Being a Multiethnic Church

00:00:15 --> 00:00:17 ethnocentricity, unity, diversity,
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 what does it all look like in terms of working out in a local church.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:26 Our vision, hopefully you have heard it many times in the past,
00:00:26 --> 00:00:29 hear it again, is to treasure Jesus together
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 that is make Jesus supreme together
00:00:33 --> 00:00:36 for God's glory and the joy of all people.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 Now, I'm convinced that we pursue that vision as a church
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 in a neighbourhood that we're in, a multi-ethnic neighbourhood,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 by building a multi-ethnic church of people
00:00:47 --> 00:00:51 whose hearts are transformed towards one another by Jesus Christ.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 Now, in this series, I've been making the point really clear
00:00:57 --> 00:00:58 again and again and again.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:01 This is not about fixing the politics of our world.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 It's not about a political statements of where we sit with racism.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 This is a series that's about hearts.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:08 It's about your heart.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:11 It's about my heart.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:13 That's what it's about.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:23 And together, I want to talk about those transformed hearts coming together
00:01:23 --> 00:01:28 as a local church in relational generosity.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:34 That's fundamentally the transformation of God's grace to us
00:01:34 --> 00:01:39 is that his radical generosity to us makes us radically generous people,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:43 not just with finances, but relationally generous.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:51 Being a multi-ethnic church is fundamentally about our relational commitment to each other
00:01:51 --> 00:01:56 and not, first and foremost, about structures and how we do things.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:01 It's not first and foremost about language and structures and leadership.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 It's about relational commitment.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:12 And I want to pick that issue up today from Luke 17 and a few other verses.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 So three points today.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:16 If you've got the St. Paul's app, it'd be great to open it up
00:02:16 --> 00:02:21 or just get a pen and pencil, you know, piece of paper, whatever.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 Three points.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:25 Being a multi-ethnic church requires us to be a community of forgiveness,
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 a community of reconciliation, and a community of love.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 That's the three points.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:34 And I want to focus on the first point the most.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 So when I get to the end of the first point, you go,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 my goodness, he just got through one.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 That will be the most point.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 Then I'm going to quickly move through the other two.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 Okay, a community, a forgiving community.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:50 First of all, we notice from Luke 17 that forgiveness is hard.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:57 Every single one of us had people out there who owe us.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:00 People who, in our mind, owe us.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 Might not have never met them personally, but we think that they owe us
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 because of how they've treated us,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:12 even if that treatment of us has not been a direct treatment of us.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 We just assume that they've treated us badly.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:17 And we tend to hold it over them in some way,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 even if it's a secrecy of our own hearts.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:27 We might be more demanding of them if we know them personally,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:31 or we might just keep bottled it up inside and don't speak of it.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 Generosity means that you release those things.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:37 We let it go.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:37 We forgive.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 Does that sound hard?
00:03:40 --> 00:03:45 Well, in Luke 17, it appears the disciples thought forgiveness was hard too.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 When Jesus starts talking about forgiveness,
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 the first response of the disciples is an emphatic,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 in the Greek language, increase our faith.
00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 Increase our faith.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 It's another way of saying,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 Jesus, how on earth is that even possible?
00:04:06 --> 00:04:09 How is it even possible for us to forgive like this?
00:04:09 --> 00:04:15 Verse 4 is the enormity of the challenge that Jesus puts before the disciples.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:20 He says that if your brother sins against you seven times in a day,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:25 and seven times he comes to you repentant, you must forgive.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:32 Now, the number 7 was symbolic for Jewish people.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:36 It's a number that means completeness, fullness, perfection,
00:04:36 --> 00:04:39 beyond which nothing more is possible.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:46 What Jesus is saying here is worse than you think.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:50 Someone put it like this.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:56 If a person would wrong you as completely and as fully
00:04:56 --> 00:05:02 as any person could ever possibly wrong another human being,
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 you must forgive them.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 Just let that sit with you for a moment.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:11 That's his command on his disciples.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 Imagine the worst thing that anybody could possibly do to you,
00:05:17 --> 00:05:21 something so bad that nothing beyond it is even possible.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 Jesus says to his disciples, you must forgive them.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 That's why the disciples say, increase our faith.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:37 He's saying, that's impossible, Jesus.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 That's impossible.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 It's an enormous challenge.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:47 But we cannot shrink back from it.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:50 There's a little phrase here that is easy to ignore.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:55 And it's actually connected to what follows,
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 not to what the two previous verses is.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 In verse 3, it's connected to what follows.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 We connected to normally what is previously,
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 but actually connected to what follows.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 Jesus starts this section with, watch yourself.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 Watch yourself.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 Then he talks about forgiveness.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:22 We are called to watch ourselves when others sin against us.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:31 When someone wrongs us, we normally pay a great deal attention to them.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:38 Think about how much they have wronged us and how much they have hurt us.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:44 Jesus says you are to pay attention to yourself, your own heart.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 This is so crucial for us.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:54 As a multi-ethnic church of diverse people,
00:06:55 --> 00:07:01 it is so easy to inadvertently say the wrong thing,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 to be culturally offensive and not even to be aware of it,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 to forget someone's name and for deep hurt to be settled in
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 because of someone, I've used the wrong name.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 It's so easy to hurt.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:20 It's so easy just to pack it all in the heart.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 And Jesus says, watch yourself.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 Watch yourself.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 Why?
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 I'll illustrate it, then I'll unpack it.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:36 The Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy was married to his wife Sonia for 48 years.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 On the eve of their wedding,
00:07:39 --> 00:07:43 he gave his 18-year-old fiancé his diaries to read.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:48 They included the details of his many sexual experiences,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:53 including with a servant who worked for him in that moment
00:07:53 --> 00:07:56 and who bore him a child.
00:07:56 --> 00:08:01 The child who his fiancé was not aware of was, in fact, Leo's child.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 When she was in her early 70s,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:10 she was writing, this is right at the end of her life,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:15 she was writing in her own journal very, very bitterly
00:08:15 --> 00:08:18 about what she had read over 50 years earlier.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:23 One historian wrote this about that journal entry.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:30 For half a century, jealousy and unforgiveness blinded her
00:08:30 --> 00:08:36 and in the process destroyed all love for her husband and other people.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:41 In other words,
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 she reads of his sin
00:08:44 --> 00:08:47 and she's destroyed by it.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 She's the one who's ruined.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 Hebrews 12, 15,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:59 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God
00:08:59 --> 00:09:06 and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 Watch yourself.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:14 Because anger, when someone wrongs us,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:18 will always tell us it's not actually anger.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 Anger will tell you that I'm not anger,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 I am justified,
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 I am truth,
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 I am righteous.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:32 But if we keep a hold of that anger,
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 it will defile us.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:38 Now there are four words in the English language
00:09:38 --> 00:09:43 that all come from the same core root word.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:44 They are
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 wrath,
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 which means rage,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 anger,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 fury.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:51 Reef,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 which means to twist together flowers,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 branches,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 vines.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 Writhe,
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 is to be bent out of shape and contorted.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 And wraith,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 which is a ghost-like figure,
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 image of someone
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 just before or after their death.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 They're all connected,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 the same root word.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 And when we stay angry with people
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 and we hold a grudge,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 we stay resentful,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 we become distorted,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 twisted by anger.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 They may well move on.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 We don't.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 We become a person who's afraid
00:10:31 --> 00:10:36 of trusting another human being.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 Can you see how that destroys relationships?
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 We become joyless.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 We become suspicious of people.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 We demonize others.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 We become a hard person.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 If someone wronged you,
00:10:55 --> 00:10:58 and if this is the case for you right now,
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 put your heart on high alert.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 The wrong that's being done to you
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 is probably the least of your problems.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:11 So,
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 forgiveness is hard.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 So what does the practice of forgiveness look like?
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 There are at least three things
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 that we must do
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 if we're to avoid becoming twisted
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 and destroyed by bitterness.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 The first thing
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 is that we must refuse
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 to caricature
00:11:28 --> 00:11:31 the other person,
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 the person who's wronged us.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:36 Jesus is making an important point here
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 when he says,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:41 if your brother sins.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 He's talking about,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 in this moment,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 Christians wronging Christians.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 And he's reminding us
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 that we all have a common family.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 When our temptation
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 is to highlight the differences,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 don't forget to emphasize
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 the unity
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 in whose you are.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:04 But in Mark 11, 25,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 Jesus says
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 that we are to forgive
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 anyone
00:12:07 --> 00:12:09 who wrongs us.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:09 Not just brothers,
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 anyone.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 And the principle is the same.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 We must stress
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 that we have
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 a common unity
00:12:18 --> 00:12:20 with whoever they are.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:22 We share a common humanity
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 in the image of God.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 Every human being
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 is a complex person
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 made in God's image
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 with great dignity
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 and worth.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 We also share
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 a common sinfulness
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 with all people.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 It is impossible
00:12:37 --> 00:12:40 to stay angry
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 with someone else
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 unless you feel
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 superior to them.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 Get that?
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 Let me just let that
00:12:51 --> 00:12:51 sink into you
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 a little bit more.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 It is impossible
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 to stay angry
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 with someone
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 unless you feel
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 superior to them.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 We must identify
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 with the enemy.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 We must bring
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 ourselves down
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 in humility
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 and them
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 up
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 in image
00:13:15 --> 00:13:15 of God.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:20 the second thing
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 we need to do
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 is to inwardly
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 surrender the right
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 to repayment
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 and to pay
00:13:26 --> 00:13:26 the debt ourselves.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 The word for forgive
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 that Jesus uses
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 in this passage
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 is a very specific word
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 that means
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 to release a person
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 from a financial debt
00:13:36 --> 00:13:38 and it means
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 to absorb
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 the debt yourself.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 How do we forgive?
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 We can only forgive
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 if we
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 inwardly
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 inwardly
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 we forgo
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 seeking repayment.
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 Normally
00:13:58 --> 00:13:58 if someone
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 makes us happy
00:13:59 --> 00:14:02 we in turn
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 seek to make
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 them unhappy.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 If someone
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 rejects us
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 we in turn
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 seek to reject
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 them.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 If someone
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 destroys
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 our reputation
00:14:12 --> 00:14:14 we destroy
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 their reputation.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 We might
00:14:19 --> 00:14:19 do it
00:14:19 --> 00:14:19 directly
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 and tell them
00:14:20 --> 00:14:20 off
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 and make
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 them feel
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 bad
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 or we might
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 do it
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 behind their
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 backs
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 and gossip
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 about them
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 and ruin
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 their reputation.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 The less
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 obvious way
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 though
00:14:29 --> 00:14:31 is to
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 inwardly
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 nurture
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 the hurt.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 Inwardly
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 nurture it.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 We keep
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 playing it
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 over and
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 over and
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 over again
00:14:42 --> 00:14:42 in our
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 minds
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 so that we
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 can stay
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 angry with
00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 them.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 And we
00:14:49 --> 00:14:49 take any
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 little bit
00:14:50 --> 00:14:50 of feed
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 that we
00:14:51 --> 00:14:51 can get
00:14:51 --> 00:14:53 to feed
00:14:53 --> 00:14:53 it into
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 that anger
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 so the
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 anger
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 just stays
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 really healthy.
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 Whichever
00:15:01 --> 00:15:01 way we
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 do it
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 we feel
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 like we
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 are getting
00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 repayment.
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 forgiveness
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 but
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 it is
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 instead
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 robbing
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 our life
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 of joy
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 and peace
00:15:13 --> 00:15:15 and contentment.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 We become
00:15:16 --> 00:15:16 harder
00:15:16 --> 00:15:18 and bitter
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 and twisted
00:15:19 --> 00:15:21 and closed
00:15:21 --> 00:15:21 off
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 from others.
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 Forgiveness
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 disciples were
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 right here
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 increase our
00:15:29 --> 00:15:29 faith.
00:15:31 --> 00:15:31 Forgiveness
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 might hurt
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 in the short
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 term because
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 we refuse
00:15:34 --> 00:15:34 to repay
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 and instead
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 absorb
00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 the debt
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 but it
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 leads to
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 joy and
00:15:39 --> 00:15:39 peace and
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 freedom
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 for eternity.
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 The third
00:15:43 --> 00:15:43 thing we
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 must do
00:15:44 --> 00:15:44 is in
00:15:44 --> 00:15:44 verse 3
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 if your
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 brother or
00:15:46 --> 00:15:46 sister sins
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 against you
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 rebuke
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 them.
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 That is
00:15:51 --> 00:15:51 what it's
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 saying here
00:15:52 --> 00:15:52 is it's
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 not loving
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 to let
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 someone go
00:15:55 --> 00:15:55 on doing
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 anything
00:15:56 --> 00:15:56 that they
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 want
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 but
00:15:59 --> 00:16:01 be really
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 careful with
00:16:02 --> 00:16:02 this verse.
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 really
00:16:04 --> 00:16:04 careful.
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 The purpose
00:16:06 --> 00:16:06 of the
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 rebuke
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 here is
00:16:08 --> 00:16:08 not to
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 put the
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 other person
00:16:10 --> 00:16:10 down.
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 The purpose
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 of the
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 rebuke
00:16:13 --> 00:16:13 is in
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 fact to
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 lift them
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 up.
00:16:16 --> 00:16:16 It's
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 not to
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 win an
