00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 who kills out of duty but for the greater good

00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 espionage, state secrets, political intrigue

00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 and it all happened 3400 years ago
00:01:48 --> 00:01:55 Israel stands on the verge of entering the land of giants
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 they're standing where they stood 40 years before
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 and God's promise remains
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 Joshua 1, God assures and reassures Joshua
00:02:05 --> 00:02:06 that he is with us

00:03:02 --> 00:03:07 Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim
00:03:07 --> 00:03:10 go look over the land he said
00:03:10 --> 00:03:11 especially Jericho
00:03:11 --> 00:03:16 so they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab
00:03:16 --> 00:03:18 and stayed there
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 now get the story
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 two spies sent into the land to suss it out
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 they're instructed to take particular attention to Jericho
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 the mission's secret
00:03:30 --> 00:03:32 it's dangerous
00:03:32 --> 00:03:33 they set out
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 and without any explanation
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 just happened to find themselves
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 staying in the house of a woman of renown
00:03:39 --> 00:03:42 Rahab sells herself for money
00:03:42 --> 00:03:47 and it begs a lot of questions doesn't it
00:03:47 --> 00:03:52 whose bright idea was it to go to her place
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 Joshua sent them to Jericho
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 and they found their way to the local brothel
00:03:58 --> 00:04:03 you can just imagine them telling this story
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 when they get back home in Israel
00:04:05 --> 00:04:06 well they're not there yet
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 but explaining themselves to their wives
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 when they get back to camp
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 let alone Joshua
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 probably say they'd seen James Bond
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 and that's how they thought spies did it
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 you're all very quiet
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 we saw this in our small group the other night
00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 we read this passage the other night
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 and people struggled with the morality
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 of what is going on here
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 and they wanted to justify the spies
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 and justify where they were
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 and then Rahab tells a lie
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 and they wanted to explain away Rahab's lie
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 we did as a group
00:04:37 --> 00:04:43 but for all the questions that we might ask
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 the Bible doesn't answer them
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 it just tells us what happens
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 the men have been noticed
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 so verse 2
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 the king of Jericho was told
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 look some of the Israelites
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 have come here tonight
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 to spy out the land
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 so the king of Jericho
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 sent this message to Rahab
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 bring out the men who came to you
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 and entered your house
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 because they have come
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 to spy out the whole land
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 the missions discovered
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 the king knows where they are
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 the secret police
00:05:14 --> 00:05:17 know whose house they went to
00:05:17 --> 00:05:20 he knows their operation
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 and he wants them caught
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 and the king's officers
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 turn up at Rahab's place
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 and say turn them in
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 hand them over
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 and she says sorry boys
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 they've gone
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 I didn't know where they came from
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 they ducked out the city gate
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 just before dusk
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 I don't know where they went
00:05:38 --> 00:05:38 if you go quickly
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 you might catch them
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 she is a spectacularly good liar
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 she tells it smoothly
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 and she gets a really great result
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 she saves them
00:05:48 --> 00:05:53 in verse 6 it says
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 she'd taken them up onto the roof
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 she'd hidden them under the stalks of flax
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 that she had laid out on the roof
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 and so the men set out
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 in pursuit of the spies
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 on the road that leads
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 to the fords of the Jordan
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 and as soon as the pursuers
00:06:05 --> 00:06:05 had got out
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 the gate was shut
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 so how good's that
00:06:09 --> 00:06:13 the prostitute lies
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 she saves them
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 she could have been
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 a hero in her own city
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 collected the reward
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 but she protected
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 these two invaders
00:06:26 --> 00:06:29 and it begs
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 a really big question
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 why on earth
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 would she do such a thing
00:06:34 --> 00:06:39 and you find that out
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 in verses 8 to 13
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 she went up on the roof
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 and she said to them
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 I know that the Lord
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 has given this land to you
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 and that a great fear of you
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 has fallen on us
00:06:52 --> 00:06:55 so that all who live in this country
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 are melting in fear
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 because of you
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 we have heard
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 how the Lord dried up
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 the water of the Red Sea
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 for you
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 when you came out of Egypt
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 and what you did
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 to Sion and Og
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 the two kings of the Amorites
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 east of the Jordan
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 whom you completely destroyed
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 when we heard of it
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 our hearts melted
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 and everyone's courage
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 failed because of you
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 for the Lord your God
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 is God in heaven above
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 and on the earth below
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 now then
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 please swear to me
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 by the Lord
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 that you will show kindness

00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 they would have been
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 in the land
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 40 years before
00:08:00 --> 00:08:04 Rahab knows
00:08:04 --> 00:08:04 a number of things
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 about the Lord
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 she knows that Israel
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 is not just helping
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 themselves to this land
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 the Lord is giving it
00:08:10 --> 00:08:10 to them
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 she knows how the Lord
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 has saved and protected
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 his people in the past
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 she's heard about them
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 coming out of Egypt
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 how the Lord opened
00:08:19 --> 00:08:19 the Red Sea
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 and drowned the Egyptian army
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 and she knows that
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 Sion and Og
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 the Amorite kings
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 were destroyed by Israel
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 she knows that
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 the Lord God
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 is with Israel
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 and she
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 and the whole of the
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 people of Jericho
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 are terrified
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 they're trembling
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 in their boots
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 they're sick
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 with fear
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 but Rahab
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 has gone a step further
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 she just doesn't
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 fear the circumstances
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 that she's in
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 she fears the Lord
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 for herself
00:08:52 --> 00:08:52 and she has come
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 to this extraordinary
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 conclusion in verse 12
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 the Lord your God
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 is God in heaven
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 above and on the earth
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 below
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 he's not just
00:09:03 --> 00:09:03 one of the gods
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 he is awesome
00:09:05 --> 00:09:05 in power
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 and he is God

00:09:18 --> 00:09:22 she won't understand
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 sacrifices and rules
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 but she
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 has come
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 to believe
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 in the Lord
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 Rahab has come
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 to a great truth
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 and knowledge
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 of that truth
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 now leads her
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 into great danger
00:09:35 --> 00:09:38 she's come
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 to a moment
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 of decision
00:09:39 --> 00:09:42 what is she
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 going to do
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 she now knows
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 God
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 and knowing God
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 forces action
