Authentic Love

00:00:00 --> 00:00:08 Good morning, everyone. It would be great if you had a Bible in front of you, and so stick your hand up if you need one of those.
00:00:08 --> 00:00:15 We've also got some service outlines so that you can follow along where we're heading, and it'd be great if you could take some notes.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:22 It's a fairly lengthy text, and so it'd be good to make it easy for you to follow along if you had some notes in front of you,
00:00:22 --> 00:00:28 and at least have the Bible passage open in front of you to see where it's coming from, what we're talking about.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:35 The greatest danger to the church is not from without, but from within.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:41 It's been repeatedly demonstrated in church history.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:49 Probably one dramatic example is that of the German Protestant church in the last century.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:57 The Bible was so undermined that very few pastors saw it as the infallible Word of God,
00:00:57 --> 00:01:02 and they had lost as a church the centrality of the gospel.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:09 There were remarkable exceptions, like the courageous pastor Martin Nehomola.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:21 In 1933, he preached on the occasion of Martin Luther's 450th birthday about how tragic it would be
00:01:21 --> 00:01:31 if the devil filled German minds with the delusion that what they needed was not the grace of God,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 but the courage of Martin Luther.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:42 The very next evening, in an eerie fulfillment of his own preaching,
00:01:43 --> 00:01:50 20 Christians under the umbrella of the German Evangelical Church,
00:01:50 --> 00:01:54 led by bishops and church officials in full regalia,
00:01:54 --> 00:01:59 gathered in the newly completed Berlin Sports Palace.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 And after singing,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 Now we thank thee all,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 we thank,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 now thank we all our God,
00:02:08 --> 00:02:10 a German pastor,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 Joachim Hossenfelder,
00:02:12 --> 00:02:20 announced that he was implementing the infamous Aryan paragraph in his diocese
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 that dismissed all Christian Jews from church office effective immediately,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:32 aligning the German Evangelical Church with the Nazi Party.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:34 During the evening,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:35 it was also announced,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:36 among other things,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 that Nehomola was suspended,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 that the Bible was from now to be examined
00:02:42 --> 00:02:47 for all its non-German elements,
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 that is,
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 cut out all Judaism,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 and that a proud,
00:02:53 --> 00:02:54 heroic Jesus
00:02:54 --> 00:02:59 was to replace the model of the suffering servant
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 who died on the cross for the sins of humanity.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 The speech
00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 was interrupted
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 again and again
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 with the applause
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 and the cheers of 20 people.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 Not a single bishop,
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 not a single church leader
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 stood to disagree.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 The state church had imploded from within
00:03:27 --> 00:03:32 and people's salvation was at stake.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 This is very similar to the picture that's happening here in
00:03:36 --> 00:03:40 the book of Corinth that we're looking at at the moment.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 Paul had started this church of Corinth,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 the gospel was preached,
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 people became Christians,
00:03:47 --> 00:03:48 deep friendships were made,
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 the bonds of Christian love were formed,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 and when Paul moved on,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 opponents moved in
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 with a different gospel.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 They started to drive a wedge between Paul and the church.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 They started to criticize Paul's life
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 and Paul's message.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 And it got so bad
00:04:08 --> 00:04:10 that the church he founded
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 started to believe that Paul
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 was the false guy.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 He was worldly,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:18 insincere,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:18 he was a coward,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:19 he was weak,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 he was a theological deviant
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 who preached a false gospel.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 Paul,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 the founder,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:26 was now treated
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 as the imposter,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 a false apostle,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:29 corrupt,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 and only in the religious business
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 in order to exploit people.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 He was seen as the fake one,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:41 someone who talked tough in letters
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 but was a wimp face to face.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 And the Corinthian church
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 in this letter
00:04:49 --> 00:04:53 is in danger of walking away from Paul,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 walking away from the authentic good news
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 of Jesus Christ.
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 They can't see that.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 They think they're just being progressive
00:05:02 --> 00:05:07 but that's what Paul's fighting for here.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 Their very eternal life.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:14 And the major thrust of this letter
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 is a call for them to trust him
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 because he's the authentic apostle
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 with the authentic gospel.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 Paul's defense of his gospel
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 and his ministry
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 and his character in 2 Corinthians
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 takes us right to the very heart
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 of what it means to be a Christian leader
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 but also what it means
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 to be a Christ-like follower
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 of the Lord Jesus.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:44 Paul is making it explicitly clear
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 what it means to be part of God's family,
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 the family that God has called together
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 through the gospel of the Lord Jesus.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 So the section that we're dealing with today
00:05:58 --> 00:06:01 in chapter 6 verse 11
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 through to 7.16
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 and especially closing off
00:06:08 --> 00:06:11 at verse 1 and 2 of chapter 7
00:06:11 --> 00:06:15 is the climax of Paul's defense
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 of his ministry
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 that he started in chapter 2 verse 14.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 And this section begins
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 with a plea from the heart
00:06:23 --> 00:06:26 to return the love that he has shown them.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 Have a look at chapter 6 verse 11.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 and open wide our hearts to you.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 We are not withholding our affection from you
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 but you are withholding yours from us.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 As a fair exchange,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 I speak as to my children.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 Open wide your hearts also.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 All that Paul has written
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 and know this,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 what he is about to write
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 comes from a heart of love.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:08 These pages are wet with Paul's tears
00:07:08 --> 00:07:12 as he sees and he hears from this church
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 walking away from the gospel
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 and away from salvation in Jesus.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:19 So there are three things I want to see
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 and if you've got your sermon outline
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 in front of you there,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 you'll see this on your page.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 Three things I want to see
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 from this passage today.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 Firstly, authentic love is tough love.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:33 Secondly, how authentic love leads to salvation.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 And thirdly, an exhortation for us
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 here at this church
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 to practice authentic love.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 So firstly, authentic love is tough love.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 In closing off this section of the letter,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 Paul opens his heart.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 He pleads with this church
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 to return to him in the authentic gospel.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 He says the same thing in chapter 7,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 verses 2 to 4.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 Make room for us in your hearts.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 We have wronged no one.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 We have corrupted no one.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 We have exploited no one.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 I do not say this to condemn you.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 I have said before
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 that you have such a place in our hearts
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 that we would live
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 or we would die with you.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 I have spoken to you
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 with great frankness.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 I take great pride in you.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 I am greatly encouraged
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 in all of our troubles.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 My joy knows no bounds.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 So these are not the words
00:08:29 --> 00:08:33 of a man looking for revenge
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 against the church
00:08:35 --> 00:08:39 that has caused him grief upon grief.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:45 This is him calling them back
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 to love him as he has loved them.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 But the second thing he does
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 is he calls this church
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 to abandon the false teachers
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 and their false gospel.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 And Paul's words here
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 are very strong.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 They are tough.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 They are black and white,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 but they come from a heart of love.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 See, the key is in verse 14.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:12 Do not be yoked together
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 with unbelievers.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 Now this verse
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 is commonly thought of
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 as a warning
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 against marrying unbelievers
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 or entering into
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 contractual relationships
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 with non-Christians.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 It's not.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 That's not what this verse is about.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:33 It is a command
00:09:33 --> 00:09:36 not to be yoked together
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 with those in the church
00:09:38 --> 00:09:41 who oppose the truth.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:47 Unbelieving religious people
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 in the church.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 This whole letter
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 to the church of Corinth
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 helps us to see
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 that the unbelievers here
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 that has been referred to
00:09:57 --> 00:09:59 are his opponents
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 within the church.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 Paul's gospel message
00:10:04 --> 00:10:08 is incompatible
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 with their false gospel.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 You can't meld the two together.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 They're opposed to one another.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 And Paul's gospel,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 the authentic Christian gospel,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 as I said two weeks ago,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 is the good news
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 that God sent his son
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 into the world
00:10:26 --> 00:10:29 to live a perfect life,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 to die as a substitute
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 for sinners,
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 to absorb the anger of God,
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 to turn it away from us,
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 to take away our guilt
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 and our shame,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 provide the gift
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 of right standing before God,
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 and to give eternal joy
00:10:45 --> 00:10:45 through faith
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 in the Lord Jesus Christ,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 alone,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 apart from any works
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 of obedience,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 on our behalf.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 So what Paul is saying here
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 is the stakes
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 are very high.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 Those Corinthians
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 who persist
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 in siding
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 with Paul's opponents
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 will in effect
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 renounce
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 their own salvation.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 That's what they're doing.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 Now this is,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 let me just say,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 this is not a call
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 from the Apostle Paul here
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 to split theological hairs.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 seeing those
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 who disagree with you
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 in the church
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 as unbelievers.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 Church history
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 is tragically full
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 of theological
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 hair splitting.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 Neither is this
00:11:33 --> 00:11:33 a command
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 to bar
00:11:35 --> 00:11:35 unbelievers
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 from the church.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 I mean,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 church is the best place
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 for unbelievers
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 because they get
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 to hear the word
00:11:43 --> 00:11:43 and be loved
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 by the followers
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 of Jesus.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 Jesus.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:49 This is a fight
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 for eternal life.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 We are to disassociate
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 ourselves
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 from complicity
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 with those
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 who would attempt
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 to spread
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 a false gospel
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 within the church.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:07 it means
00:12:07 --> 00:12:09 to disassociate
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 with those
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 who insinuate,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:16 even insinuate,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 that reconciliation
00:12:18 --> 00:12:20 is not all of God
00:12:20 --> 00:12:22 and that you can make peace
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 with God yourself.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 Also,
00:12:26 --> 00:12:26 with those
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 who suggest
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 that the substitutionary
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 death of Jesus
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 on the cross
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 in which God
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 made him
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 to be sin
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 who knew no sin
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 so that in him
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 we might become
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 the righteous
00:12:40 --> 00:12:40 of God
00:12:40 --> 00:12:43 for even those
00:12:43 --> 00:12:43 who would declare
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 that that's not enough
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 to withdraw
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 from people like that.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 It means
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 to reject
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 liberal,
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 moralizing
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 theories
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 of Jesus'
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 work of salvation.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 It means
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 to reject
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 the kind
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 of Christianity
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 that wants
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 to read the Bible
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 with a pair
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 of scissors
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 and cut out
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 anything
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 that's too hard
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 or offensive.
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 It means
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 to reject
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 a salvation
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 by works
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 sentimentality
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 that if you
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 do your best
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 you will make it
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 and that good people
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 will find their way
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 in the end.
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 It means
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 to reject
00:13:18 --> 00:13:20 the modern
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 abomination
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 on the church
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 that is doing
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 untold damage
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 to the poor
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 and the vulnerable
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 around this world.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 The thing
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 called
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 the prosperity
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 gospel.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 gospel
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 and one
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 of the major
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 opponents
00:13:33 --> 00:13:33 of it
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 over the
00:13:34 --> 00:13:34 number
00:13:34 --> 00:13:34 of past
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 decades
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 has been
00:13:36 --> 00:13:36 a guy
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 named
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 Benny Hinn.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:38 You will
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 see him
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 on TV.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 In the past
00:13:41 --> 00:13:41 few weeks
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 he has
00:13:42 --> 00:13:42 indicated
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 that he is
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 now rejecting
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 the prosperity
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 theology
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 and I can
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 only hope
00:13:47 --> 00:13:47 that his
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 repentance
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 is genuine.
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 Paul's
00:13:52 --> 00:13:52 love
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 for this
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 church
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 at Corinth
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 is not
00:13:57 --> 00:13:57 weak.
00:13:57 --> 00:14:00 it
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 doesn't
00:14:01 --> 00:14:01 turn
00:14:01 --> 00:14:01 a blind
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 eye
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 to
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 error
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 and
00:14:03 --> 00:14:03 sin.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 His
00:14:06 --> 00:14:06 love
00:14:06 --> 00:14:06 for them
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 means
00:14:07 --> 00:14:07 he
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 confronts
00:14:08 --> 00:14:08 it.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 It is
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 an
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 authentic
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 robust
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 tough
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 love
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 that is
00:14:15 --> 00:14:15 willing
00:14:15 --> 00:14:15 to call
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 out
00:14:16 --> 00:14:16 error.
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 Now
00:14:20 --> 00:14:20 none of
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 us
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 like to
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 be the
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 recipient
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 of it
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 even
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 when we
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 know
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 it is
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 for our
00:14:26 --> 00:14:26 own
