00:00:05 --> 00:00:12 and the walls came a-tumbling down. You may talk about your men of Gideon, you may talk about the
00:00:12 --> 00:00:18 men of Saul, but there's none like good old Joshua at the battle of Jericho. He was certainly there.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:23 It's a well-known African-American song. It's a great song and it's a fun children's song and
00:00:23 --> 00:00:29 you'll probably go out of here singing it tonight. So bad luck, there you go. But the problem is when
00:00:29 --> 00:00:35 you get to Joshua 6 and you read about the destruction of Jericho, you soon realise that
00:00:35 --> 00:00:43 Joshua 6 does not give Joshua the glory for this battle and for this victory. It lies very much
00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 in the Lord's hands and that's what we're going to see as we go through this message tonight.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:52 The scene is set at the end of Joshua 5, which we didn't read. We read a few weeks ago.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 There's a vision. So I hope you've got your Bibles open. If you're looking at the end of Joshua 5 and
00:00:57 --> 00:01:03 into Joshua 6, that's where I'm speaking from, the commander of the Lord's armies appears
00:01:03 --> 00:01:09 to Joshua and a sword is in his hand and he looks really intimidating. He's ready for a fight,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:19 but so is Joshua. And Joshua asks him a really bold question. Whose side are you on? Us or our enemies?
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 And God's answer to him is neither.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:33 Yahweh, the Lord God, has a message for you. Get your shoes off. You're standing in a holy place.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:39 It's a holy place because he's in the presence of God and Joshua is having something like the same
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 experience that the former leader Moses had had when he encountered God at the burning bush.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:49 Get your feet off. Get your sandals off. This is holy ground to be standing in my presence.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:57 And you see here that God is holy and he demands our respect whether you believe in him or not.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:01 He doesn't play favourites. Everybody's accountable to him.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 God's people are about to completely devastate St. Jericho.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 So the end of the story, you get, this is the end of the story. I'm going to give it to you right now.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:19 Verse 24. They burned the whole city and everything in it and they put the silver and the gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord's house.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:31 And what we read is a story where women and boys and girls and animals are completely obliterated by the people of God.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:40 So think for a moment and feel the severity of what is going on here.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 Australians go to war against nations who do such things.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:52 At the moment we have troops fighting in Iraq against ISIS.
00:02:52 --> 00:03:05 We participate in the United Nations humanitarian missions to protect vulnerable people groups who are attacked by other nations that have genocidal intentions.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 We fight about these things.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 And here we have it in the Old Testament part of the Bible.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:18 How do we reconcile God being behind a genocide?
00:03:18 --> 00:03:27 I had a conversation with somebody earlier in the day and they were talking to somebody after one of the services this morning.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:36 And the way they dealt with it is to say we don't want to know too much about the Old Testament because it's a different God in the Old Testament to the God that we encounter in the New Testament.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 And that is absolutely not true.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 Back in Genesis, God made promises to Abraham.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:51 In Genesis 15, as the sun was setting, Abraham fell into a deep sleep and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 And then the Lord said to him,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:58 Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:03 and they will be enslaved and they'll be mistreated for 400 years.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 and afterwards they will come out with great possessions.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:20 But in the fourth generation, your descendants will come back here.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 For the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 The sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:34 And so you start to see that this is not about genocide,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 and it's not about favouritism.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:42 This is about the judgment of God who doesn't play favourites.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:52 The time has come for the Amorite citizens of Jericho to be judged for their rejection of God.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:58 God has been patient and forbearing for hundreds of years,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:04 and time is now up and his judgment is about to fall on them.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 Now if you think that's unfair,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 then we could look further ahead in the Bible
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 and see that God would later do the same thing with his own people.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:18 He will send them into exile from the Promised Land
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 because God does not play favourites.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 So the commander of the Lord's army
00:05:26 --> 00:05:30 is both a comfort and a warning to Joshua.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:35 Comfort in that God is leading them to what will be
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 a heartening, breathtaking victory,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 but a warning in that God is king.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 He doesn't play favourites.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 If the people of God turn away from him,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 there will be no special pleading.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 We will all come under his judgment.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 So the commander brings this message of great reassurance.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 Verse 2, chapter 6.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 along with its king and its fighting men.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 The Lord will win the battle of Jericho.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 He is holy.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 He is the sovereign king.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:14 Joshua is about to participate in God's victory.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:19 And so the really important question is not what Joshua asked,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 which is, whose side are you on God?
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 He is Lord and God and king.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 He doesn't answer to us.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 We are accountable to him.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 And so the question is,
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 are we giving ourselves to his purposes?
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 Are we on his side?
00:06:35 --> 00:06:35 Are we on his side?
00:06:35 --> 00:06:41 Do we care and participate in his mission
00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 to bring men and women and boys and girls into his kingdom
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 to live for Christ as the redeemed people of God in the world,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 which is what he calls us to be?
00:06:50 --> 00:06:54 The last words of Jesus to his disciples at the end of Matthew,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:59 are going to all the world and make disciples of all nations,
00:06:59 --> 00:07:02 baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 and of the Holy Spirit.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:08 And lo, I am with you always until the very end of the age.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:13 We have been given a very clear mission from God.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:17 And wind the clock back 1 years to Joshua,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:21 he is being given a very clear mission by God
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 to enter and conquer the land,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 to lead the people of God into the place
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 where they can live and enjoy life as his people,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 to begin to enjoy his salvation.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 St. Paul's vision is to know,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:41 to treasure and to represent Jesus.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:45 And in a way, it's an expression of Matthew 28.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:49 It reminds us that we are saved for a purpose
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 and God graciously saves us
00:07:51 --> 00:07:55 and allows us to participate in his work in this world.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 So for the Israelites, Joshua 6,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 the current mission is Jericho.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 It's mission impossible.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 It's fortress Jericho.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 The city's closed up.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 The mighty walls seem impenetrable.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 And from a human point of view,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 this is just impossible.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 But the Lord speaks to Joshua
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 and reassures him saying,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 verse 2,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:22 I have delivered Jericho into your hands
00:08:22 --> 00:08:25 along with its king and its fighting men.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 And so God gives,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 right through the early chapters of Joshua,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:35 he's giving Joshua reassurance after reassurance
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 as they step into this fearsome land,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 into this land of the giants.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 And as they come into the land
00:08:41 --> 00:08:44 and as they begin to participate
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 in the first fight to take control,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:49 this first victory will be the Lord's.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 So the verse of our series,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 Joshua chapter 1, verse 9,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 God's been preparing him.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 Have I not commanded you?
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 Be strong and courageous.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 Do not be terrified.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 Do not be discouraged.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 For the Lord your God
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 will be with you wherever you go.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 And then in chapter 2,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 Rahab's revelation,
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 which was there to encourage the spies,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 I know that the Lord has given this land to you
00:09:16 --> 00:09:19 and that a great fear of you has fallen on us
00:09:19 --> 00:09:22 so that all who live in this country
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 are melting in fear because of you.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 When we heard of it,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 our hearts melted
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 and everyone's courage failed because of you.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 For the Lord your God
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 is God in heaven above
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 and on the earth below.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:39 So three words of encouragement,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 I have delivered Jericho into your hands,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 I am with you
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 and your enemies there melting in fear.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 And then God asked Joshua to do something
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 that seems completely ridiculous.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 Parade around the city.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 Ark of God out front,
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 priests blowing trumpets,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 do it every day for six days
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 with all the fighting men,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:06 maybe 600 men following behind,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 walk in absolute silence
00:10:08 --> 00:10:11 and then on the seventh day,
00:10:12 --> 00:10:12 wear yourselves out,
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 do it seven times
00:10:13 --> 00:10:16 and wait for my command
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 and when I say shout,
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 you shout!
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 It's a religious parade.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 It's like an Anzac Day march, you know.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 Thousands of soldiers
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 and no tools
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 to be able to breach the city's impregnable walls.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 I'm an engineer by background
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 and I went looking for
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 the biggest bulldozer in the world the other day
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 because I wanted a way
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 to knock down the walls of Jericho
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 because it could have brought my engineering to be.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 Komatsu 575,
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 they use them in northwest Australia.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 Really big
00:10:48 --> 00:10:51 and they can push 45 cubic metres
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 which is about 100 tonnes of earth
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 at one time.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 And one of those I reckon
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 would have gone through Jericho's walls
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 in about 30 minutes.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:05 But Joshua didn't have tools
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 or capacity like that.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 Some of the children's Bibles
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 and I'm not sure we didn't see it on the screen
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 a minute ago
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 showed that the people of Jericho
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 mocking them as they march.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 But the Bible doesn't say that.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 600 men
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 marching around the city
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 six days in a row
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 in absolute silence
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 I think would have brought
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 a sense of fear
00:11:31 --> 00:11:33 and foreboding
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 to the people
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 who were behind the walls.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:41 Rahab has already told the spies
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 that
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 the hearts
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 of the people
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 in the city
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 were melting
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 with fear.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:51 So the Ark of the Covenant
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 is out the front
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 of this parade
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 the symbol of God's presence
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 he had led them
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 right through the desert
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 and the priests
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 a week or two before
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 had stepped into the Jordan River
00:12:03 --> 00:12:03 in flood
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 put their feet
00:12:05 --> 00:12:05 into the water
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 with the river flooding
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 and God just stopped the river
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 and the whole nation
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 walked across
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 on dry land
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 into the promised land.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:17 And rather ominously
00:12:17 --> 00:12:20 the Ark of God
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 is front
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 centre
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 out the front again
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 at Jericho.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 So verse 20
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 when this trumpet
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 sounded
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 the people shouted
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 and at the sound
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 of the trumpet
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 and when the people
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 gave a loud shout
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 the wall collapsed
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 so that every man
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 charged straight in
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 and they took the city.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 God destroyed
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 an impenetrable
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 fortress.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 They didn't breach
00:12:51 --> 00:12:51 the wall
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 God did.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 It was his victory
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 he did everything
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 the people
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 had the joy
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 of participating
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 in the victory
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 that God
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 had won
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 and all glory
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 to him.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 Huge echoes
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 of this type
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 of thing
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 in the New Testament
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 I'm just going to one
