
00:13:59 --> 00:14:02 and our work
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 our achievements
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 only occur
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 with God's
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 permission
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 and for his
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 pleasure.
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 A gospel
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 worldview
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 also recognises
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 the lordship
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 of Jesus Christ
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 The apostle
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 puts it very
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 succinctly
00:14:18 --> 00:14:18 in 1 Corinthians
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 15
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 By this gospel
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 you are saved
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 if you hold
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 firmly to the
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 word I preach
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 to you
00:14:23 --> 00:14:25 otherwise
