[00:00:00] You are listening to My Devotional, the Daily Devotional from Dr. Michael Youssef and Leading
[00:00:06] The Way.
[00:00:08] The Truly Blessed Life by Dr. Michael Youssef
[00:00:13] Where should we go to find out what a true Christian is really like?
[00:00:18] Not to popular culture, but to Scripture, of course.
[00:00:22] And Scripture reveals that our heavenly blessings given to us by God make all the difference.
[00:00:28] But first, let's consider how the Apostle Paul described a non-Christian.
[00:00:33] He says,
[00:00:34] They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of
[00:00:39] the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
[00:00:44] Similar to how our hands can become calloused with repeated wear, people can become spiritually
[00:00:49] calloused toward God.
[00:00:51] They become indifferent toward Him, and eventually their hearts are hardened.
[00:00:56] Those who are spiritually dead need the power of Jesus to transform their hearts, to remove
[00:01:01] their hearts of stone and give them hearts of flesh.
[00:01:05] Next, Paul describes what a Christian looks like.
[00:01:09] He says,
[00:01:10] True Christians are those who put off old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful
[00:01:16] desires.
[00:01:18] A Christian acknowledges their rebellion against a holy God, and because they do that,
[00:01:22] God gives them a new heart, a new mind, new nature.
[00:01:26] In short, God gives them a new way of life.
[00:01:30] That's the difference.
[00:01:31] The old life is full of falsehoods, but in Christ we are called to speak the truth.
[00:01:37] The old life is full of unbridled anger.
[00:01:41] Still in the new life we experience righteous anger as our hearts break for the things
[00:01:46] that break God's heart.
[00:01:48] The old life is marked by theft.
[00:01:51] Still the new life is marked by hard work and generosity.
[00:01:56] Without Christ, unwholesome talk flows from the mouth, but in Christ our words are to
[00:02:01] be used for building others up.
[00:02:05] And finally, a spirit of bitterness is replaced with a spirit of forgiveness.
[00:02:11] The reason the church is not shaking the world today is because for many people their
[00:02:16] love for God has grown faint.
[00:02:19] Many fear man and not God.
[00:02:21] Instead of hating sin, they nurse it.
[00:02:24] They've neglected to take hold of their every spiritual blessing in Christ for their strength,
[00:02:30] encouragement, and holiness.
[00:02:32] Only when we take hold of God's precious gift will the church live up to its high
[00:02:37] calling.
[00:02:39] Let's pray together.
[00:02:40] Father, may we take hold of the new life that you've given to us.
[00:02:44] We submit to the light yoke of Christ, a calling with power and goodness.
[00:02:51] As we seek to obey, give us wisdom to see your will and to reject and repent of sin that
[00:02:57] we might serve you faithfully.
[00:02:59] We pray this.
[00:03:00] In the name of Jesus, amen.
