00:00:21 --> 00:00:23 I want you to know that it's okay for me to be out the front.

00:00:30 --> 00:00:34 We read the passage in our community group the other night.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 We had a great discussion and towards the end,
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 somebody tentatively but also boldly said,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 when you hear this read, it's really hard
00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 for the hairs on the back of your neck not to stand on their end.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 And they were reflecting, I think some of the words used were
00:00:57 --> 00:00:59 that when we come to a passage like this,
00:00:59 --> 00:01:03 it sounds old-fashioned, it sounds fuddy-duddy,
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 it sounds out of touch.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:08 And in some ways, and even in worse ways,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:12 for women, sounds like a considerable put-down.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:15 And we could go off and have a...
00:01:15 --> 00:01:17 You could talk heaps about all that
00:01:17 --> 00:01:18 without even looking at the passage.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 We've already found our positions,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:22 we know where we stand,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 and we're ready to interact with one another in our groups, aren't we?
00:01:25 --> 00:01:26 And we haven't even read the Bible any further.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 But what if he's dealing...
00:01:34 --> 00:01:36 I think he's dealing with problems in both places,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 but what we see in the first half,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:39 he says, verse 2,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 I praise you for remembering me in everything
00:01:42 --> 00:01:44 and for holding to the teachings
00:01:44 --> 00:01:46 just as I pass them on to you.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 He's been involved in tradition,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 the transmission of something which wasn't his,
00:01:50 --> 00:01:51 it was given to him,
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 and he's tried to faithfully pass it on to them.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 And however they've handled it,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 he's saying, I really want to praise you for this.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 So the first half of chapter 11 is reasonably positive,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 and the second part is incredibly negative.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 Verse 17,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:07 In the following directives,
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 I have no praise for you,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 for your meetings do more harm than good.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 So if we look at the first half,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:15 we're seeing they're praiseful,
00:02:16 --> 00:02:17 and we move into the second half,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:18 which we'll do in a minute,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 I have no praise for you.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 He's hot with anger
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 for the way that the Christians in Corinth
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 are behaving with regard to particular issues.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:29 So come back to women.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 We're not going to cover everything.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 We got a reaction in our community group the other night
00:02:35 --> 00:02:36 that sort of said,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:38 this just seems so out of touch.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:41 And yet what if,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 what if we looked around our group
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 and we said, all of us have daughters.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 What would it take for our daughter
00:02:49 --> 00:02:54 to present shamefully out there in the community?
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 If we were at a community gathering the football
00:02:57 --> 00:02:58 down in Westfield,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 if they took their tops off and walked around,
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 would that be perceived as a shameful thing?
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 And most of us would say,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 yeah, the whole of society would see that as shameful.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 And we added to it and said,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 yeah, well, even if they dressed really skimpily.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 And then we started to talk about,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 well, what about out the front of church?
00:03:16 --> 00:03:18 And we've got a woman speaking to us
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 and her skirt's up, you know,
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 halfway up her thighs
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 and her cleavage is well down the middle
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 and the guys are paying a tremendous amount of attention
00:03:25 --> 00:03:27 to everything that she's saying.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:32 There's something culturally inappropriate
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 that gets in the way of the message.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 And I think there are some dynamics at play here
00:03:37 --> 00:03:38 that bear on that.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 And I'm saying it now
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 because this is going to feed perhaps
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 into some of the things
00:03:42 --> 00:03:45 that Sam might want to talk about tomorrow afternoon.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:49 What I want you to see in terms of the text,
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 verse 4,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 every man who prays or prophesies
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 with his head covered dishonours his head.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 So there's a presumption there
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 that a man amongst in the church of God
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 may be praying and prophesying,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 which is the forth telling of the word of God,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 bringing the word of God to bear.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 And he will present in a particular way
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 and possibly reflects the Old Testament glory
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 where Moses didn't have his head covered
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 in the presence of God.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 But it may be wider than that
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 in terms of Corinthian culture.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 And then verse 5, look really carefully.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 Every woman who prays or prophesies
00:04:37 --> 00:04:41 with her head uncovered dishonours her head.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 Now what have they both got in common?
00:04:45 --> 00:04:46 In both contexts,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 a man or a woman
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 is praying
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 or is prophesying
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 in public.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 They're doing the same thing
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 but they're presenting differently
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 in the cultural context.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:03 And what if,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:05 and I think I've read this
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 but I won't go to the cross on it
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 because I might get contradicted,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 but what if in Corinth
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 to be a woman
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 out the front of the congregation
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 with your head shaven
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 said something about
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 your social standing,
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 maybe even your connection
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 with prostitution
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 or it said something
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 about you as a woman
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 in that setting,
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 might that not get in the way
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 of the prayer being prayed
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 or the word of God
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 being brought to bear
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 in terms of prophecy?
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 Now I don't think
00:05:42 --> 00:05:42 I want to go
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 a lot further
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 than that.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 There's obviously
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 bucket loads
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 that could be said
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 and here's your opportunity
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 to write your own questions
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 down right now
00:05:50 --> 00:05:50 on your sheet
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 and they can be brought
00:05:51 --> 00:05:51 back to panel

00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 from round about

00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 you come together
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 in verse 20,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 when you come together
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 it's not the Lord's supper
00:06:26 --> 00:06:26 you eat.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 For as you eat
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 each of you
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 goes ahead
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 without waiting
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 for anyone else.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 Would you mind
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 paying attention to me?
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 Like I can see
00:06:37 --> 00:06:37 everybody's eyes
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 gone over there
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 but I'd really like

00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 he literally says,

00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 the Lord's supper,

00:06:52 --> 00:06:55 You're doing
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 your own stuff.
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 And we know
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 from what Steve's
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 spoken about
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 in the last talk
00:07:02 --> 00:07:02 that he's been
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 talking to us
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 about being a body
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 and so when we talk
00:07:05 --> 00:07:05 about body
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 in Christian life
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 we're talking about
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 the corporate life
00:07:10 --> 00:07:10 of the people of God.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:11 We are a body.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:12 We're a body
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 gathered today
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 and boy
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 it's an exciting body
00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 to see gathered today
00:07:17 --> 00:07:17 and to be gathered
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 in this way
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 and that people
00:07:19 --> 00:07:19 have given time
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 this morning
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 to worship in this way.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 Just awesome.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 But he's saying
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 to the Corinthians
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 there's something
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 about this gathering
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 that's going on
00:07:30 --> 00:07:30 with you
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 which is just out of
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 what are you guys doing?

00:07:34 --> 00:07:34 lunch.

00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 of Christ himself
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 and he says
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 for I received
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 from the Lord
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 what I also passed

00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 what has happened
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 right throughout
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 our message series
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 in Corinthians

00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 taking us back
00:10:48 --> 00:10:48 to the way
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 of the cross
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 and he is reminding
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 the people of God
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 that we are
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 who we are
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 through the sacrificial
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 self-serving
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 act of our saviour

00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 tradition do we

00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 and have all
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 the church
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 arguments of
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 history that we
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 could conduct
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 or the method
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 or whether we
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 got an individual
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 cup or a wafer
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 or a piece of
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 bread
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 that's a load
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 of nonsense
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 it's a sideshow
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 but what is
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 the centre of
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 this show is
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 that there's a
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 body of believers
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 in Corinth
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 who are humiliating
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 one another
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 by the way
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 that they interact
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 with each other
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 they're calling
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 it the Lord's
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 supper
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 and they have
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 gone so far
00:11:35 --> 00:11:35 away from the
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 truth that it
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 is an offensive
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 thing that they
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 do in the light
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 of what God
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 has done for
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 them
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 and so you
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 come into the
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 last part of
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 the passage
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 where there's a
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 warning there
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 it says whoever
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 eats the bread
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 or drinks the
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 cup of the
00:11:50 --> 00:11:50 Lord in
00:11:50 --> 00:11:50 unworthy
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 manner
00:11:51 --> 00:11:51 we're not
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 talking about
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 little cups
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 of grape juice
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 and wafers
00:11:55 --> 00:11:55 we're talking
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 about the
00:11:56 --> 00:11:56 behaviour of
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 the body
00:11:57 --> 00:11:57 of Christ
00:11:57 --> 00:12:00 so whoever
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 behaves as
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 we gather
00:12:02 --> 00:12:02 in this
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 corporate meal
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 so whoever
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 eats the
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 bread or
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 drinks the
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 cup of
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 the Lord
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 in unworthy
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 manner will
00:12:09 --> 00:12:09 be guilty
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 of sinning
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 against the
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 body and
00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 blood of
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 the Lord
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 and a
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 man ought
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 to examine
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 himself
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 he ought
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 to examine
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 himself
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 so should
00:12:18 --> 00:12:18 the woman
00:12:18 --> 00:12:20 before he
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 eats of
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 the bread
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 and chokes
00:12:21 --> 00:12:21 on the
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 cup
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 or drinks
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 from the
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 cup
00:12:22 --> 00:12:26 because
00:12:26 --> 00:12:26 anybody
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 who
00:12:27 --> 00:12:27 eats
