00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 Now, the song that they sang is by Taylor Swift.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:18 It's called Bad Blood, and it came out a couple of years ago,
00:00:18 --> 00:00:22 and it's all about a relationship breaking down.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 We've got bad blood.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 There is conflict between us.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 It used to be mad love,
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 which is often how I describe my relationship with my wife,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 but we've got problems,
00:00:36 --> 00:00:38 and I don't think that we can solve them.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:40 You have hit me where I am weak.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 Now, this is a very common type of song for Taylor Swift,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:46 if you've followed her career at all.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:48 She has relationships that start and end,
00:00:49 --> 00:00:51 and she writes half a dozen songs about them.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:53 She's got whole albums dedicated to her relationships.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:57 But this song is all about the pain of a relationship
00:00:57 --> 00:00:59 not being where it should be,
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 and the longing for that relationship to be healthy.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 I've felt that pain before,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 longing to be closer to friends that we've moved away from,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 longing to be better friends.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 And the psalm that John read for us,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:15 Psalm 103,
00:01:16 --> 00:01:17 shares these same pains,
00:01:18 --> 00:01:18 these same emotions.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 It was written by King David.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:23 He lived 1 years before Jesus,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 which is roughly 3 years ago,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 and he experienced similar feelings of pain.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 It appears that in this psalm,
00:01:33 --> 00:01:35 David is feeling distant from God,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 and he wants to be closer to him.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:43 And so David rebukes and corrects himself about how he feels,
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 and he brings his whole self to praise God
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 by remembering what he has done
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 and what God continues to do.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:53 Over the next three weeks,
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 in this series called Heart Songs,
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 my desire is that we would get to know the psalms,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 so that these songs in the Bible,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 these psalms would become like the cry of our hearts,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 so that we would become like a water balloon
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 that when it's pricked, water pours out.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:13 But when we experience pain and joy,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 the psalms would pour out of us.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:18 The psalms are really wonderful.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 It's a really wonderful part of the Old Testament.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:23 It's a part of the Bible that we,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:25 as a staff team, look at every week.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 We use this devotion on the psalms.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 It's called My Rock, My Refuge.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:34 And because it is so valuable,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:35 spending time in the psalms,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:38 I would like someone to have this.

00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 he cried out with the words of Psalm 22
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 to convey the depths of his anguish.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:27 Psalm 41 gives him words to express his pain
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 when his friends desert him.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 He commits his spirit into God's hands
00:03:32 --> 00:03:33 with words from Psalm 31
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 and he drinks the cup of wrath,
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 which is from Psalm 75.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:42 Jesus' whole life is immersed with the psalms
00:03:42 --> 00:03:46 and when suffering and pain and grief come,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 it shows his view of God.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 My desire is for us as a church
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 to know these psalms,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 to know these heart songs of the Bible
00:03:55 --> 00:03:59 because they beat with the pain of everyday life
00:03:59 --> 00:04:03 with guilt and joy and satisfaction
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 and fear and life with God.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 So we're going to spend three weeks
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 looking at three emotions,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 three feelings that these songs resonate with.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:14 First of all today,
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 the feeling of being distant from God,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 the feeling of being tempted,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 and then finally joy.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 And so today,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 as we learn a new song,
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 Psalm 103,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 David is going to model what it's like
00:04:30 --> 00:04:32 to feel distant from God
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 and then to see how amazing it is
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 to meditate on God
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 and all that he has done for us.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 So please pray with me
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 as we jump into Psalm 103.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 God, thank you that we
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 can talk to you today,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 that you have done everything possible
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 so that we can have relationship with you.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 Remind us of your goodness today,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 please, Lord.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 Amen.
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 Please have your Bibles open,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 have your St. Paul's app open.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 You can be taking notes in that

00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 We're in Psalm 103 today.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 Verse 1.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 Praise the Lord, my soul,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 all my inmost being,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 praise his holy name.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 Praise the Lord, my soul,
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 and forget not all his benefits.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 It's as if David is feeling distant,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 and so he rebukes himself
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 and brings all of who he is before God.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 He reminds himself to praise God,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 to speak words of thanks
00:05:33 --> 00:05:35 and to speak words of gratitude.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 And he's calling his whole self
00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 from his very inmost being,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 his secret thoughts,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 his hidden motives,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 his actions,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 all the way to his fingertips
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 and his choices.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 Everything that he is,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 he brings to God
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 to praise his holy name
00:05:54 --> 00:05:57 because God is worth that praise.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 He is deserving of that praise.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 Rarely will we speak over the top
00:06:03 --> 00:06:06 about how great a person is.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 Maybe we do it at a wedding speech.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 I'm not sure if you've been
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 to a wedding recently.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 Weddings, you know,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 the groom will get up
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 at the end of the night
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 and, you know,
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 he'll speak effusively.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 He'll speak over the top
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 about how wonderful his bride is.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 I'll point to my bride as I do this.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 My bride, you know,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 she's so radiant.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 She's amazing.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 She completes me.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 She makes coffee taste great again.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:29 You know,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 you make the stars shine.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 When I see you,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 my heart stops
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 and my breath catches
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 only for it to start again
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 when you say that you love me.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 But the object of David's
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 gushing praise in this psalm
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 is one who actually deserves them.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 One who actually made the stars
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 and can stop hearts
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 and start them again.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 Our God is holy and perfect.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 Everything he does is good.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 He is wonderful
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 and he chooses to love us.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:02 And it is, as David said,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 really easy to forget to praise God.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 We are much more likely to think
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 that we are deserving of praise,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 surround ourselves with people
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 who like to praise us.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 I love praise.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 I love hearing how good I am.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 I noticed the other day
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 how sinful I am in this way
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 because I'd taken the clothes in
00:07:25 --> 00:07:25 off the line.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:26 You know,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 it was one of those rare days
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 we've had recently
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 which was really warm
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 and I brought the clothes in
00:07:31 --> 00:07:31 off the line
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 and there I am waiting
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 for Elissa to get home
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 so that she could come
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 and pat me on the head
00:07:36 --> 00:07:36 and say,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 oh, well done,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 getting the clothes off the line.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 And I realized and went,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:40 ah,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 I'm just waiting for someone
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 to come and tell me
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 how great I am.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 That is just so vain.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 What a terrible thing.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 But this is a God
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 who deserves all praise.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 And David rebukes himself
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 and says to himself,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 don't forget to praise God.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 When we live as if we are deserving of praise,
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 we can puff ourselves up,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 make God smaller,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 and we start to drift
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 from a close relationship
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 of dependence
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 where we move to one
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 where we think that we're great
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 and any problems in our life
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 are God's fault.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:18 God,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 why have you done this?
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 And so David begins
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 by rebuking himself,
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 going back to Scripture,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 particularly to Genesis,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 remembering the God
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 who has made all things
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 to praise God
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 with his inmost being
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 because God deserves it.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:35 He is holy
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 and so David does not
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 want to forget that.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 This is the antidote
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 to a distant heart.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 Meditating on who God is
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 and all that he has done
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 is the antidote
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 to a distant heart.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 And so David reminds himself
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 of who this God is
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 and why he should praise him.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 Verse 3,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:54 have a look.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 This is the God who,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:56 verse 3,
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 forgives all your sins,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 heals all your diseases,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 who redeems your life
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 from the pit.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 He crowns you with love
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 and compassion,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 who satisfies with good things
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 so that your youth
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 is renewed like the eagles.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 The greatest benefit here
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 is that God forgives
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 because there can be
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 no relationship
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 without him,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 without him forgiving us
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 because it's our sin
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 that stands between us.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 He deals with it.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 He heals diseases.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 In the ancient world,
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 they didn't have antibiotics.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 So even a little cut
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 on the finger,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 if it got infected,
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 it could spell disaster.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 There was a very real need
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 to depend upon God
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 with health.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 And if anything,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 you know,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 COVID has reminded us
00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 how easily humans
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 can be killed
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 by diseases.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 And it reminds us
00:09:51 --> 00:09:51 how dependent
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 we need to be
00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 not on our own selves
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 and our medical capacity,
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 but on the God
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 who makes all things.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 Living into a long life
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 was seen as a blessing
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 from God
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 and a reason
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 to praise God.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 And so it's,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 in verse 4,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 it's likely that
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 when David mentions
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 life being redeemed
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 from the pit,
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 he's talking about
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 a physical ailment.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 God has saved him
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 from death's door.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 He's pulled him up
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 from the grave.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 And so he should be saved.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 But he doesn't just
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 pull him up
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 from the grave.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 He doesn't just
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 pull him up
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 from death and despair.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 But David reflects
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 on God
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 crowning him with life.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 Crowning him.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 And it's such a wonderful picture
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 of God's love
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 and compassion.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 compassion.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 Crowns you
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 with love
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 and compassion.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 It's this outward sign
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 for all to see.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 The crown on the head
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 of love and compassion.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 It's the wedding ring sign
00:10:50 --> 00:10:50 that says,
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 I have love
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 and compassion
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 for my wife.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 David rejoices
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 in God's love
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 and compassion.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 He is forgiven.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 He is lifted up.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 And so David
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 has started
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 to change
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 his experience
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 of feeling distant
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 by reminding himself
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 of who God is.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 Of how good
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 he has been
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 to him personally.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 And he moves
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 from thinking
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 about just himself
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 to meditating
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 on all that God
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 has done
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 for Israel.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 And so David
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 calls on all of Israel
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 to praise God.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 Verse 9,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 David speaks
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 of God's love
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 for Israel.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 He will not always
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 accuse.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 He will not
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 harbor his anger
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 forever.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 He does not
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 treat us
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 as our sins
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 deserve,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 nor repay us
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 according to
00:11:37 --> 00:11:37 our iniquities.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 He doesn't harbor
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 anger.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 He forgives.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 He doesn't hold
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 grudges.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 And so he doesn't
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 treat his people
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 like they deserve.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 But,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 verse 11,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 his love.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 As high
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 as the heavens
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 are above the earth,
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 so great
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 is his love
00:11:57 --> 00:11:57 for those
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 who fear him.
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 As far as the,
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 which way is east?
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 That way?
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 Is that east?
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 As far as
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 the east
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 is from the west,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 so far has he
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 removed our
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 transgressions from us.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 This is a wonderful
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 piece of poetry,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 brothers and sisters.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 His love
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 is boundless
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 and our sin
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 is gone.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 And like a father,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 he has compassion
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 on us.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 David goes from
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 these wild,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 unimaginable things,
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 as high as the heaven
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 is above the earth,
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 so great
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 is his love
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 for us.
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 As far as the east
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 is from the west,
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 he has removed
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 our transgressions.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 These big images,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 David goes from
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 these really
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 grand images
