[00:00:00] You are listening to My Devotional, the daily devotional from Dr. Michael Youssef and Leading
[00:00:06] the Way.
[00:00:08] Praising the Name of God by Dr. Michael Youssef
[00:00:12] History books tell us of an incident in Napoleon's life.
[00:00:16] A man once approached the French emperor and said, I am very pleased to meet you.
[00:00:21] You see, my name is the same as yours.
[00:00:23] Knowing the man had a poor reputation, Napoleon was incensed and exclaimed, either
[00:00:29] live up to your name or change it.
[00:00:32] In our culture, we may not take names very seriously, but in the Middle East, a person's
[00:00:38] name is given either in honor of a beloved relative or because it has been in the family
[00:00:43] for generations.
[00:00:45] In Bible times, a name was chosen very carefully and deliberately to indicate what kind of person
[00:00:50] the child would be.
[00:00:51] A name also reflects a person's character, personality, and abilities.
[00:00:56] This is why some of the people's names in the Bible were changed.
[00:01:00] Peter's original name was Cephas, but Jesus changed it to Peter, meaning the rock.
[00:01:07] Abram was changed to Abraham, which means the father of many.
[00:01:11] From God's perspective, a new name is consistent with a new mission.
[00:01:16] God's name, however, never changes.
[00:01:19] He is Jehovah, which means the self-existent one.
[00:01:22] He is self-sufficient.
[00:01:25] He does not need anything or anyone to exist.
[00:01:28] However, he desires our worship, praise, and fellowship.
[00:01:32] He loves us with everlasting love.
[00:01:35] The more we learn about him, the more we understand his faithfulness, justice, and mercy.
[00:01:41] When we grasp the depth of God's sovereignty, we also realize his wondrous gift of grace was
[00:01:48] given with a purpose.
[00:01:49] Jesus Christ, not only do we receive salvation, but we also receive his name.
[00:01:54] We become members of his family, joint heirs with Christ.
[00:01:58] Now that is worthy of all our praise.
[00:02:02] Let's pray together.
[00:02:04] Lord, there are so many beautiful facets to your nature.
[00:02:07] Thank you for the many names that you testify of your goodness.
[00:02:12] Continue to reveal your nature to us.
[00:02:16] We pray this in the name of Jesus.
[00:02:18] Amen.
