00:00:07 --> 00:00:18 Modernism took hold during the 18th century and it trusted human intellect rather than God to solve the world's issues for us and to discover truth.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:28 There was, however, a general agreement in modernism that there was a right and a wrong and it was universally true and it was absolute
00:00:28 --> 00:00:31 and that objective truth could be known.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:40 But at the time of my, when I was born around 1969, I was born in 1969, but around that kind of time in the 1960s,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 the tide was starting to change and quite dramatically.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:54 The worldview known as postmodernism began to emerge and postmodernism believes that there is no objective and absolute truth
00:00:54 --> 00:01:00 that is to be understood and accepted, which ironically is in fact an absolute truth claim.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:01 But that's another point.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:10 Each individual is entitled to create and act on their own truth as they perceive it.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:15 And this entitles them to live and to do whatever is right in their own eyes.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:23 The final court of appeal on all religious and moral decisions is personal desire and opinion.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:32 This view was captured brilliantly by the American moral and social philosopher Abraham Edel when he wrote in his book Ethical Judgment,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 It all depends on where you are.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 It all depends on who you are.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:40 It all depends on what you feel.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:42 It depends on how you feel.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:45 It all depends on how you're raised.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:47 It all depends on what is praised.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 What's right today is wrong tomorrow.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 Joy in France, but England sorrow.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 It all depends on your point of view.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:59 Australia or Timbuktu in Rome do as the Romans do.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:04 If tastes just happen to agree, then you have morality.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 But where there are conflicting trends, it all depends.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:11 It all depends.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:21 Very few, if any, have consciously adopted a postmodern view of thinking and living.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 Most have taken it on without thought or without critique
00:02:24 --> 00:02:29 because it's just part of the cultural soup that we've kind of been marinating in for so long.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:33 The rejection of absolute truth sounds great.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:35 It sounds liberating.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 It sounds like it brings freedom.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 But like any truth claims, there are consequences.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 And so for the postmodernists, life has no meaning.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 It is simply a game.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 You are the only one who cares about you.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 There is no story which is universally true.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 Every claim to truth is simply a grasp of power.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 And so therefore we must trust every claim to truth.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 It also believes that there's no order.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:07 Everything is random.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:09 You have only one life.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 There's nothing beyond this.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:11 There's no truth.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 There's nothing else out there.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 And so live this life with a whole heap of gusto.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:23 There's also an ability to say one thing but do something completely different
00:03:23 --> 00:03:28 and not be concerned in any sense that there's an inconsistency with that
00:03:28 --> 00:03:32 or to even feel any shame associated with that inconsistency.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:41 And in the worst case scenarios, there is a complete disregard and rejection of all external authority
00:03:41 --> 00:03:46 which ultimately, left unchecked, leads to anarchy and chaos.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 But ultimately our justice system will ultimately hold you accountable
00:03:50 --> 00:03:56 and so postmodernism prepares us for the jails is what it ultimately does.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:03 It's one of the great tragedies of our age that there is a flippant attitude towards truth.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:11 Our culture is drifting in a vast ocean with no solid anchor points
00:04:11 --> 00:04:17 flipping here and there depending on where the tide's taking us at that particular point.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:25 And this is where our core value of Christ-centered Bible saturation is so essential.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:26 It's what our world needs.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 It's what we need.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:38 This value, like all of our values, we aspire to hold deep in our minds and our hearts
00:04:38 --> 00:04:45 and for it to drive and to change our passions and our behavior.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:52 And so this value, Christ-centered Bible saturation, is so profoundly more important than
00:04:52 --> 00:04:56 a verse a day keeps the devil away, can't put an attitude to the Bible.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:03 And one of the aims of what I'm hoping to do here today is to awaken in us
00:05:03 --> 00:05:08 a passion for the sheer existence of truth
00:05:08 --> 00:05:14 and for it to shape our behavior as we look at this core value
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 and what the scriptures and where we get it from in the scriptures.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 So here we go.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 The Bible makes the claim
00:05:21 --> 00:05:25 that truth is what God speaks
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 and it is absolute truth
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 for every culture,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:32 every generation,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 every individual.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 And the reason why God's word
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 is absolute truth
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 is because God is absolute reality,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 ultimate reality.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:47 Genesis 1 makes a very significant point
00:05:47 --> 00:05:50 that there was no reality before God.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:50 It says,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 In the beginning,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:56 God created the heavens and the earth
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 and the earth was formless and empty.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 Before creation,
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 God was.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 He stands outside of all things created.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 He wasn't part of what was created.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 God is from everlasting to everlasting.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 He had no beginning and no end.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 And the one who had no beginning,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 but always was and is and will be,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 he's the one who defines all things.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 He is.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:27 You remember,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 for those of you who remember this,
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 Exodus 3,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:31 Moses,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 the burning bush,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 and God tells Moses to get on back to Egypt
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 and tell Pharaoh,
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 the most powerful man in the world,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 you better pull your socks up, dude,
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 because God's going to come and smash you.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 Got the idea?
00:06:41 --> 00:06:41 That's my,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 that's a whole lot of chapters shrunk in a little bit.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 And Moses is freaked out by this
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 because, you know,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 what am I going to do?
00:06:49 --> 00:06:49 And he says,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:49 well,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 what if they tell,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 what if they ask me,
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 who sent me?
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 Who should I tell them?
00:06:54 --> 00:06:54 Bob,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 Bill,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 I mean,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 you know,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:56 give us your name.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 And God says,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 I am who I am.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 I just am.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:05 That's it.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 That's the best way you can define God.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 He just simply is.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:13 Now,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:16 if I tried that and said to Isabel,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 go and tell those people,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 and they say,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:18 well,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 who sent you?
00:07:19 --> 00:07:19 And say,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 well,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 I am sent me.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:23 I mean,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 that's just pretty much arrogance on my behalf.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 But when you are ultimate reality,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 when you're the ultimate being,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 you just say,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:31 I am,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 I define all things.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 My friends,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 let it hit you,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 the absoluteness of God's existence.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 Never beginning,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 never ending,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 never becoming,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 never improving.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:52 Simply and absolutely there to be dealt with on his terms.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 Or not at all.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 Whether we want him to be there or not,
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 he is there.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 We do not negotiate for what we want reality to be.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:10 No ranting and raving or sophisticated doubt or skepticism has any effect on the existence of God.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 He simply and absolutely is.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 And if we don't like it,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 we can change for our joy.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 Or we can resist for our destruction.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 But one thing remains absolutely unchanged.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 God is.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:32 He's the main thing in life because he's the main thing in the universe.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 And he's the main thing in the universe because he's created all that is.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 Romans 11,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:38 36.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:39 From him
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 and through him
00:08:41 --> 00:08:41 and through him
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 and to him
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 are all things.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 To him be glory forever.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 Whichever way you want to come at it,
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 he is.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 And it's all about his glory.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 And so,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 what that means is,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 his reality is created by him,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 determined by him,
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 defined by him.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 And when God speaks,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 he reveals reality.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:10 He reveals the way things actually are.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:15 Have a look at Psalm 119.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 It was just read out to us.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 Psalm 119,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 verse 160.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:23 It says,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 All your words are true.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 All your righteous laws are eternal.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 Now,
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 the word translated all there,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 in the NIV,
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 literally means head.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 It can mean the head of a body
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 or the head of a river
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 or the head of a tribe.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:39 And the same word there
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 is used in Exodus,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 chapter 30,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 verse 12.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 When you take a census
00:09:45 --> 00:09:45 of the Israelites
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 to count them,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 it's also used
00:09:48 --> 00:09:48 in Numbers,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 chapter 1,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 verse 2,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:51 which says,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 Take a census
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 of the whole Israelite community
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 by their clans and families.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 In both cases,
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 what Psalm 119 translates all,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 they translate as census.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 And what I think,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 verse 160 is saying,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 is that if you took a census,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 a survey,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 of the word of God,
00:10:13 --> 00:10:13 then the conclusion
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 of that census and survey
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 would be that the sum total of it
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 is truth.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 It is the word of God.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 It is true.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 The totality of the Bible is truth.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 But notice the second half
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 of verse 160.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:33 All your righteous laws are eternal.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 And so it's not just the sum total
00:10:35 --> 00:10:37 is truth.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 It's all the individual parts
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 which are truth.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 And so the census would reveal
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 that the whole and the parts
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 are all true.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 They are true
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 because when God,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 who is ultimate reality,
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 speaks,
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 he reveals the way things
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 actually are.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 He reveals reality.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:03 2 Corinthians 3,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:04 verse 16,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 says that all scripture
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 is God breathed.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 The whole Bible
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 is,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 comes out
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 from the mouth of God,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 from the ultimate reality.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 And when he speaks,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 he speaks what is true.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:26 So the Bible
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 is where God speaks
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 what is real
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 and absolute.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 Now we haven't quite
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 got there yet.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 We've still got a little bit
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 of work to do here.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:40 And so far,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 we've understood
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 that God is ultimate reality.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 And when God speaks,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 he speaks ultimate reality.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 He speaks truth.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 And truth
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 is when ultimate reality
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 and the revelation
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 of ultimate reality
00:11:54 --> 00:11:54 or the communication
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 of ultimate reality
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 align with each other.
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 That's what truth is.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 The opposite of truth
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 is lies.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 And lies
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 are when reality
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 and what I communicate
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 about reality
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 don't align
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 with one another.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 I'm feeling really rotten
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 and someone says to me,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 how are you feeling?
00:12:15 --> 00:12:15 I'm okay.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 Liar.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 Reality
00:12:20 --> 00:12:22 and communication
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 don't align
00:12:23 --> 00:12:23 with one another.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 The place where reality
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 and the communication
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 and that reality
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 come together
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 in the most profound senses
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 is in the person
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 of Jesus Christ.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:33 Firstly,
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 it's because Jesus
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 speaks truth.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 Jesus says this.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 John chapter 18.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:38 Go to John
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 because we're going to be
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 lingering there
00:12:40 --> 00:12:40 for a little bit.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 So John chapter 18.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:42 We're going to go to the back
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 and then move our way forward.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 So have that in mind.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 John chapter 18
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 verse 37.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 Jesus says,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 For this I came
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 into the world
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 to testify to the truth.
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 Everyone
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 on the side of truth
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 listens to me.
00:12:59 --> 00:13:01 And Jesus is saying there
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 that he speaks truth
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 and if you want truth,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 you listen to what Jesus says.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 But he says something
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 even more profound
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 than that
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 a couple of chapters earlier
00:13:13 --> 00:13:15 in John 14.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 He says this
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 in verse 6.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:20 I am the way,
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 the truth,
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 and the life.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 And no one comes to the Father
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 except through me.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:30 He doesn't just speak the truth.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 He says,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 I am the truth.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 I am where
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 ultimate reality
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 and the communication
00:13:41 --> 00:13:41 of ultimate reality
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 come together
00:13:42 --> 00:13:45 in perfect alignment.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 And he could only say that
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 if he was,
00:13:49 --> 00:13:49 in fact,
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 God himself.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 Which is, of course,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 what John chapter 1 says.
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 Flick over to John chapter 1.
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 Remember what we've seen?
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 Ultimate reality.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 God existed before
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 ultimate reality.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:04 Sorry,
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 his ultimate reality
00:14:05 --> 00:14:05 because he existed
00:14:05 --> 00:14:07 before all things were created.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 He defines everything.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 Beginning of the Bible.
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 Before anything was made,
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 God was.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 John chapter 1,
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 verse 1.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 In the beginning
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 was the Word.
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 Now the Word
00:14:20 --> 00:14:22 existed before anything was made.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:24 And the Word was with God
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 and the Word
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 was God.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 He was with God
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 in the beginning.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:28 Verse 3.
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 Through him,
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 that is,
00:14:30 --> 00:14:30 through the Word,
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 all things were made.
00:14:32 --> 00:14:32 Without him,
00:14:33 --> 00:14:33 nothing has been made
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 that has been made.
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 And so the Word
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 existed before
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 anything was created.

00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 made everything
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 and the Word
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 is God.
00:14:44 --> 00:14:44 That is,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 the Word
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 is ultimate reality.
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 The Word
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 is absolute truth.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:49 Then down
00:14:49 --> 00:14:51 into verse 14,
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 we see something
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 startling.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 this Word
00:14:54 --> 00:14:56 became flesh
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 and made
00:14:57 --> 00:14:57 his dwelling
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 amongst us.
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 And we have
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 seen his glory,
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 the glory of the one
00:15:01 --> 00:15:01 and only
00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 who came from the Father
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 full of grace
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 and truth.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 And so the question is,
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 who then
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 is the Word
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 who is God,
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 who existed
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 before creation,
00:15:14 --> 00:15:16 who created everything

00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 and all-important
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 reality,
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 reveals himself
00:17:30 --> 00:17:30 to us
00:17:30 --> 00:17:32 with authority
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 and with clarity
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 today.
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 And if God
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 is more important
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 than anything,
00:17:38 --> 00:17:38 then the Bible
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 is more important
00:17:39 --> 00:17:39 than anything

00:17:50 --> 00:17:50 keeps the devil
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 away.

00:17:54 --> 00:17:55 with the Word
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 of God.
00:17:57 --> 00:17:57 Truth,

00:18:00 --> 00:18:02 of reality,
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 because everything
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 that we face
00:18:05 --> 00:18:05 is touched
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 by the Bible.

00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 touched directly
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 because it's
00:18:09 --> 00:18:09 in the Bible

00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 indirectly touched

00:18:12 --> 00:18:12 Bible shapes
00:18:12 --> 00:18:14 the attitudes
00:18:14 --> 00:18:16 and criteria
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 in which we
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 deal with it.

00:18:21 --> 00:18:21 I have no doubt
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 that there are
00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 plenty of things
00:18:23 --> 00:18:23 that we need
00:18:23 --> 00:18:24 to know about
00:18:24 --> 00:18:24 in this world,
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 but the Bible
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 will be the sun
00:18:26 --> 00:18:28 in the solar
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 system of all
00:18:29 --> 00:18:29 that we learn.
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 It gives light,
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 it gives perspective,
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 it gives meaning.
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 Its truth
00:18:34 --> 00:18:36 needs to permeate
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 everything.
00:18:37 --> 00:18:38 It is not one
00:18:38 --> 00:18:40 amongst many books,
00:18:40 --> 00:18:40 it will be the
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 central book,
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 the all-permeating
00:18:42 --> 00:18:43 book.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 The other truths
00:18:45 --> 00:18:46 are dark planets,
00:18:46 --> 00:18:48 the Bible is the
00:18:48 --> 00:18:48 light-giving sun.
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 All other truth
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 claims will be read
00:18:51 --> 00:18:52 in the light of this
00:18:52 --> 00:18:52 book,
00:18:52 --> 00:18:53 all other things
00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 will be judged
00:18:54 --> 00:18:55 by this book.
00:18:56 --> 00:18:56 All things will
00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 find their meaning

00:20:08 --> 00:20:08 And let me tell you,
00:20:08 --> 00:20:09 there's a temptation
00:20:09 --> 00:20:10 here for us
00:20:10 --> 00:20:10 to rely upon
00:20:10 --> 00:20:12 intellectual arguments
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 that prove
00:20:13 --> 00:20:13 that God,
00:20:14 --> 00:20:14 that Jesus
00:20:14 --> 00:20:15 is God.
00:20:15 --> 00:20:18 and there are
00:20:18 --> 00:20:19 so many
00:20:19 --> 00:20:21 great arguments,
00:20:21 --> 00:20:21 so many
00:20:21 --> 00:20:23 external reasons
00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 as to why
00:20:24 --> 00:20:25 we would credit
00:20:25 --> 00:20:26 Jesus
00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 to be
