00:00:08 --> 00:00:15 and delivered what is regarded as one of the top five speeches of the 20th century and certainly
00:00:15 --> 00:00:22 for the English speaking world. He said, I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and
00:00:22 --> 00:00:29 live out the true meaning of its creed that we hold these truths to be self-evident that all
00:00:29 --> 00:00:36 men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former
00:00:36 --> 00:00:41 slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of
00:00:41 --> 00:00:47 brotherhood. I have a dream that one day, even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the
00:00:47 --> 00:00:54 heat of injustice and sweltering with the heat of oppression will be transformed into an oasis of
00:00:54 --> 00:00:59 freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children one day live in a nation that
00:00:59 --> 00:01:06 will not judge them by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream
00:01:06 --> 00:01:16 today. He articulated and symbolized a great dream, a vision of racial harmony and social justice and
00:01:16 --> 00:01:21 peace and unity, a vision that he himself unfortunately did not see to materialize.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:30 It is, however, a dream that I would suggest aligns with God's purposes for his world and for all people.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:38 I believe it's a dream that must start with Christians embracing the Lord Jesus. It must start with the
00:01:38 --> 00:01:45 local church and it must start here at St. Paul's Chatswood. Our vision, as I launched last week,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:51 we're in a vision series and launched last week a new vision for us and our vision is to be united
00:01:51 --> 00:01:56 in our desperation for the world around us to encounter Jesus and in our desire to represent
00:01:56 --> 00:02:02 the diversity of Chatswood. I talked a lot last week about unity. This week, I want to focus on
00:02:02 --> 00:02:10 the idea of diversity for us as a church. Our vision is to be united in our desire to represent
00:02:10 --> 00:02:18 the diversity of Chatswood. God's vision, as we just heard from God's word, is a vision for all
00:02:18 --> 00:02:24 people. The vision that we're looking, working our way through in the course of these four weeks of
00:02:24 --> 00:02:32 vision series is far greater than Martin Luther King's vision of a racial harmony of the United
00:02:32 --> 00:02:37 States or even beyond the United States. Our vision is intimately connected to God's vision
00:02:37 --> 00:02:43 of all things. The biblical vision, let me say what I intend on doing in this next little while
00:02:43 --> 00:02:49 is to preach the Bible to you. So we're going to begin Genesis chapter one and see God's vision
00:02:49 --> 00:02:55 unfold really, really quickly. The biblical vision starts beginning of the Bible in Genesis one,
00:02:56 --> 00:03:01 where God creates all things. He creates all people, two of them at this point, in his image.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:07 In his image. And every person who's ever walked the face of the earth from that moment
00:03:07 --> 00:03:15 carries the image of God. There is solidarity for all people. We all are created equal.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:21 It's not just a constitutional thing for the United States. All people are created equal. But as
00:03:21 --> 00:03:27 we have solidarity in image, so we also have solidarity in our sin. In Genesis chapter three,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:31 Adam and Eve reject God's rule over their life. And every human being who's walked the face of the
00:03:31 --> 00:03:39 earth since that has followed in their footsteps. And we, from the point of conception, are flawed.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:50 Our image of God is marred by sin. We have all sinned and we fall short of God's purposes for our lives.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:57 Romans chapter three. And one of the big consequences of that is God's judgment upon all people. And you see it
00:03:57 --> 00:04:07 played out in terms of the nations in Genesis chapter 11, where he scatters people. He confuses their
00:04:07 --> 00:04:12 language so that they would not work together in order to dethrone him as the Lord of all.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:19 And yet God doesn't just act in judgment. He doesn't leave us in that place because
00:04:19 --> 00:04:25 he sets about a plan to reverse it all in Genesis chapter 12, the beginning there, verses one to
00:04:25 --> 00:04:31 three. But Genesis 12 is the hinge point of the Bible. It's the turning point of scripture. It's the
00:04:31 --> 00:04:38 beginning of God's plan of redemption that began with a promise to a bloke named Abram, that all peoples
00:04:38 --> 00:04:46 of the earth will be blessed through him. And God's call of Abraham here is a direct response
00:04:46 --> 00:04:55 to the disastrous human situation of Genesis 3 to 11. God's focus is on Abraham and it's not
00:04:55 --> 00:05:07 an exclusive focus, but to use this individual, an unimpressive individual, and his descendants to
00:05:07 --> 00:05:15 bless and deliver the entire human race. And that means that God's solution to our sin
00:05:15 --> 00:05:25 reaches its final goal when it includes all peoples, all nations of the earth.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:35 The purpose of God choosing Israel was to witness to the universal power and love and magnificence
00:05:35 --> 00:05:42 of God for all people. God's plan for all the nations is amazing in its scope and its vision.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:49 And that's what you see right through the rest of the Bible, including the Old Testament, which
00:05:49 --> 00:05:59 appears to be so centered on the people of Israel. Psalm 67, the nations will benefit from the Abrahamic
00:05:59 --> 00:06:10 blessing of Israel. The nations will come to worship the living God in Psalm 22, 86, 102, 138, 145, Isaiah 2, 12, 42, 45.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:18 The nations will be included within Israel as the standard people of God, as God's purposes are worked out,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:22 as such a way that they'll be registered in God's holy city in Psalm 87.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:29 They'll be blessed with God's salvation in Isaiah 19. They'll be accepted into God's house in Isaiah 56.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:35 They'll be called by God's name in Amos 9. They'll be joined with God's people in Zechariah 2.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:44 Just to name a few. It is absolutely essential for us to see that God is not a racist in any way whatsoever.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:59 He doesn't have favorites. The choosing of Israel was not for ethnocentric purposes. It was for universal redemption.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:09 But Israel failed consistently in living out that purpose. They consistently displayed sinful prejudice,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:16 apathy, racial pride. They consistently forgot the reason God chose them.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:21 And God's plan of redemption, which started with the promise to Abraham,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:29 was not thwarted in any way, but it continued on and finds its fulfillment in the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:35 You see, with the arrival of the Lord Jesus, you see this very early on in the Gospels,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:42 was a radically new way of defining what it meant to be part of the people of God,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:45 start to be expressed with clarity from the person of Jesus.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 And it wasn't ethnically defined.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 It was defined by faith in the Lord Jesus.
00:07:54 --> 00:08:02 You see, with Abraham, God set in motion a plan of redemption that overtones every curse
00:08:02 --> 00:08:05 for everyone who receives the blessing of Abraham.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:10 And that blessing is the forgiveness of sins, acceptance by God,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 that comes through Jesus Christ, the descendant of Abraham.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 Galatians 3, 13 and 14 says it,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:21 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 For it is written,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:25 Cursed is anyone who is hung on a tree.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:31 That is, what it's saying there is that Jesus redeemed all people by his death on the cross.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:35 He redeemed us in order that the blessing that was given to Abraham
00:08:35 --> 00:08:39 might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 It's for all people.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:47 God's redemptive plan has always been to save and to bless peoples from all peoples of the earth
00:08:47 --> 00:08:53 and to unite them together with him as his people through the Lord Jesus.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 It is the center of the Christian message.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 We refer to it as the Gospel, the good news about Jesus.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 It's redemption with our Creator God,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 being redeemed, united with him,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 and united with all people.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 Galatians 2 refers to the Gospel as justification by faith.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:17 Justification is what a judge does in a courtroom.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:25 It's the declaration that a defendant is innocent because they are in fact innocent.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 They are truly innocent.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:35 How does God declare rebellious humans to no longer be rebellious?
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 When they've been rebellious?
00:09:37 --> 00:09:40 Not by just going,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 Oh, let's just love everyone and forget about it.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 No, by judging it.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 By dealing with it.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:53 By giving it the right condemnation.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:59 Someone has to jump in to be the substitute.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:02 Someone has to take the place of the guilty,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:05 to suffer the just punishment for the guilty.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 And as we saw last week, that was Jesus.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:11 Jesus Christ lived and died to bear our punishment
00:10:11 --> 00:10:14 and provide for us a right standing before God.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:18 Justification by faith puts all people on a level playing ground.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:21 That's what justification by faith does.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:24 It's a level playing ground for all people.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:30 We are all utterly dependent upon God's grace to us in the Lord Jesus.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 No one is different.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 And justification smashes pride.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 It's why we have a core value written on the wall just out there called humble authenticity.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 The Gospel smashes pride.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:51 Justification by faith is at the center of the Christian faith
00:10:51 --> 00:10:56 and many new and sweet and tender and deep and strong
00:10:56 --> 00:10:59 and beautiful and noble and humble and kind
00:10:59 --> 00:11:02 and wise and patient and caring
00:11:02 --> 00:11:06 and serving attitudes and behaviors that flow directly from that.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:10 And one of which is the breaking down of the hostile barriers
00:11:10 --> 00:11:13 and suspicion that gets built up between people
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 who are different than us.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 It breaks the barriers
00:11:19 --> 00:11:22 builds us together as one new humanity
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 and that's how Galatians 3 puts it
00:11:25 --> 00:11:29 you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 for all of you
00:11:31 --> 00:11:33 who were baptized into Christ
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 have clothed yourselves with Christ
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 there is neither Jew nor Greek
00:11:37 --> 00:11:40 slave nor free
00:11:40 --> 00:11:43 male nor female
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 male nor female
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 male nor female
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 male nor female
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 if you belong to Christ
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 then you are Abraham's seed
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 and heirs according to the promise of Abraham
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 back in Genesis 12.
00:11:56 --> 00:12:00 When Paul states here that there's neither Jew nor Greek
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 slave nor free
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 male nor free
00:12:02 --> 00:12:02 male
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 what he does here is he
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 he strikes at the heart
00:12:05 --> 00:12:08 of three of the major barrier forming divisions
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 in human society
00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 and certainly was the case in the first century
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 ethnicity
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 economic status
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 and sexuality
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 there was a Jewish prayer
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 that was prayed
00:12:20 --> 00:12:22 in the first century
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 that went like this
00:12:23 --> 00:12:26 and it's a prayer of thanksgiving
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 blessed be he
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 that he did not make me a Gentile
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 blessed be he
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 that he did not make me a slave
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 or an ignorant peasant
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 blessed be he
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 that did not make me a woman
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 now I'm assuming
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 that that was only ever prayed
00:12:42 --> 00:12:42 in the
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 men's breakfast
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 at the temple
00:12:45 --> 00:12:48 the bacon free men's breakfast
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 just egg rolls
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 that's all it is
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 just egg rolls
00:12:50 --> 00:12:54 and what the Christian gospel does
00:12:54 --> 00:12:56 is it smashes those barriers
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 and forms a radical new society
00:12:58 --> 00:13:01 the old divisions are abolished
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 the new community is formed
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 and you see just after Jesus' resurrection
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 in Acts chapter 2
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 on the day of Pentecost
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 the Holy Spirit comes
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 the church is formed
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 and people of different races
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 and generations
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 and languages are there
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 and the coming of the Holy Spirit
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 is a symbolic reversal
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 of the judgment of
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 Genesis 11
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 with the Tower of Babel
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 where God scatters
00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 and confuses their language
00:13:23 --> 00:13:27 people who were once scattered
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 and frustrated
00:13:27 --> 00:13:29 are gathered together under Jesus
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 and even language on that day
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 is not a barrier
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 as people hear
00:13:33 --> 00:13:37 hear God's plan of redemption
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 in the Lord Jesus
00:13:38 --> 00:13:41 in their own tongue
00:13:41 --> 00:13:47 the blood of Jesus unites all people
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 and what is symbolic
00:13:49 --> 00:13:52 in Acts chapter 2
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 is a reality of the final picture
00:13:55 --> 00:13:55 of all things
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 final picture of all things
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 in history in Revelation
00:13:58 --> 00:14:01 as we just saw in Revelation 5
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 in verse 9
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 John tells us
00:14:04 --> 00:14:04 why Jesus is worthy
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 to open the book
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 at the end of history
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 so that things unfold
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 according to the plan of God
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 Jesus is worthy

00:16:27 --> 00:16:27 this is what
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 diversity is about
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 this is what
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 language is about
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 this is what
00:16:31 --> 00:16:31 St. Paul's
00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 is about
00:16:33 --> 00:16:35 this is what
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 my life is about
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 this is what
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 your life is about
00:16:37 --> 00:16:39 and so it is
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 inconceivable
00:16:40 --> 00:16:44 that we should believe that the goal of God in history
00:16:44 --> 00:16:47 and the aim of the death of his son
00:16:47 --> 00:16:49 is to gather all people
00:16:49 --> 00:16:54 and for us not to care
00:16:54 --> 00:16:58 about breaking down the barriers now in this city
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 and this church
00:16:59 --> 00:17:03 between you and other people and me and other people.
00:17:05 --> 00:17:07 The Christian gospel is the power of God
00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 that breaks down the dividing wall of hostility
00:17:09 --> 00:17:11 between Israelis and Palestinians
00:17:11 --> 00:17:14 and Russians and Poles and Nazis and Jews
00:17:14 --> 00:17:18 and white and black and male and female
00:17:18 --> 00:17:20 and old people and young
00:17:20 --> 00:17:23 and whatever other divisions are in there.
00:17:24 --> 00:17:29 When our Redeemer and Great Reconcile and his gospel
00:17:29 --> 00:17:32 are what we hold as first importance
00:17:32 --> 00:17:36 which is what 1 Corinthians 15.3 says it is
00:17:36 --> 00:17:41 we are empowered to listen to those different perspectives and preferences
00:17:41 --> 00:17:44 evaluate fairly to change as we need
00:17:44 --> 00:17:47 and be proactive in reaching across those lines
00:17:47 --> 00:17:52 that have traditionally caused divisions amongst us.
00:17:52 --> 00:17:54 when Jesus is our greatest treasure
00:17:54 --> 00:17:57 we see that our lifelong preferences
00:17:57 --> 00:17:59 our lifelong treasures

00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 God's vision
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 of all things
00:19:49 --> 00:19:52 I said last week
00:19:52 --> 00:19:52 it was control
00:19:52 --> 00:19:55 and it's not all negative
00:19:55 --> 00:19:57 it's a positive thing

00:20:19 --> 00:20:22 is that your biggest emotion

00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 of worry
00:20:24 --> 00:20:25 when your idol
00:20:25 --> 00:20:27 is fed
00:20:27 --> 00:20:28 inflamed
00:20:28 --> 00:20:30 and pumping in your heart
00:20:30 --> 00:20:30 worry
00:20:30 --> 00:20:31 will be the thing
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 that I'll be
00:20:32 --> 00:20:33 my greatest
00:20:33 --> 00:20:34 troubling emotion

00:20:37 --> 00:20:39 what will people
00:20:39 --> 00:20:39 around me feel
