00:00:06 --> 00:00:10 here we've been working through the early chapters of Joshua in the Old Testament
00:00:10 --> 00:00:15 last week we're in chapter 7 tonight we're in chapter 8 and chapter 7 was a brutal story of
00:00:15 --> 00:00:23 God's judgment and chapters 7 and 8 go together as one story and so basically what that means is
00:00:23 --> 00:00:30 we're back into blood and guts territory again tonight as we have just heard as James read out
00:00:30 --> 00:00:39 to us all the people of AI are slaughtered 12 men and women are slaughtered it's a it's a massacre
00:00:39 --> 00:00:47 and on one level we're kind of used to massacres to a degree I mean we live in a in a world that
00:00:47 --> 00:00:58 as I read just very recently that since the end of World War II conflicts have trebled in number
00:00:58 --> 00:01:05 around our world and all sorts of things like you know Kenya and Syria and Somalia and just massacred
00:01:05 --> 00:01:10 hundreds of people dying all over the place and so on one level we're used to massacres even though
00:01:10 --> 00:01:17 we're repulsed by them but what makes this one particularly hard is that God is caught up in
00:01:17 --> 00:01:24 at all it's actually in fact on his orders and so the question that we have of texts like this as we
00:01:24 --> 00:01:33 did last week and Chris alluded to this is what sort of God does that make him that I think is the
00:01:33 --> 00:01:39 struggle that we have with this text the early sections of Joshua with the conquest of the land
00:01:39 --> 00:01:49 of Canaan what sort of God is this well the the prominent atheist the tele-evangelist for atheism
00:01:49 --> 00:01:56 Richard Dawkins has a little doubt on what sort of God this is he describes him in his book the God
00:01:56 --> 00:02:02 delusion on page 31 as the God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all
00:02:02 --> 00:02:10 fiction a jealous and proud of it a petty unjust unforgiving control freak a vindictive bloodthirsty
00:02:10 --> 00:02:19 ethnic cleanser a misogynist homophobic racist infants infanticidal genocidal filocidal pestilential
00:02:19 --> 00:02:29 megalomaniacal sadomacistic capriciously malevolent bully there's a whole lot of adjectives that are
00:02:29 --> 00:02:36 thrown together there some of which don't appear in the dictionary and it's the
00:02:36 --> 00:02:44 what Dawkins Dawkins's problem is that he he knows what he thinks God is like the God of the Old
00:02:44 --> 00:02:48 Testament and Dawkins's problem is not trying to understand God which is what we're trying to do
00:02:48 --> 00:02:52 here tonight Dawkins's problem is trying to understand people who try to understand God
00:02:52 --> 00:02:58 that's his problem and so this is just you know when you read that you hear that sort of stuff you
00:02:58 --> 00:03:04 think he's gone way over the top he's in fact offensive which is what he's deliberately trying
00:03:04 --> 00:03:10 to do in the God delusion he's trying to be offensive but as we face a chapter like this one
00:03:10 --> 00:03:18 that we're looking at here in in Joshua 8 however much we want to sort of back away from from a Dawkins
00:03:18 --> 00:03:26 and say that he's gone way over the top and we want to say that's in fact not my God we are still
00:03:26 --> 00:03:33 I think in our modern context a little embarrassed about these sorts of chapters we're a little bit
00:03:33 --> 00:03:40 uncomfortable with these chapters in fact if we you know jumping in to read the Bible the first time
00:03:40 --> 00:03:46 with people we don't normally suggest you start at places like Joshua we go with more sort of you
00:03:46 --> 00:03:53 know the birth of Jesus and work through the Gospels a year ago sorry a number of years ago a lady I know
00:03:53 --> 00:03:58 rejected Christianity she'd become a Christian a couple of years earlier threw herself into the
00:03:58 --> 00:04:05 life of the church and she rejected Christianity on the basis of reading Joshua 7 and 8 for the very
00:04:05 --> 00:04:12 first time and she did that preparing for a Sunday school lesson and I remember her coming to me
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 what kind of God does this
00:04:16 --> 00:04:28 that's the question I think behind many questions about God what kind of God is he and surprisingly
00:04:28 --> 00:04:33 Joshua 7 and 8 don't just raise I think the question for us but actually come up with some of the answers
00:04:33 --> 00:04:38 too if you were here last week then you would have had like Joshua gone through the chilling episode of
00:04:38 --> 00:04:44 Achan sin in the camp the greed the theft the rejection of God's commands the exposure the
00:04:44 --> 00:04:51 humiliation the execution the pile of rocks and the burning of the bodies and and Joshua I think
00:04:51 --> 00:05:00 you know might have been wondering at that point who's next in fact what's next as Chris said it was
00:05:00 --> 00:05:05 good news up to that point victory after victory victory and all of a sudden boom this this encounter
00:05:05 --> 00:05:11 which just gutted the people of God and so the opening of chapter 8 is remarkably comforting and
00:05:11 --> 00:05:18 reassuring God says to Joshua do not be afraid do not be discouraged and the Lord said that to
00:05:18 --> 00:05:24 Joshua because understandably he was afraid he was discouraged what kind of God orders this
00:05:24 --> 00:05:31 after the events of chapter 7 perhaps he was wondering if God in fact was still angry with him
00:05:31 --> 00:05:36 you might know that feeling Chris in fact start off last week you know what it is to have someone
00:05:36 --> 00:05:44 really angry with you you remember that feeling someone really angry with you and what I find is
00:05:44 --> 00:05:50 not so much the person getting angry with me but it's the after effect it's the someone gets angry
00:05:50 --> 00:05:54 with you and you have that feeling of uncertainty every time you see them that maybe there's probably
00:05:54 --> 00:05:59 still that grudge there they've still got that issue with you they're brooding over the anger that is
00:05:59 --> 00:06:04 the feeling that the anger just continues and continues and continues and I suspect that my
00:06:04 --> 00:06:10 kids experience that for me sometimes I get angry with them about something and then you just can
00:06:10 --> 00:06:18 tell by the way they approach you afterwards for some time as to is dad safe is he still angry with me
00:06:18 --> 00:06:23 and you've got to kind of you know give them reassurance that it's all dealt with and stuff like that
00:06:23 --> 00:06:29 I think that we often talk in terms of three strikes and you're out make three mistakes and that's the end of the
00:06:29 --> 00:06:35 road for you and sometimes we even operate like that spiritually as if God is a one strike and you're out
00:06:35 --> 00:06:44 kind of God and so after the disaster in the judgment of chapter 7 God makes it clear that he's not that
00:06:44 --> 00:06:52 kind of God at all his anger with the death of Achan his anger is actually turned away
00:06:52 --> 00:07:01 and so he approaches his people with reassurance he's a God of grace he's a God of the second chance
00:07:01 --> 00:07:08 the you know 22nd chance of the 2222nd chance and so on and so on he is the God who embraces his
00:07:08 --> 00:07:15 people in spite of the mistakes and the sins and the flaws he's the God who delivers on his promise in
00:07:15 --> 00:07:24 spite of his people not deserving that promise his anger was satisfied with the death of Achan
00:07:24 --> 00:07:31 and now he brings a word of comfort and reassurance his generosity in his goodness and his grace is
00:07:31 --> 00:07:37 seen in fact in verse 1 as we continue on take the whole army with you and go up and attack Ai for I
00:07:37 --> 00:07:44 have delivered into your hands the king of Ai his people his city and his land you shall do to Ai and
00:07:44 --> 00:07:53 as king as you did to Jericho and his its king except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for
00:07:53 --> 00:08:02 yourselves see what they're saying if only Achan had waited
00:08:02 --> 00:08:11 there was no need for the greed and the coveting of Jericho he could have freely enjoyed all of God's
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 provision at Ai
00:08:12 --> 00:08:24 in Dale Ralph Davis's commentary on Joshua he has this intriguing phrase he uses to reflect on these
00:08:24 --> 00:08:32 verses he calls it serpent theology he's picking up the image of the serpent the devil in Genesis 3
00:08:32 --> 00:08:39 and serpent theology is thinking about God the way that the devil thinks about God as opposed to the
00:08:39 --> 00:08:45 way that God has revealed himself to us and part of sinful serpent theology is to put our attention on
00:08:45 --> 00:08:51 God's restrictions rather than his generous provision and that's what happens in Genesis chapter 3 in the
00:08:51 --> 00:08:57 garden of Eden the serpent's word to Eve do you remember it did God really say that you must not eat of
00:08:57 --> 00:09:03 any tree of the garden well no that's not what God said at all
00:09:03 --> 00:09:15 but the devil wanted Eve and he wants us to imagine that that's exactly what God said he focuses on our
00:09:15 --> 00:09:23 attention on what we can't do or what we shouldn't do as Christians rather than all that we enjoy as God's
00:09:23 --> 00:09:33 people have you found yourself borrowing serpent theology at all it it's the theology that paints God as a
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 killjoy it puts the spotlight on the
00:09:35 --> 00:09:42 restrictions it it blinds us to the God who generously provides it ignores the
00:09:42 --> 00:09:48 beauty and the wonder and the provision and the perfection of the garden of Eden and it takes your attention off that and
00:09:48 --> 00:09:53 focuses on one restriction do not eat from the fruit of that tree
00:09:53 --> 00:10:07 Achan would have had every need met if only he had trusted every word that proceeded from the mouth of God and
00:10:07 --> 00:10:11 obediently waited but he didn't
00:10:11 --> 00:10:16 God never seeks to impoverish his people
00:10:16 --> 00:10:25 it is only as his people lose sight of his generosity his provision his goodness that the cancer of covetedness
00:10:25 --> 00:10:33 consumes them I actually think that recognizing God as a giving God is the prerequisite for our
00:10:33 --> 00:10:39 faithfulness we need to understand that he's a giving generous merciful God it's a prerequisite to
00:10:39 --> 00:10:46 faithfulness contentment with God's goodness is our antidote for faithlessness
00:10:46 --> 00:10:53 so what kind of God are you we can see he is a generous and he's a merciful God
00:10:53 --> 00:10:59 notice too that he is a sovereign God God's sovereignty is wonderfully displayed throughout this chapter
00:10:59 --> 00:11:03 he's the he's the one with all the battle plans he gives all the orders
00:11:03 --> 00:11:10 and yet it feels quite different than Jericho Jericho seemed more like a miracle than than AI if you like
00:11:10 --> 00:11:15 it begins with God's instruction in verse 2 set an ambush behind the city and then you watch all of
00:11:15 --> 00:11:23 Joshua's actions from chapter from verse 3 to 17 it is a classic lure and ambush strategy
00:11:23 --> 00:11:26 Joshua hides a bunch of blokes behind the city to set a trap
00:11:26 --> 00:11:33 and he grabs the rest of the blokes with him marches up to the front door knocks on the front door
00:11:33 --> 00:11:38 they open it blows some raspberries ticks them off they grab their army they come off after him and he
00:11:38 --> 00:11:44 retreats and they think oh this is fantastic we've just beaten the Israelites and we're gonna do it again
00:11:44 --> 00:11:51 so let's finalize the deal and they send out everyone against the Israelites and it leaves
00:11:51 --> 00:12:00 the city open and vulnerable and then we come to God's next instruction to Joshua in verse 18
00:12:00 --> 00:12:05 hold out towards AI the javelin that is in your hand for into your hand I will deliver the city
00:12:05 --> 00:12:12 so that's Joshua what he does he holds this stick this spear over there that's it that's the signal
00:12:12 --> 00:12:18 does his instruction it's the signal springs the trap defeats the king the army in the city of AI
00:12:18 --> 00:12:27 and when you read the story you notice that God is as every little bit as much in control and work here as he was in Jericho
00:12:27 --> 00:12:39 what kind of God is he he's a sovereign powerful God with the power of God the great Jericho could be taken
00:12:39 --> 00:12:45 without it the people of God couldn't even take the little outpost of AI
00:12:45 --> 00:12:54 how utterly dependent his people are upon him upon his generosity and his power
00:12:54 --> 00:13:00 so he's a God of generosity and goodness he's a God of sovereignty and power
00:13:00 --> 00:13:07 and so now we come back to let's deal with the elephant in the room
00:13:07 --> 00:13:19 it's hard to be to not notice God's awesome and destructive judgment in this chapter there is no denying it this this reads like a terrible massacre
00:13:19 --> 00:13:28 verse 24 when Israel had finished killing all the men of AI in the fields and in the desert where they had chased them and when every one of them had beaten put
00:13:28 --> 00:13:34 uh been put to the sword all the Israelites to return to AI and killed those who were in it
00:13:34 --> 00:13:38 12 men and women fell that day all the people of AI
00:13:38 --> 00:13:48 all of AI are dead and it's God it's people who are doing it under the orders of God
00:13:48 --> 00:13:51 what kind of God are you
00:13:51 --> 00:13:54 that's the question
00:13:54 --> 00:14:02 that question is an enormous question and frankly we do not have the time
00:14:02 --> 00:14:07 to sit here and to go through it all
00:14:07 --> 00:14:10 so I'm going to encourage you to buy a book
00:14:10 --> 00:14:14 called The God I Do Not Understand by Chris Wright
00:14:14 --> 00:14:23 um it has a couple of very helpful chapters that addresses um several of the questions that people ask
00:14:23 --> 00:14:27 and addresses specifically the conquest of Canaan
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 very very helpful little book
00:14:29 --> 00:14:34 um there uh just as an advertisement point over here
00:14:34 --> 00:14:37 uh there's not many hard copies available
00:14:37 --> 00:14:42 but which is unusual for a book that was so helpful and it was only published in 2009
00:14:42 --> 00:14:47 but there are e-book versions so you tech savvy people you can go to Kurong download the reader
00:14:47 --> 00:14:50 if you haven't got the reader and buy the book very very helpful
00:14:50 --> 00:14:56 alternatively if you are a small group leader here tonight
00:14:56 --> 00:14:58 or you're particularly turned up about this question

00:15:04 --> 00:15:07 really really helpful stuff so if you're a small group leader
00:15:07 --> 00:15:09 and you're actually going through the book of Joshua
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 um come and grab a copy
00:15:11 --> 00:15:16 or uh Chris can send you or I can send you an electronic version
00:15:16 --> 00:15:18 it's it's substantial reading
00:15:18 --> 00:15:22 but it is very very very helpful reading
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 about trying to understand
00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 what's happening in the Canaan context
00:15:26 --> 00:15:29 but I'll just mention one thing
00:15:29 --> 00:15:32 to help us understand what's happening here
00:15:32 --> 00:15:37 there is a backstory a behind the scenes story
00:15:37 --> 00:15:39 to Joshua 7 and 8
00:15:39 --> 00:15:43 and the clue comes for us surprisingly in verse 29
00:15:43 --> 00:15:48 where we read that Joshua hung the body of the king of Ai on a tree
00:15:48 --> 00:15:53 now there is more to that act than just mere intimidation
00:15:53 --> 00:15:56 and gloating over a military victory
00:15:56 --> 00:15:59 Joshua knows his bible
00:15:59 --> 00:16:03 and the significance of what he's actually doing here
00:16:03 --> 00:16:07 he would have known the words in Deuteronomy 22
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 that say
00:16:08 --> 00:16:13 if a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 and his body is hung on a tree
00:16:14 --> 00:16:18 you must not leave his body on the tree overnight
00:16:18 --> 00:16:21 which is why Joshua took it down and they buried it
00:16:21 --> 00:16:24 be sure to bury him that same day
00:16:24 --> 00:16:28 because anyone who is hung on a tree
00:16:28 --> 00:16:31 is under God's curse
00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 in other words
00:16:33 --> 00:16:36 what's happening in this conquest
00:16:36 --> 00:16:38 is God's judgment
00:16:38 --> 00:16:40 it is his curse
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 divine judgment is being enacted here
00:16:43 --> 00:16:46 now that doesn't make it any less violent or any nicer
00:16:46 --> 00:16:49 but it does change the moral context
00:16:49 --> 00:16:52 it changes the framework or the lens
00:16:52 --> 00:16:54 through which we view this chapter
00:16:54 --> 00:16:56 if you dig back further
00:16:56 --> 00:16:58 you realise that
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 not only is this
00:16:59 --> 00:17:03 God's judgment on the sins of these people
00:17:03 --> 00:17:05 sins that range from sexual perversion to child sacrifice
00:17:05 --> 00:17:09 but it's a judgment that's been a long time coming
00:17:09 --> 00:17:12 you see a bit over 400 years before this is happening
00:17:12 --> 00:17:15 Abraham lived here
00:17:15 --> 00:17:19 he lived in this place called Canaan
00:17:19 --> 00:17:24 and he was told by God when he lived there
00:17:24 --> 00:17:26 that he would be the father of a nation
00:17:26 --> 00:17:30 he was told that his descendants would be slaved
00:17:30 --> 00:17:32 and mistreated in a foreign land for 400 years
00:17:32 --> 00:17:34 and then God would bring them back
00:17:34 --> 00:17:36 and that they would conquer this land
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 the promised land
00:17:37 --> 00:17:41 and he was also told this
00:17:41 --> 00:17:43 Genesis 15 verse 16
00:17:43 --> 00:17:45 in the fourth generation
00:17:45 --> 00:17:48 your descendants will come back here
00:17:48 --> 00:17:52 for the sin of the Amorites
00:17:52 --> 00:17:55 has not yet reached its full measure
00:17:55 --> 00:17:57 see what it's saying there
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 400 years earlier
00:17:58 --> 00:18:01 God acknowledged the sinfulness of the Amorites
00:18:01 --> 00:18:04 and he could have judged them at that particular moment
00:18:04 --> 00:18:06 but he didn't
00:18:06 --> 00:18:09 their sin had not yet exhausted God's patience
00:18:09 --> 00:18:12 and yet over 400 years
00:18:12 --> 00:18:13 the sin didn't stop
00:18:13 --> 00:18:15 another 400 years of sinning
00:18:15 --> 00:18:15 and defying
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 and exploiting
00:18:16 --> 00:18:18 ignoring all the warnings
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 before God said
00:18:19 --> 00:18:19 that's enough
00:18:19 --> 00:18:24 and judgment fell
00:18:24 --> 00:18:27 so what king of God
00:18:27 --> 00:18:29 what kind of God are you?
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 well the king of Ai
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 and that pile of rocks
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 over his body
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 in verse 29
00:18:34 --> 00:18:36 reminds us that he's a God
00:18:36 --> 00:18:38 who's not to be trifled with
00:18:38 --> 00:18:41 he's not a God
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 to be messed around with
00:18:42 --> 00:18:44 he's not a God
00:18:44 --> 00:18:45 that we deal with him
00:18:45 --> 00:18:46 on
00:18:46 --> 00:18:47 our terms
00:18:47 --> 00:18:51 he is a God
00:18:51 --> 00:18:52 who delivers on his promise
00:18:52 --> 00:18:53 to bring
00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 not just mercy
00:18:54 --> 00:18:55 but justice
00:18:55 --> 00:18:55 to
00:18:55 --> 00:18:58 and so here's another bit
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 of serpent theology
00:18:59 --> 00:19:00 that often
00:19:00 --> 00:19:01 infects our minds
00:19:01 --> 00:19:02 it's the thinking
00:19:02 --> 00:19:03 that God won't do
00:19:03 --> 00:19:04 what he says
00:19:04 --> 00:19:04 he will do
00:19:04 --> 00:19:07 again remember
00:19:07 --> 00:19:09 chapter 3 of Genesis
00:19:09 --> 00:19:10 in the garden of Eden
00:19:10 --> 00:19:11 the serpent tempting Eve
00:19:11 --> 00:19:12 to take and eat
00:19:12 --> 00:19:12 for the fruit
00:19:12 --> 00:19:14 and she remembers
00:19:14 --> 00:19:15 the warning of disobedience
00:19:15 --> 00:19:16 you will surely die
00:19:16 --> 00:19:17 and the serpent
00:19:17 --> 00:19:18 mocks it out
00:19:18 --> 00:19:20 no you won't
00:19:20 --> 00:19:22 you won't die
00:19:22 --> 00:19:25 don't believe it
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 God will not hold you
00:19:26 --> 00:19:27 accountable
00:19:27 --> 00:19:31 and the
00:19:31 --> 00:19:33 getting kicked out
00:19:33 --> 00:19:34 of the garden of Eden
00:19:34 --> 00:19:36 and that pile of rocks
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 in chapter 8
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 verse 29
00:19:38 --> 00:19:40 reminds us that God
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 does in fact
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 hold sin accountable
00:19:42 --> 00:19:45 and that he will judge
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 and that he expects
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 every word that proceeds
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 from his mouth
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 to be obeyed
00:19:49 --> 00:19:52 what kind of God
00:19:52 --> 00:19:52 have you
00:19:52 --> 00:19:55 he's not a safe one
00:19:55 --> 00:19:57 it is unwise
00:19:57 --> 00:19:58 to mistake
00:19:58 --> 00:19:59 God's patience
00:19:59 --> 00:19:59 for weakness
00:19:59 --> 00:20:01 or for lack of resolve
00:20:01 --> 00:20:02 don't make the mistake
00:20:02 --> 00:20:03 of thinking
00:20:03 --> 00:20:04 he hasn't
00:20:04 --> 00:20:06 and so he won't
00:20:06 --> 00:20:07 or
00:20:07 --> 00:20:09 I've got away with it
00:20:09 --> 00:20:10 and so I will
00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 get away with it
00:20:11 --> 00:20:13 don't make that mistake
00:20:13 --> 00:20:15 but I think
00:20:15 --> 00:20:16 there's some
00:20:16 --> 00:20:16 in terms of the
00:20:16 --> 00:20:17 back story here
00:20:17 --> 00:20:18 there's a little bit
00:20:18 --> 00:20:18 more for us
00:20:18 --> 00:20:19 as Christians
00:20:19 --> 00:20:20 as Christians
00:20:20 --> 00:20:21 reading a chapter
00:20:21 --> 00:20:22 like this
00:20:22 --> 00:20:22 we tend to put
00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 ourselves in the
00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 Israelite shoes
00:20:24 --> 00:20:25 we tend to
00:20:25 --> 00:20:26 identify with God's
00:20:26 --> 00:20:26 people
00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 looking
00:20:27 --> 00:20:29 to step into
00:20:29 --> 00:20:30 their inheritance
00:20:30 --> 00:20:30 of all of God's
00:20:30 --> 00:20:31 promises
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 and if we're not
00:20:32 --> 00:20:33 careful
00:20:33 --> 00:20:34 it can lead us
00:20:34 --> 00:20:35 to a smug
00:20:35 --> 00:20:36 or even a
00:20:36 --> 00:20:37 patronizing
00:20:37 --> 00:20:38 complacency
00:20:38 --> 00:20:39 you know I'm part
00:20:39 --> 00:20:40 of the people of God
00:20:40 --> 00:20:41 that's good for me
00:20:41 --> 00:20:42 but boo to everyone
00:20:42 --> 00:20:42 else
00:20:42 --> 00:20:45 we're the good guys
00:20:45 --> 00:20:46 while they
00:20:46 --> 00:20:46 over there
00:20:46 --> 00:20:47 whoever they are
00:20:47 --> 00:20:48 are in fact
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 the bad guys
00:20:49 --> 00:20:50 and they deserve
00:20:50 --> 00:20:51 this
