BUILD UP One Another

00:00:05 --> 00:00:08 And one of the things that was not written into my contract,
00:00:09 --> 00:00:14 but strongly suggested, was to take part in a thing called park runs.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:16 Has anybody heard of park runs?
00:00:17 --> 00:00:18 Yes, some people.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:20 What park runs are they?
00:00:20 --> 00:00:23 They happen at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 And lately it's been quite cold at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 And it's a 5K run.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:33 And there's actually a number of people from church that do it.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 And you could do it too, if you like.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 And so I was heavily encouraged by the team to join.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 And look, it's nice to get out and run first thing in the morning.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:46 It's pretty cold and exhausting.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 But it's all about the last 200 meters.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 Not just because they are the last 200 meters,
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 but also what happens on this run is you kind of,
00:00:58 --> 00:01:02 you crest a hill and you come down these last 200 meters
00:01:02 --> 00:01:03 and there is the finish line.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:07 And there are all these people standing there shouting encouragement.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:08 You can do it.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:09 Come on.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:11 Don't stop now.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:12 Why are you lying down?
00:01:13 --> 00:01:15 Get over that line.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:17 It spurs you on.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 It helps you put on a boost of speed to get over the line.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 It is great to be encouraged.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:27 And it's great to encourage.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 It is great to build up.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 And it is great to be built up.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 Because our words are powerful.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:36 They can spur people on.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:37 They can encourage.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:39 They can build up.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:42 But our words can also tear down.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 Our words can cripple.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 You are a hopeless runner.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 Don't even bother finishing.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 We're going home.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:52 You can walk home.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:59 I wonder which of these two is the more natural way of speaking for you.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:04 Is it encouraging or is it tearing down?
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 Is it speaking in passive, aggressive ways that damage?
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 Pointing out people's faults and niggling at one another.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:17 When we come to the Christian faith, it is often described as a race.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:23 It's not quite the same as a 5K park run at 7am on a Saturday morning.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 But the whole life.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:30 The race following Jesus is not over in 30 minutes.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:35 It's 30 years, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 years.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 And in that time, we may fall down.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 We may stumble.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:47 And we are going to need to be picked up many times in our lives
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 if we are to make it to the end.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 That last day when we either meet Jesus when he returns
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 or we die and we meet Jesus.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 And the challenge for us today is to think about
00:03:01 --> 00:03:05 how we use our words as we run this race.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:09 It is easy to tear down, to cripple,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 and to cause people to stumble with our words,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 not even thinking about what we say.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 It is much more difficult,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:21 but so important to be shouting encouragement to one another
00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 as we head toward Jesus.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 And so let me pray as we have a look at God's word
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 as he speaks to us today.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:29 Let me pray.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 Dear Heavenly Father,
00:03:32 --> 00:03:37 we ask that you would help us to consider our words,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:41 help us as we consider how we encourage and build up one another.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 Lord, we know that you love us so much.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 Help us to love each other with our words as well.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 And we ask this in your Son's name and for your glory.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:52 Amen.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:59 And so we're going to be considering why we should encourage people,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:05 and then there'll be some helpful tips to encourage people.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:10 And so firstly, encouraging one another is what Christians are supposed to do.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:15 Hebrews chapter 10, which was read for us,
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 is this great passage of the Bible,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:22 which explains what the sacrifice of Jesus has done
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 and how it brings forgiveness.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:28 And so the author gets to the implication in verse 19.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 And it starts with therefore,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 because Jesus has sacrificed himself.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 His sacrifice is once for all.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 We don't need to continually make sacrifices.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 Therefore, we are to do these things.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:46 And the author of Hebrews has the phrase,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 let us,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 and he has the phrase since.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 So have a look from verse 22 with me.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 If you've got your Bibles open,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 if not, please open them.
00:04:57 --> 00:04:57 And if you need a Bible.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:01 So since we have confidence to enter the most holy place,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:01 two,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 let us draw near to God.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 and with the full assurance that faith brings,
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience
00:05:14 --> 00:05:17 and having our bodies washed with pure water.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:21 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess
00:05:21 --> 00:05:24 for he who promised is faithful.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:29 And let us consider how we may spur one another on
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 toward love and good deeds.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 Not giving up meeting together,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 as some are in the habit of doing,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 but encouraging one another.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:41 And all the more as you see the day approaching.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 There are three commands,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 three lettuces,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 if you like to eat lettuce.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 There's three let us.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:50 First of all,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 let us draw near to God.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 Let us hold to the hope we have in Christ
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 and let us encourage one another
00:05:58 --> 00:06:01 and spur on and build up.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 Now, I'm sure that if you've been in church
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 for any length of time,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 you've heard of those first two.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 Drawn near to God.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:15 Run away from your sin that so easily entangles.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 God has done so much for you.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 Don't chase after other things
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 and hold to the hope we have in Christ.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 Don't hope that other things will bring you joy.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 These are very common themes in the Bible.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 And they're things we talk about here
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 at St. Paul's regularly.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 But it's the third command that we're going to focus on.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 The author of the Hebrew adds
00:06:39 --> 00:06:43 that we should be encouraging one another,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 that we should be spurring one another
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 to love and good deeds.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 It's right up there in importance
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 with drawing near to God
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 and holding to the hope in Jesus
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 to encourage one another
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 and to draw near and hold hope.
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 And we see the same theme
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 running through 1 Thessalonians
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 that Adrian read from chapter 5.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 He died for us so that
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 whether we are awake or asleep,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 we may live together with Him.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 Therefore, encourage one another
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 and build each other up
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 just as in fact you are doing.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 Encourage.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 Build up one another.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 This is what a Christian does
00:07:25 --> 00:07:28 because Jesus has died for us.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 Just like obedience
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 and sharing the gospel
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 are the right response
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 to God's love and grace,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 so is encouraging one another.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 Now, you may not know this
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 about Steve Jeffery,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 but he is actually
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 a pretty good runner.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 You might not know.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 He's been away.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 He's probably been running a bit.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 I don't know if he's beaten his PB.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 Maybe we can ask him later.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 He has.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 Congratulations, brother.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 But not only is he a good runner,
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 he knows how to run.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 And so on my first park run,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 on my first time running the park run,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 Steve was running next to me.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 And it was encouraging
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 and also quite annoying
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 because I had to stay with him.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 He's like,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 come on, keep running.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 Don't stop.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:14 I was like,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 oh, I just want to lie down a bit.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:20 And I'm not sure if you run,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 but I always run faster
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 when I'm running with someone else.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 As we run the Christian race,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 as we are heading to Jesus,
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 how great is it
00:08:32 --> 00:08:35 that we can run alongside one another?
00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 It does not need to be a lonely run,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 but it's a partnership.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 And look, let me plug community groups again.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 These are a great place
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 to run the race together.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:52 having people in your corner,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 standing on the sidelines
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 or next to you as you run,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 encouraging you
00:08:58 --> 00:09:01 when following Jesus is hard.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 It's hard to be a Christian.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 You encourage them
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 when they stumble
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 and your brother or sister
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 fall into sin
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 and they do something stupid
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 and you pull them out.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 They can challenge you
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 when sin takes over.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 They love you in despair,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 laugh with you
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 when you are laughing
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 and cry with you
00:09:20 --> 00:09:20 when you are crying.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 Christians are saved
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 and united with one another
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 to encourage one another
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 and to build up each other
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 as we run this race.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 And so that is the first reason
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 why we run.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 We run because
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 that's the first reason
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 we encourage one another
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 and that is because
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 it's what Christians do.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 The second reason
00:09:44 --> 00:09:47 is because the end is near.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 So these two passages,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 Hebrews 10, 1 Thessalonians 5,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 they give us another reason
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 to encourage one another.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 Hebrews 10,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 let us spur on one another
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 to love and good deeds
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 and encourage one another
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 all the more
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 as you see the day approaching.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 That day is that day
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 when Jesus returns.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 1 Thessalonians 5,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 because the day of the Lord
00:10:11 --> 00:10:11 is coming,
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 we should therefore
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 encourage one another
00:10:14 --> 00:10:17 and build each other up.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 Both of these passages
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 tell us to encourage
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 and build up one another
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 because the end is near.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 It's just like those last
00:10:27 --> 00:10:30 200 metres of that park rung.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 We are close to the end
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 of this race.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 Now we don't know
00:10:35 --> 00:10:37 when the day of the Lord is.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 We don't know the day
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 that Jesus will return.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 And in the same way,
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 we don't know
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 when we will die.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 We don't know
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 when God will call us home.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 But what we do know
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 is that Jesus could return
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 at any moment.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 It could be
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 this minute.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 I feel like pausing
00:10:58 --> 00:10:58 for a whole minute
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 and saying that I won't.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 Now the end might not
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 feel like it's soon.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 It might feel like
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 it is a long way away.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 But because it is soon,
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 we need to be ready.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 We need to be waiting
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 for Jesus to come back.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 We need to be expecting
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 Him to come back.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 And we need to be
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 encouraging one another
00:11:17 --> 00:11:20 to keep trusting in Jesus.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 Keep drawing near to Him.
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 To keep holding on to God.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 We need to have
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 another person focused
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 that says,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 I'm going in this direction.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 Come with me
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 as I follow Jesus.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 And so we encourage
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 one another
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 because the end
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 is near.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 And third,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 we encourage
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 and build up
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 one another
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 because the race
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 is hard.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 Hebrews 3 says,
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 encourage one another
00:11:52 --> 00:11:52 daily
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 as long as it is
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 called today
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 so that none of you
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 may be hardened
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 by sin's deceitfulness.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 Encourage one another
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 because our sin
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 wants to deceive us.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 We live in a time
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 when we are distractible.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 I've read some studies
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 recently
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 and they suggest
00:12:12 --> 00:12:14 that our attention span
00:12:14 --> 00:12:17 because of technology
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 is now shorter
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 than a goldfish.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 I'm not sure
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 how you feel about that.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 I'm not sure
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 if you feel like
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 I'm going to go
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 and beat those goldfish.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 but our attention span
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 is now
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 less than nine seconds.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 It is easy
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 for us
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 to get distracted.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 We are just easy
00:12:37 --> 00:12:37 to get distracted
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 and it's easy
00:12:38 --> 00:12:38 for us
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 to get distracted
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 by sin.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:41 Running
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 in the wrong direction.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 Instead of following
00:12:45 --> 00:12:45 Jesus
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 we turn around
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 and want to chase
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 something else.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:49 We're to run
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 following Jesus
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 obeying him
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 because he died
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 for us
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 but we turn around
00:12:54 --> 00:12:54 and we chase
00:12:54 --> 00:12:56 our selfish desires
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 that war within us.
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 In that direction
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 I'm not pointing
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 at anybody in particular
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 in that direction
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 is all the money
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 and power
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 that I can have.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 If I have all the money
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 I want
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 I can have all the things
00:13:09 --> 00:13:09 I want
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 and if I have power
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 I can be in control
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 and I can chase
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 all the sex
00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 that I want.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 The race
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 following Jesus
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 is hard
00:13:19 --> 00:13:22 and so we need
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 people
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 to encourage
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 us to keep going.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 We do it
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 in general ways
00:13:29 --> 00:13:29 to everyone
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 from up front.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 I'm hopefully
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 encouraging you
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 right now
00:13:33 --> 00:13:33 to keep running
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 the race
00:13:34 --> 00:13:36 but we also
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 need the people
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 in our lives
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 to keep pointing
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 us to Christ
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 and to say
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 following Jesus
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 is worthwhile
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 even when
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 it is hard.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 But we also
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 need encouragement
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 in our lives
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 because we also
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 receive many
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 hard words.
00:13:56 --> 00:13:56 We live
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 in a broken
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 world where
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 everything calls
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 us to despair.
00:14:03 --> 00:14:03 Everything
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 points out
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 that this world
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 is broken.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 It calls us
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 to selfishness.
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 Sin
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 it steals
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 our joy
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 our bodies
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 are breaking
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 down
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 our plans
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 falter
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 our dreams
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 die
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 our
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 resolves
00:14:19 --> 00:14:19 weaken
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 our
00:14:20 --> 00:14:20 perspective
