Passage: 2 Corinthians 12:1-10

00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 you do flying forks, and you climb road nets.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 We went a couple of years ago with a couple of other families.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:53 While the youngest kids have their own little program,
00:00:53 --> 00:00:54 little course to go through,
00:00:55 --> 00:00:59 the older children join us to do the junior and adult course.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 The term and condition says,
00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 practitioner must be 10 years and older,
00:01:07 --> 00:01:09 at least 1.4 meters tall,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 and under 120 kilograms.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 One adult must accompany a junior
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 to make sure they follow all the safety instructions
00:01:21 --> 00:01:27 and get no exception to age, size, or weight.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:33 So we start on the easier course,
00:01:33 --> 00:01:37 and the course gets longer and harder as we approach lunch.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:40 It was still a lot of fun,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:41 and kids have a great time.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:45 However, I noticed that every time
00:01:45 --> 00:01:47 when I fly back to the platform,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 the wheel will get so hard,
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 it will stop short,
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 about 10 to 20 meters away from the platform.
00:01:57 --> 00:01:58 So I literally, the whole morning,
00:01:58 --> 00:01:59 was doing this.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 For the last, every course I've gone through.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 And there is a weight limit
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 on the condition for entry for a very good reason.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 Even though I'm under that weight limit,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:16 I'm very close to it as well.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:21 So while experiencing the challenge on top of the tree,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:27 I have my weight and the gravity as my enemy,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 which is very hard to overcome.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:31 However,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 the enemies that Paul is facing in 2 Corinthians
00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 are beyond what we can imagine.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 Paul is facing enemies from within and without,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 from those that were his colleagues,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:47 went to the same school with him,
00:02:48 --> 00:02:51 pursued the same ideal with him
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 before he became a Christian.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 People that are his kinsmen,
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 but now trace after him to destroy everything
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 he worked hard to build.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 It started as soon as
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 he became a follower of Jesus.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 What he mentioned in 2 Corinthians,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:11 the last will of chapter 11,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 would most likely be the same incident
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 that happened in Acts chapter 9,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 verse 22 to 25.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 Straight after he became a follower of Christ,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 he was preaching about Jesus in Damascus.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 And it says from verse 22,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:32 Saul grew more and more powerful
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 and baffled the Jews living in Damascus
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 by proving that Jesus is a Messiah.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 After many days had gone by,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 there was a conspiracy among the Jews
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 who killed him.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 But Saul learns of their plan.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:47 Day and night,
00:03:47 --> 00:03:49 they kept close watch on the city gate
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 in order to kill him.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 But his followers took him by night
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 and lowered him in a basket
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 for an opening in the wall.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 If you follow along Acts,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 you will see the suffering Paul
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 go through for the sake of Christ.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 In chapter 9, verse 26,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:10 it says people are afraid of him,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 not believing he really was a disciple.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 And then,
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 just a couple of verses after that,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:18 it says he speaks boldly
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 in the name of the Lord,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 talk and debate with
00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 Hanunistic Jews,
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 but they try to kill him.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 And then I feel a chapter later
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 in Acts 13,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 in verse 6,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:30 it says,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 in pathos,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 faced with opposition
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 from false prophets and sorcerers.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 And in the same chapter later on,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 when he went to Poseidon's Antioch,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 the Jews were filled with jealousy
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 of their popularity
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 and began to contradict
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 what Paul was saying
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 and heaps abuse on him.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 The Jewish leaders incited
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 the God-feeling women of high standing
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 and the leading men of the city.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 They stirred up persecution
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 against Paul and Barnabas
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 and expelled them from the region.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:08 We go on in the next chapter,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:09 in Iconium,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 was a plot afoot
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 among both Gentiles and Jews,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 together with the leaders
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 to mistreat them
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 and stone them.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 And later in the same chapter
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 in verse 19,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:23 in Nesra,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 some Jews came from Antioch
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 and Iconium
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 and went to crowd over.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 They stoned Paul
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 and dragged him outside the city,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 thinking he was dead.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:33 Next chapter,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 Paul and Jew,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 a very sharp disagreement
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 with the person
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 that was his mentor
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 and companion
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 and they parted the company.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 A couple of chapters later
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 in chapter 17,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 in Thessalonica,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 some of the Jews
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 were pursued
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 and joined
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 Paul and Silas
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 as did a large number
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 of God-feeling Greeks
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 and quite a few prominent women.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 But other Jews were jealous
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 so they ran off
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 some bad character
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 from the marketplace,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 formed a mob
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 and started a riot
00:06:07 --> 00:06:07 in the city.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 Then later on,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:11 when the Jews
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 in Thessalonica
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 learned that Paul
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 was preaching
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 the word of God
00:06:15 --> 00:06:15 in Berea,
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 some of them
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 went there too,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 agitating the crowds
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 and stirring them up.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:24 And then,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 the next chapter
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 in Corinth,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:27 where this,
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 what we're looking at today,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 the Jews
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 made a united attack
00:06:32 --> 00:06:32 on Paul
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 and brought him
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 to a place of judgment.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 And next chapter,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:37 the silversmith
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 of Ephesus' idol
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 brought the whole city
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 into an uproar
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 against Paul.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 From Paul
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 become a Christian
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 in chapter 9
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 to chapter 19,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 it's roughly about
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 20 years
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 have passed.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 as at chapter 19
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 is where Paul
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 written the letter
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 that we've seen today.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 With all this
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 happening to Paul,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:06 Paul keep on going,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 telling people
00:07:08 --> 00:07:08 about Jesus,
00:07:10 --> 00:07:10 keep on being
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 an authentic follower
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 of Christ.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 So I'd like to look
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 at three areas
00:07:15 --> 00:07:15 to find out
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 why he can say,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 what he said today
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 in chapter 12
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 of 2 Corinthians.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 The three areas
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 that we look at
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 is not what you know,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 but who you know.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 How are your do
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 or say,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 tell about you,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 and what are you
00:07:36 --> 00:07:36 feeling now?
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 Paul has shared
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 something very intimate
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 in chapter 12
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 of 2 Corinthians.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 In a way,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:46 it also seems
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 very strange.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 Let's read it again
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 from verse 1.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 2 Corinthians 1.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 I must go on
00:07:56 --> 00:07:56 boasting,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 although there is
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 nothing to be gained.
00:07:59 --> 00:07:59 I will go on
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 to visions
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 and revelations
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 from the Lord.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 I know a man
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 in Christ
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 who 14 years ago
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 was called up
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 to the third heaven.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:10 Whether he was
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 in the body
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 or out of the body,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 I do not know.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 God knows.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 I know that this man,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 whether in the body
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 or out of the body,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 I don't know,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 but God knows,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 was caught up
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 to paradise
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 and heard
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 inexpressible things,
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 things that no one
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 is permitted to tell.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 I will boast
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 about a man like that,
00:08:32 --> 00:08:32 but I will not boast
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 about myself
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 except about
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 my weaknesses.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 Paul,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:38 in this passage,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:39 seems to be talking
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 about himself,
00:08:40 --> 00:08:43 but in a third-person way.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 He kept this supernatural
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 experience and knowledge
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 for about 14 years
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 without telling anyone.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 I think for a lot of us,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 it's so natural for us
00:08:55 --> 00:08:55 to be drawn
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 to all things
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 that are mysterious.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 It gives us a sense
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 of adrenaline rush,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 like watching horror movies.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:07 We have a very strong
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 curiosity towards
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 things unknown
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 or not permitted,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 especially
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 when we are much younger,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 when our sense of fear
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 and self-protection
00:09:17 --> 00:09:17 or preservation
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 were much weaker.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 Have you ever wondered why?
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 From my observation,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 it has a lot to do
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 with trying to prove
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 that we are capable
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 to be independent.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 We believe
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 once we master
00:09:34 --> 00:09:34 the unknown,
00:09:35 --> 00:09:35 we somehow can
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 master life better.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 We are well on our way
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 to master our own life,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 which means
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 your life will get somewhere.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 And when we think
00:09:47 --> 00:09:47 we got it,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 like most kids,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 when they master
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 a new skill,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 what would they do naturally?
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 They would say,
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 look at me,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 look at me.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 We like to show
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 what we know
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 or can do.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 But Paul
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 held back
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 for 14 years
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 because even though
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 what he knows
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 and experiences
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 is so great,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 that's not
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 the things
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 that he's chasing after
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 or wanted to boast about.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 It's who he knows
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 that he values
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 and treasure
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 and want to tell people about.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 in chapter 12,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:27 verse 1,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 Paul says,
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 those visions
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 and revelations
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 are from the Lord.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 And repeating
00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 the fact that
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 he does not know
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 it was
00:10:35 --> 00:10:38 in the body
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 or apart
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 from the body
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 experience,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 seems to point
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 to the fact
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 that they have
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 great experience,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 but they are not
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 originated from him.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 There are things
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 outside of him
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 beyond his control,
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 so it's not something
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 that he can plan
00:10:56 --> 00:10:56 to master
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 or trace after.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 Paul said
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 in 2 Corinthians 11,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 31,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 which is the chapter
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 before that,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 that the God
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 and Father
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 of the Lord Jesus
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 knows what he is doing.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 And twice
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 in our passage,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 we say,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 only God knows
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 what is going on
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 with him.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 He seems very confident
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 that God knows him
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 and he puts himself
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 as a man
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 he knows
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 in Christ.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 Where does he get
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 that sort of confidence?
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 I think he most likely
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 gets it from Jesus
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 because it was exactly
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 what Jesus prayed
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 for his followers
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 in John 17, 26.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 Jesus said to God,
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 I have made you
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 known to them
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 and will continue
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 to make you known
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 in order
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 that the love
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 you have for me
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 may be in them
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 and that I myself
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 may be in them.
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 Paul is confident
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 that God knows him
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 because Jesus
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 is his mediator,
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 because Paul
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 is in Christ
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 and he knows Christ.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 I don't think
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 I need to say
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 much about
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 the value
00:12:09 --> 00:12:09 of knowing
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 the right person.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 You'll find out
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 if you ever go
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 to Chayam Cha.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 I always like
00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 to go to

00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 because we get
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 a table straight away.

00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 because this person
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 is known
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 by all the captains,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 all the waiters
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 and waitress
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 in the whole restaurant.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:31 When it comes
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 to understanding
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 about Christianity,
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 it's important
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 to ask the right question,
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 not to get distracted
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 to chase after
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 some super spiritual
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 experience.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:43 Our focus
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 in understanding
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 the Bible
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 is to know
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 who we should believe
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 and to be known
00:12:49 --> 00:12:49 by him.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 In 1131,
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 it says,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:56 God and Father
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 of the Lord Jesus

00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 What does this verse
