00:00:16 --> 00:00:21 You're the one who declares that you form the light and you create darkness.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:27 You're the one who brings prosperity and you're the one who creates disaster.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:30 You, O God, do all of these things.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:38 Your word to us, Lord, is that you are the one whom we are to flee in your wrath,
00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 but you are also the one to whom we are to flee too.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:51 You are both the one who brings disaster and you are the refuge.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:59 You are the one who causes the anguish and yet you are the one who provides the mercy.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:09 Lord, you are more complex than any God that we could possibly formulate in our own minds,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 offensive even to our own hearts.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:18 And so as we come to your word, give us hearts that are tender to you,
00:01:19 --> 00:01:26 that lay aside idolatry, false views of you,
00:01:26 --> 00:01:31 and that we would see you as you are in this world as it is.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:37 Particularly, Lord, we would pray that you would help us to see our sin
00:01:37 --> 00:01:41 and Jesus Christ in the gospel as the resolution to that sin.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 And we ask that you would work in our hearts today as we open your word.

00:01:50 --> 00:01:57 Friends, we have just marked the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States
00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 on September 11, 2001.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:05 Do you remember where you were when you first heard that news?
00:02:07 --> 00:02:11 Do you remember how many people died on that day?
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 Something like 3 people.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 Most of them were in the World Trade Centers in New York City.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 As a shock as that was, and it's still marked into our memories,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:31 is sadly one of just a small event, really,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:39 in what some people have called the conveyor belt of corpses of human history,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 of depravity and atrocities.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 World War II, for instance,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:51 resulted in the death of between 70 and 85 million people,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:53 the majority of whom were civilians.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:59 Tens of millions of people died due to genocides,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:03 disease, starvation in those five years.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:09 The Holocaust in Germany alone caused the death of 11 million Jews
00:03:09 --> 00:03:13 between 1933 and 1945.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 One and a half million Armenians died at the hands of the Turks
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 between 1915 and 1923,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:25 as well as a further 750 Assyrians
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 and one million Greeks at the same time.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 Three million casualties
00:03:31 --> 00:03:36 as a result of the Cambodian genocide.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 Another one million dead in Rwanda in 1994.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:45 The Soviet slaughter of 250 Polish people
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 in 1937 and 1938,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 another couple of hundred thousand Poles by the Ukrainians,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 less than a decade later.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:58 Between 1824 and 1908,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:04 white settlers and mounted police in Queensland
00:04:04 --> 00:04:10 murdered more than 10 Indigenous members of this country.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 Do you remember?
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 Do you remember any of that?
00:04:17 --> 00:04:18 Do you remember Stalin?
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 Idi Amin?
00:04:21 --> 00:04:21 Pol Pot?
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 Hitler?
00:04:24 --> 00:04:28 What about the 60 million lives
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 that were lost in the Mongolian massacre?
00:04:32 --> 00:04:36 Do you remember any of that?
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 What about the latest atrocity that appears on the TV?
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 How do you respond?
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 How quickly it is over
00:04:47 --> 00:04:50 as we move on to the next news event?
00:04:50 --> 00:04:57 Then there are a multitude of man-made disasters
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 like Chernobyl.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:04 Natural disasters like 250 lives lost
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 in a tsunami.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 Or four and a half million deaths to COVID-19.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:15 This world is a broken world.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 No amount of freedom days
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 and being able to stand up in pubs and drink beers
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 and holiday destinations
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 can remove that fact.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 It is a broken world.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 And we should feel it.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 We should feel the stunning reality
00:05:33 --> 00:05:39 that each one of those lives is no longer with us.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 Every time you go to a funeral,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 it should be a stunning reality
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 that this is a life lost.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 Gone.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 That merry-go-round has ended.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 Death is not good.
00:05:58 --> 00:06:01 No matter how many great stories you tell at a funeral,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 how many humorous antidotes,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 death cannot be made to look good.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:17 And eternal disaster is beyond comprehension.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:23 Over 50 million people a year
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 slip into a Christless eternity
00:06:25 --> 00:06:29 where there is no comfort.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 There is just increasing anguish.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 Lamentations is a book
00:06:37 --> 00:06:41 that's designed to help us
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 into that space,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 to feel it.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 It's designed as a memorial.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 It helps us to remember.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 It helps us to process
00:06:49 --> 00:06:53 and it helps us to go to God.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 The source of all hope
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 in times of despair.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 Now, if you've got the St. Paul's app,

00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 The lament,
00:07:05 --> 00:07:05 the comfort,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 and what does it mean to lament
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 and to be comforted as a Christian.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 And Lamentations 1,
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 it'd be great if you could open up that.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 Now, Lamentations
00:07:17 --> 00:07:21 is a collection of five poems.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 Each chapter
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 is a poem in itself.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 And four of the five chapters
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 is composed
00:07:30 --> 00:07:33 as an alphabetic acrostic,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 which means
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 that each of the poems
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 is divided
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 into 22
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 separate sections.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 You'll notice that
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 for most of the
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 Lamentations chapters,
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 they're all 22 verses,
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 except for the middle one,
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 which is 66.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 But they're all broken
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 into 22 separate sections,
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 one
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 for each letter
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 of the
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 Hebrew alphabet.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 And so if you like,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 each one,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 each verse
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 starts with the first letter of the Eve,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 and then the next section,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:10 the second letter,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 and all the way through
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 for 22 verses,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 or 22 sections.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 So Lamentations,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 if you like,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 describes
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 the suffering
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 of God's people
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 from A to Z.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 It's the
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 totality
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 of
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 human suffering.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 Also,
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 Lamentations
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 is not just
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 simply
00:08:36 --> 00:08:38 the cry
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 from the heart
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 of someone
00:08:40 --> 00:08:40 who's
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 having a tough time
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 in life right now.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:45 You know,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 this is not
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 for the person
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 who's struggled
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 with four months
00:08:52 --> 00:08:52 of lockdown
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 and they're feeling frustrated
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 and they're
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 waving their fist
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 to God.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 That's not what
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 Lamentations is.
00:08:58 --> 00:08:58 Now,
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 I don't want to minimize
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 that for you
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 if that is you.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 I just
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 want us
00:09:03 --> 00:09:03 to go
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 to a much
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 bigger picture
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 here
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 and to go
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 to a deeper
00:09:08 --> 00:09:08 tragedy
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 than four months
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 of
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 lockdown.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 Lamentations
00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 is not
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 an emotional
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 outburst.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 It is a
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 theodicy.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 It's an attempt
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 to explain
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 the ways
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 of God
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 to humanity.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 The writer
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 here is
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 doing so
00:09:35 --> 00:09:35 much more
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 than just
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 venting
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 their emotions
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 and you
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 can see
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 that
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 because it
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 is so
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 structured.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 it is
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 so clear
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 and thought
00:09:47 --> 00:09:47 through
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 in the way
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 it's put
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 together.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 This is not
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 just a
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 random
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 bunch
00:09:52 --> 00:09:52 of ideas.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 The writer
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 is seeking
00:09:57 --> 00:09:57 to gain
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 perspective
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 on
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 suffering
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 and sharing
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 that perspective
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 with others.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 lamentations.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:06 The other
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 thing we
00:10:07 --> 00:10:07 should know
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 is that
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 these five
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 poems
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 are
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 communal
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 rather
00:10:12 --> 00:10:12 than
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 personal
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 laments.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 And this
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 is what
00:10:17 --> 00:10:17 makes
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 lamentations
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 a little
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 bit different
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 than Job.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 The other
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 significance
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 between Job
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 and lamentations
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 is that Job
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 is about
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 the suffering
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 of a
00:10:27 --> 00:10:27 righteous
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 man.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 Lamentations
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 is about
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 deserved.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 suffering.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 It's about
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 deserved,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 predicted
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 desolation.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 And so
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 in a world
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 of overwhelming
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 human suffering
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 this book
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 gives voice
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 to the
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 deepest
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 agonies
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 of grief
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 with the
00:10:56 --> 00:10:56 hope
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 that there
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 is some
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 comfort
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 when we
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 cry out
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 to God
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 for mercy.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 Now
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 lamentations
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 is a
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 response
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 to the
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 events
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 that are
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 recorded
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 for us
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 in
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 2 Kings

00:12:21 --> 00:12:21 they pillaged

00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 and its
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 inhabitants.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:24 The elite
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 of society
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 were forcibly
00:12:27 --> 00:12:27 marched
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 down to
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 Babylon
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 some

00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 you see
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 for the
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 people of
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 Israel
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 losing
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 Jerusalem
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 meant
00:12:50 --> 00:12:50 losing
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 all that
00:12:52 --> 00:12:52 represented
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 them as
00:12:53 --> 00:12:53 a people.
00:12:54 --> 00:12:54 Everything.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 The
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 monarchy,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:56 the ruling
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 line of
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 David,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:58 the priests,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 the sacrifices,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 the temple,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:00 the promised
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 land themselves,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 losing the
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 land meant
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 that they
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 had lost
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 God's

00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 God's promise

00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 special relationship
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 with God
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 who made
00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 and defines
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 all things.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:15 God is
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 gone
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 for them.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:20 And so
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 this first
00:13:21 --> 00:13:21 lament
00:13:21 --> 00:13:24 is from
00:13:24 --> 00:13:24 an eyewitness
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 perspective
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 and a
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 description
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 of the
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 terrible
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 desolation.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 The poet
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 here
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 presents the
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 city of
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 Jerusalem
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 as a
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 woman

00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 deepest
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 depths of
00:13:38 --> 00:13:38 mourning
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 and pain.

00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 She calls
