00:00:02 --> 00:00:04 We thank you for gifting us in different ways
00:00:04 --> 00:00:07 and for the chance to serve one another when we gather like this.
00:00:08 --> 00:00:11 Lord, I ask right now that you would speak, that it would be your words,
00:00:11 --> 00:00:14 and that as we look at these passages in 1 Samuel,
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 that we would see you more clearly,
00:00:16 --> 00:00:18 and the result would be we would love you rightly.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:19 Amen.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:25 Sometimes perception doesn't line up with reality.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 And this can be sometimes in good ways and sometimes in bad ways.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:34 It could be that you are driving and your perception is
00:00:34 --> 00:00:37 that the gap is small enough for you to get through,
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 and reality may not be that.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:41 It could be something more personal.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 Your perception might be that you need to lose some weight
00:00:45 --> 00:00:46 to be attractive to other people,
00:00:46 --> 00:00:48 but the reality might be far from that.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:52 Perception and reality don't always line up,
00:00:52 --> 00:00:56 and that's a problem if it's true of how we see God.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 If we are following a God who's more something that we've designed
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 in our own mind, a version of God, if you like,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:06 than it is the God of the Bible,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 then we set ourselves up for a fall.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:14 In 1 Samuel, Israel has been told that judgment is coming
00:01:14 --> 00:01:16 as we work through these first four chapters,
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 and we've seen the judgment in chapter 4 that we read last week
00:01:20 --> 00:01:22 and in chapter 4.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 They've been told God's not happy,
00:01:25 --> 00:01:28 but if you get to just before the bit that Ali read out,
00:01:28 --> 00:01:29 at the end of chapter 3,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 even though they've been told judgment is coming,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:36 from where they sit, their perspective is a little bit different.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 Everything still seems to be going okay.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 They're about to lose a significant battle,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 but if you just, the day before the battle even,
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 they're living in the country they want to live in.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 Hophni and Phinehas are eating well as priests.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 They've got lots of girlfriends,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 so they're happy with how things are going.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 Everything seems fine,
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 and so they hear God, judgment's coming,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 but their perspective is,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:03 we don't actually believe you,
00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 because life's good.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 And so their perception and their reality don't line up.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 Even though God's been revealing himself to Israel
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 right throughout their history,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:16 instead of listening,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 they've kind of modelled their own version of him.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 They've come up with what they think he is like
00:02:22 --> 00:02:23 and how they think he should act,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:24 and what they've done
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 is they've made him accountable to them
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 instead of the other way around.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:31 They've kind of set what they think should be his agenda,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:34 and basically what they think God should do
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 is whatever they want and when they want it.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 So if they want protection in a battle,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:40 that's what God is required to do.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:42 If they want food or riches,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 that is what God is required to do.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 And the result, of course,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 of having that sort of a God
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 is they shout with confidence
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 when he enters the army's camp.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:53 Even having lost battle,
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 they get very, very excited.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 I remember when I was much younger,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 and I really emphasise much younger
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 because this story's a little on the embarrassing side,
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 much younger,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 I got invited to a formal with a girl that I kind of knew.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 She was a fairly attractive girl,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 but I didn't know her very well,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 and so it struck me as a little bit strange
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 that she had invited me to her formal.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 Now, the way my brain processed that was,
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 I must be a pretty attractive guy.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 Attractive girl asked me to the formal,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 I don't know her well,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:27 so she doesn't know if I'm funny or interesting
00:03:27 --> 00:03:30 or boring or arrogant, as the case was.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 So, my conclusion was,
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 I must be attractive.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 Now, what this did was
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 mean that I was very relaxed about the whole event.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 I thought, she's so into me
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 that I don't have to put any effort into this formal,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:42 I'll just rock up.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 And so, the date of the formal came around,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 and so to prepare myself,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:49 aesthetically, I went for a surf.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 And then I got out of the water
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 about 20 minutes before I had to be at her house,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:56 went past a mate's place,
00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 picked up a suit that sort of fit,
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 put a shirt on without a tie or a bow tie
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 or anything like that.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 Didn't really feel like wearing leather shoes,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 so I put my just skate shoes on,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:06 on the bottom of the suit.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 I thought, well, you know,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:08 she's into me,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 so it's not going to be an issue.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 And I arrived at the front door of her house,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 thinking she's just going to be so excited
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 that I'm here.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 She's probably feeling really privileged,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 she's probably been counting down the days,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 she's probably got a calendar on a wall
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 with crosses through it.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 And I walked in,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 and she kind of looked at me,
00:04:26 --> 00:04:26 didn't say anything,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 and walked into the next room.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 And I discovered that she had spent
00:04:30 --> 00:04:32 three hours at the hairdresser,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 had a headache because her hair
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 was a little bit too tight,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 was looking amazing
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 in a fantastic formal dress
00:04:37 --> 00:04:38 and other things.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 And actually,
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 she wasn't that into me,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 she just had a ticket,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 and the guy she'd asked couldn't go,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 and she thought,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 why not ask Sam?
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 He seems nice enough.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 The problem when we have a false perception
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 is that it leads to false confidence.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 If we have an understanding
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 of something that is incorrect,
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 we can set ourselves up for a fall.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 And in the same way,
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 Israel has this perception of God
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 that He needs them,
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 rather than the other way around.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 They've kind of figured out
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 that God is somebody
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 who is as much dependent on them
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 as a country and on their army
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 as they are a nation
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 that's dependent on Him.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 And so they set themselves up for a fall.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 And what God does in this passage
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 is really important.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 It's more than just judgment
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 on Hophni and Phinehas,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 which we looked at a couple of weeks ago.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:27 We see the true character of God
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 come out in these verses in chapter 4.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 God would rather be shamed.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 That's what's happening here.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 Even though we know otherwise,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 everybody who heard about this battle
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 would have assumed that God lost.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 It's what the Philistines thought.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 It's what the other nations around
00:05:45 --> 00:05:45 would have thought.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 God would rather be embarrassed
00:05:47 --> 00:05:51 than confirm Israel
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 in their wrong perception of Him.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 He could have won the battle
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 and everybody else would have
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 continued to think God was great,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 but he was more interested
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 in correcting Israel's wrong perception
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 because God answers to no one.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 He doesn't answer to Israel.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 He doesn't answer to you.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 He doesn't answer to me.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 And He has His own agenda.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 Just because we might think
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 we know what God wants
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 and we know when God's going to work
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 or how God's going to work,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 He has His own agenda.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 And it's been His agenda
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 since the beginning of creation
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 and it will be His agenda
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 until Jesus comes back.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 It's this.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 God wants to reveal His glory
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 and He wants to call people
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 into a relationship with Him.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 A right relationship,
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 not a relationship
00:06:36 --> 00:06:36 where we invent
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 what we think God is like,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 a relationship where we know Him
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 and we worship Him
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 and we obey Him.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 And if you're following
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 a version of God
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 that has more to do
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 with what you think
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 than it does to do
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 with what God
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 has shown Himself to be like,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 then on one level
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 you're following a false God.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 You could even say
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 you're not following any God at all.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 And the problem with that is
00:07:04 --> 00:07:07 a false God or a fake God
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 can't do anything for you.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 There's this scary
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 but amazing passage
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 in the New Testament
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 where these people
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 are really confident
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 that they've been following God.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 They talk about the miracles
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 they did in God's name.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:22 They talk about
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 all the good deeds they did
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 and at the end of the passage
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 Jesus says,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:27 get away from me,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 I never knew you.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 If you have a fake idea
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 of God
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 close enough
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 is not good enough.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 There's great confidence
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 for those who know God
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 and His power in their life.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 That's what we looked at last week.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 At the confidence we have
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 with God's presence
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 and power working through us.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 But there's only pain
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 and frustration
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 if instead of following
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 the God of Scripture
00:07:51 --> 00:07:54 you're following some sort of God
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 that you have control over,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 that you dictate to,
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 that you instruct.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:02 We need to look to the reality
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 of who God is
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 as He has revealed Himself
00:08:06 --> 00:08:09 not as we decide
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 or we make up.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 The first danger
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 when perception and reality
00:08:13 --> 00:08:13 are different
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 is that false perception
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 leads to false confidence
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 and false confidence
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 leads to disaster.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 But the second danger
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 when we have perception
00:08:23 --> 00:08:23 and reality
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 that don't line up
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 concerning God
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 is the issue
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 that the Philistines face
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 in chapter 5.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 If your vision of God
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 is not the real vision of God,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 is not true reality,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 then you will end up
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 replacing God
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 with a cheap substitute.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:40 The Philistines
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 had a vision of God
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 if you like,
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 a perception of Him
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 which assumed
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 that He had to defend Israel.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 That was their understanding
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 of how God's work.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 It's Israel's God
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 so He's bound,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:54 He's like contractually obligated
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 to win the battle for them.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 And so we know
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 they had a dodgy view of God
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 because just in the last chapter
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 they figured they could beat Him
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 just by manning up.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 So granting them
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 a little bit of grace
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 that they're not very sharp,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 they assumed
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 God's Israel
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 had to do certain things.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 They had an idea
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 of how God's worked,
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 they had an idea
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 of how their God's worked
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 and so they projected that
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 onto the God of Israel
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 and so when they win,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 for them
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 that confirms everything.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 Suddenly the God of Israel
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 Israel is pretty weak
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 because he's being beaten
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 by their God.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 That's their process
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 and so they bring
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 the ark
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 which represents God,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 they stick it in their God
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 Dagon's temple
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 almost like a trophy
00:09:34 --> 00:09:34 to show off
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 how much better
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 their God is.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 Now the problem
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 with having wrong perceptions
00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 of God
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 is that
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 when He doesn't live up
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 to those expectations
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 that we have
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 which are wrong expectations,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 then we start looking
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 somewhere else.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 for somebody
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 to meet those needs.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 But we somehow feel
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 like we've been let down
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 so we start looking
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 for something
00:09:59 --> 00:09:59 or someone else
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 that we can trust in
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 and in the end
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 we settle for something
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 less than God,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 something less powerful
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 than God,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 something that is actually
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 unable to help us.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 Now on one level
00:10:15 --> 00:10:15 I want to be sympathetic
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 to the Philistines
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 in this passage
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 because
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 our perceptions of God
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 are not very dissimilar
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 to theirs.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 When we started this series
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 in 1 Samuel
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 looking at chapter 1
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 we asked the question
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 where is God
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 when things go wrong
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 in my life?
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 That was our starting point
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 as we got into this book
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 and it resonates for us
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 because we know
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 when things are bad
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 we want to shake our fist
00:10:38 --> 00:10:38 at God
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 and say fix it.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 Say this isn't fair.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 If you're God
00:10:41 --> 00:10:41 and you're good
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 and you're powerful
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 fix this.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 When life is hard
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 we're tempted
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 to look for something else
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 to satisfy us.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 We're tempted
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 to find identity
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 in the job
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 that we have.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:54 We're tempted
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 to be fulfilled
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 in relationships
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 or in significance
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 or in money
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 or in power.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 When things aren't
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 going well
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 we sometimes think
00:11:04 --> 00:11:04 alright God
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 you failed
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 I'll find something else.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 And that is exactly
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 what Israel does.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 Things have gone wrong
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 and so the Philistines
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 assume Israel's God
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 must be even lower
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 than their God
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 Dagon.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 But look at how
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 God responds
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 in verse 1.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 After the Philistines
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 had captured
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 the Ark of God
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 they took it
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 from Ebenezer
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 to Ashdod.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 Then they carried
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 the Ark
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 into Dagon's temple
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 and set it
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 beside Dagon.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 When the people
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 of Ashdod
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 rose early
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 the next day
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 there was Dagon
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 fall on his face
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 on the ground
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 before the Ark
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 of the Lord.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 They took Dagon
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 and put him back
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 in his place.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 But the following
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 morning when they
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 rose
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 there was Dagon
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 fallen on his face
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 on the ground
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 before the Ark
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 of the Lord.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 His head and hands
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 had been broken off
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 and were lying
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 on the threshold

00:20:54 --> 00:20:55 outside this rich
00:20:55 --> 00:20:55 man's house
00:20:55 --> 00:20:57 begging for
00:20:57 --> 00:20:58 anything even the
00:20:58 --> 00:20:58 scraps from this
00:20:58 --> 00:20:59 rich man's table
00:20:59 --> 00:21:00 and to look at the

00:22:09 --> 00:22:10 is still in control
00:22:10 --> 00:22:11 he is still more
00:22:11 --> 00:22:12 powerful than
00:22:12 --> 00:22:13 whatever else anyone
00:22:13 --> 00:22:14 may put their trust
00:22:14 --> 00:22:16 in regardless of
00:22:16 --> 00:22:17 how it might look
00:22:17 --> 00:22:19 God is fulfilling
00:22:19 --> 00:22:20 his plan and
00:22:20 --> 00:22:22 purpose and even
00:22:22 --> 00:22:23 in our world which
00:22:23 --> 00:22:24 denies that God is
00:22:24 --> 00:22:26 even there God
00:22:26 --> 00:22:27 will have his way
00:22:27 --> 00:22:29 even in a world
00:22:29 --> 00:22:30 full of wrong
00:22:30 --> 00:22:31 perceptions about
00:22:31 --> 00:22:33 God eventually all
00:22:33 --> 00:22:35 will see him all
00:22:35 --> 00:22:37 will recognize him
00:22:37 --> 00:22:38 all will bow before
00:22:38 --> 00:22:39 his majesty and
00:22:39 --> 00:22:40 his holiness
00:22:40 --> 00:22:42 how do we focus on
00:22:42 --> 00:22:44 reality we beware of
00:22:44 --> 00:22:45 false victories
00:22:45 --> 00:22:48 and secondly we look
00:22:48 --> 00:22:49 to the place where
00:22:49 --> 00:22:50 God has revealed

00:22:53 --> 00:22:55 Jesus in Hebrews

00:22:58 --> 00:22:59 ancestors through the
00:22:59 --> 00:22:59 prophets at many

00:23:01 --> 00:23:02 ways but in these
00:23:02 --> 00:23:03 last days he's spoken
00:23:03 --> 00:23:04 to us by his son
00:23:04 --> 00:23:05 whom he appointed
00:23:05 --> 00:23:06 heir of all things
00:23:06 --> 00:23:07 and through whom he
00:23:07 --> 00:23:08 made the universe
00:23:08 --> 00:23:09 the sun is the
00:23:09 --> 00:23:11 radiance of God's
00:23:11 --> 00:23:12 glory and the exact
00:23:12 --> 00:23:14 representation of his
00:23:14 --> 00:23:15 being
00:23:15 --> 00:23:16 Colossians 1
00:23:16 --> 00:23:17 the sun is the
00:23:17 --> 00:23:18 image of the
00:23:18 --> 00:23:19 invisible God

00:24:09 --> 00:24:11 Satan he thought he'd
00:24:11 --> 00:24:14 won as Jesus hung
00:24:14 --> 00:24:16 there dying it looked

00:24:17 --> 00:24:20 powerless or he didn't
00:24:20 --> 00:24:24 care but beware false
00:24:24 --> 00:24:27 victory in the empty
00:24:27 --> 00:24:29 tomb God is vindicated
00:24:29 --> 00:24:32 not even death can stop
00:24:32 --> 00:24:34 God's plan not
00:24:34 --> 00:24:35 not soldiers not
00:24:35 --> 00:24:36 plotting politicians
00:24:36 --> 00:24:38 not rebellious people
00:24:38 --> 00:24:39 nothing can stop the
00:24:39 --> 00:24:40 will of God
00:24:40 --> 00:24:42 nothing can stop what
00:24:42 --> 00:24:42 he is doing and his
00:24:42 --> 00:24:44 will is that all

00:25:10 --> 00:25:11 perceptions of God

00:25:13 --> 00:25:15 who he really is the

00:25:16 --> 00:25:17 miss out on so much
00:25:17 --> 00:25:19 goodness and holiness
00:25:19 --> 00:25:24 and love and mercy if

00:25:26 --> 00:25:27 doesn't drive you to
00:25:27 --> 00:25:28 your knees in humble

00:25:33 --> 00:25:34 into the air leaping
