00:00:08 --> 00:00:10 and we would boast of our sexual exploits with women.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:14 I was into philosophy
00:00:14 --> 00:00:19 and was actively involved in a sect for nine years.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 I began an affair with a young woman
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 and she was my lover for 13 years
00:00:27 --> 00:00:30 and she gave birth to our son.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:36 I came to Christ, I ditched my lover
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 and I am famous for my prayer,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 grant me chastity and continence but not yet.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:45 Who am I?
00:00:53 --> 00:00:55 There was a certain ambiguity, that's right.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:00 But let me tell you that sects and philosophy did not do it for me
00:01:00 --> 00:01:04 and one day I threw myself down under a fig tree
00:01:04 --> 00:01:07 and I cried my eyes out and I repeatedly said to the Lord,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:12 how long, O Lord, how long, Lord, will you be angry to the uttermost?
00:01:14 --> 00:01:16 Do not be mindful of my old sins
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 for I felt my past have a grip on me
00:01:19 --> 00:01:23 and it uttered wretched cries,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 how long, how long is it to be?
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 Tomorrow, tomorrow, why not now?
00:01:28 --> 00:01:32 Why not put an end to my impure life in this very hour?
00:01:34 --> 00:01:35 Who am I?
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 And as I was saying this
00:01:41 --> 00:01:43 and weeping in the bitter agony of my heart,
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 suddenly I heard a voice from a nearby house
00:01:47 --> 00:01:50 chanting as if it might be a boy or a girl
00:01:50 --> 00:01:52 saying and repeating over and over again,
00:01:53 --> 00:01:56 pick up and read, pick up and read.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 And I hurried to the place where I'd put down the book
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 and I seized it and I opened it
00:02:03 --> 00:02:07 and in silence I read the first passage on which my eyes lit
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 and it said,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 not in riots and drunken parties,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:16 not in eroticism and indecencies,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 not in strife and rivalry,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 but put on the Lord Jesus Christ
00:02:23 --> 00:02:27 and make no provision for the flesh in its lusts.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 Romans 13.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 And I neither wished nor heeded to read further at once
00:02:35 --> 00:02:39 with the last words of this sentence,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 it was as if a light of relief
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 from all anxiety flooded into my heart
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 and all the shadows of doubt were dispelled.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 Who am I?
00:02:54 --> 00:02:55 And if you are here this morning,
00:02:55 --> 00:02:57 you can help us with the answer.

00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 Look at that, they're trying to be very quiet down the front.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:02 You did a great job.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 Augustine.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 Bishop of Hippo in North Africa
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 which is in the country of Algeria these days
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 and it was written,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 God spoke a life-changing message,
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 a life-changing word to Augustine
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 in 387 AD
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 out of Paul's letter to the Romans.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 And so as we come to Romans,
00:03:32 --> 00:03:33 we are coming to a book
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 where God has given us a message
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 with the power to transform people.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 Now we're going to spend a few weeks sampling Romans,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 we're not trying to cover the lot,
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 we're just dipping our toe in,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 we're spending a fair bit of time in chapter one
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 and then we're going to bounce to three other chapters on the way.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 In places it is a really difficult book,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 it's a wonderful book,
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 it's the most complete explanation
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 of the Christian faith in the Bible,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:07 it deals with sin and justification and righteousness
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 and God's sovereign purposes for his,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 God's sovereign choices,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 his justice,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 God's eternal purposes for his people,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:17 the place of the Jews and the nations
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 and how they should relate,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 how they might live with one another in Christ.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:25 If you go back across church history,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 you actually see that there's a whole series
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 of really famous Christians
00:04:30 --> 00:04:32 that have been converted
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 by encountering the words of this book.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:36 So people like Augustine
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 and Martin Luther in the Reformation
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 and George Whitefield
00:04:40 --> 00:04:43 in some of the revivals
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 that happened in England
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 and the United States
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 and John Wesley who wrote hymns
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 and was a great preacher,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 they all credit the letter to the Romans
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 with their conversion
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 and their establishment in Christ.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 I can tell you
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 that when I came to Christ in 1977,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 I joined a Bible study group
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 which I'd never been part of before,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 never knew what they were
00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 and our leader took us
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 through Luke's Gospel that first year
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 and I think in a way
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 grounded me in the faith
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 but the place where he went the second year,
00:05:11 --> 00:05:13 he took us verse by verse,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 passage by passage
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 through the book of Romans
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 and it was just a life-changing
00:05:17 --> 00:05:20 eye-opening place to come to
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 in terms of being established in Christ
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 and established in the Scriptures.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 I'd really like you to have it open,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 so if you've got Bibles with you tonight,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 have it open at Romans chapter 1.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 And it begins,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 called to be an apostle,
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 set apart for the gospel of God
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 and then in verse 7,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 to all those in Rome
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 who are loved by God
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 and called to be saints,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 grace to you
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 and peace from God our Father
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 and the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 So you see that Paul is a letter
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 and its author is the apostle Paul.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 If you jump to the very end of Romans
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 to chapter 16 verse 22
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 and don't go there,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:08 it says,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 I, Tertius,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 who wrote this letter,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 greet you in the Lord.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 And so the words of the letter
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 are the apostle Paul's,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 but they are written down
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 by a scribe by the name of Tertius.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 It's a letter which is written
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 to believers in Rome
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 and he describes them
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 as everybody who is loved by God
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 and who is called to be holy.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 It's a grand letter.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 It's about God's really big picture purposes
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 in Christ.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 And it begins again.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:45 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 called to be an apostle,
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 set apart for the gospel of God,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 which he promised beforehand
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 through his prophets
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 in the Holy Scriptures,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 concerning his son,
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 who was descended from David
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 according to the flesh
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 and was declared to be
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 the son of God in power
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 according to the spirit of holiness
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 by his resurrection from the dead.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 Jesus Christ, our Lord.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 So God's message is a person,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 Jesus Christ.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 And Paul is not politically correct.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 He just comes straight out
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 and unashamedly says,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 I am a slave of Jesus Christ.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 I think every one of your English translations
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 says a servant of Jesus Christ,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 but it actually says,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 I'm a slave of Jesus Christ.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 I'm not ashamed to be a slave of Jesus Christ.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 I have been called into his servants.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 I have been given a mission.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 My life has become one
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 of total obligation to Christ.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:48 I was transformed in a moment
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 on the Damascus road
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 when the Lord Jesus confronted me
00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 about my hatred of the Lord
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 and my hatred of his people.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 And I have come to know
00:07:57 --> 00:08:00 and to treasure the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:05 And he tells the story about his coming,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:06 not here,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 but in numbers of places
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 in the New Testament.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 And in Acts 26,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 he says it in a very short way.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 He says,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 he tells the story again,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 he says,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 I said when I heard the voice,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 who are you, Lord?
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 And the Lord said,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:26 But rise and stand upon your feet
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 for I have appeared to you
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 for this very purpose,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 to appoint you as a servant
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 and witness to the things
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 in which you have seen me
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 and to those things
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 in which I will appear to you,
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 delivering you from your people
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 and from the Gentiles
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 to whom I am sending you,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 the nations to whom I am sending you.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:52 He has been brought
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 from darkness to light.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 The Lord Jesus has saved him
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 for a purpose.
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 He has commissioned him
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 for a task.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 He's an apostle.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 It means a sent one.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 He's been sent by Jesus
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 and God has sent him
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 to the nations
00:09:06 --> 00:09:09 with his momentous announcement
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 about the Lord Jesus Christ,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 God's great news.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:16 And in verse 2,
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 it says about this message,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 it says,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 this is a message
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 which God promised beforehand
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 through his prophets
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 in the Holy Scriptures
00:09:24 --> 00:09:27 concerning his son
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 who was descended from David
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 according to the flesh
00:09:31 --> 00:09:34 and was declared to be
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 the son of God in power
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 according to the spirit of holiness
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 by his resurrection from the dead,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 Jesus Christ our Lord.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 Now it's a mouthful
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 and it's earful
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 and this is harder work
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 than some of the passages
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 we come to sometimes.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:53 But it's a much anticipated message.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 He's saying to us,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 this is a message
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 about God's king
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 which was promised
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 in the Old Testament.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 The prophets were looking forward
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 to the day
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 when God's king
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 would be revealed.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 And this king was born
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 into a human family.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 He was born
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 into Joseph and Mary's family.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 And his human ancestry
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 goes back
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 to King David.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 But he says more than that,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 he's not just got human ancestry,
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 he's got divine ancestry.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 It was proved
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 when the spirit of God
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 raised him from the dead.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 And so you hear
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 and you read in this passage
00:10:36 --> 00:10:36 that Father,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 Son and Holy Spirit
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 are all working together.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 God's gospel
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 is about the Father's Son
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 who became flesh
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 and died
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 and was raised from the dead
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 by the power of God's Spirit.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 So,
00:10:52 --> 00:10:58 this is not
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 impersonal theology.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 This is not
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 dry and dusty stuff.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 It's not an academic exercise.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 It's not like
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 bringing Jesus down
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and putting him in the slab
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 and the morgue
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 and pulling him into bits
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 and saying,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 oh, that's interesting.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 He's got vessels
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 and a heart
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 and kidneys
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 and a brain
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 and
00:11:17 --> 00:11:20 this is very personal.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 Paul refers
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 very personally
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 to Jesus Christ
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 our Lord.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 He's somebody
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 that he knew
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 and he writes
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 to people
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 who know him
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 personally as well.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 I think it's
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 one of the great evidences
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 of true Christian faith
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 in somebody's life.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 You know,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 to be able to call Jesus
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 my Lord
00:11:48 --> 00:11:53 was a huge change
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 for me
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 when I came to Christ
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 because for the first time
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 my prayers changed
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 from being
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 dear God
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 to dear
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 Lord Jesus.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 I knew him
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 and I began
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 to understand
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 how important
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 he is
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 and I saw
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 that Christian faith
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 is personal
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 and it's relationship
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 it's not religion
00:12:19 --> 00:12:21 and Jesus
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 is not somebody
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 that we know about
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 and we recite
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 facts about
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 he is somebody
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 that we know
00:12:28 --> 00:12:31 he is not just
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 God who is out there
00:12:32 --> 00:12:32 he's God
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 in here.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 So Romans
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 is a letter
00:12:39 --> 00:12:39 which is written
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 to Christians
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 who know a person
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 their Lord
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 Jesus Christ
00:12:43 --> 00:12:47 but there are also
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 clues here
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 to the big picture
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 purpose of this letter
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 and it's verse 5
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 it says
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 through whom
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 we have received
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 grace and apostleship
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 to bring about
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 the obedience
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 of faith
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 for the sake
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 of his name
00:13:01 --> 00:13:01 among all the nations
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 including you
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 who are called
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 to belong
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 to Jesus Christ.
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 So Paul's been given
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 this apostolic mission
00:13:09 --> 00:13:09 for a purpose
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 it's God's purpose
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 it's not his purpose
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 and the purpose
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 expressed here
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 is to bring about
00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 the obedience
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 of faith
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 for the sake
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 of his name
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 God's name
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 among all the nations.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 It's an interesting
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 expression
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 it's a strange expression
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 it's only used
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 in one other place
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 in the New Testament
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 and that's in Romans
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 chapter 16
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 verse 26
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 and right at the end
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 of Romans
00:13:33 --> 00:13:33 it says
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 but this has now
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 been disclosed
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 and through the prophetic
00:13:36 --> 00:13:36 writings
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 has been made known
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 to all nations
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 according to the command
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 of the eternal God
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 to bring about
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 the obedience
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 of faith.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 So the letter
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 begins with the expression
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 it ends with the expression
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 and you could say
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 in marketing terms
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 and I think it's a pretty
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 crass way to speak
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 about the scriptures
00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 but in marketing terms
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 God's gospel
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 is results orientated.
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 God has a purpose
00:14:01 --> 00:14:04 and his purpose
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 is to bring men
00:14:05 --> 00:14:05 and women
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 and boys
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 and girls
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 to himself
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 we are brought
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 to the obedience
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 of faith.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:15 To come to Christ
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 is to be brought
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 to the obedience
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 of faith.
