In Galatians 5:4, the apostle Paul uses the phrase “fallen away from grace.” Some think that when a person has “fallen from grace,” it means they have lost their salvation, but that’s not necessarily what Paul meant. In today’s devotional, Dr. Michael Youssef explains the meaning of “fallen from grace.”

[00:00:06] the Way. Fallen From Grace by Dr. Michael Youssef
[00:00:12] In Galatians 5-4, the Apostle Paul uses the phrase, fallen away from grace. Some think
[00:00:19] that when a person has fallen from grace, it means that they have lost their salvation,
[00:00:23] but that is not necessarily what Paul meant. He is issuing a warning to Christians to not
[00:00:29] enslave themselves again to the law. For it is the grace of God that saves us, it is
[00:00:35] the grace of God that sustains us, and it's the grace of God that's going to
[00:00:39] present us to the Father, holy and blameless on that day of glory. The grace of
[00:00:45] God is a complete job from beginning to end. So what does Paul mean by fallen from
[00:00:51] grace? Falling from grace occurs when you cease to believe that only God's grace can
[00:00:57] save you. You're falling away from grace when you trust in some external rule or some man-made
[00:01:03] ritual or church dogma to get you to heaven. When you add something to the grace of God
[00:01:09] to receive the favor of God, you're falling from grace. It can happen easily, so we must
[00:01:15] be on guard. We can begin to turn our good works done out of gratitude into means of paying
[00:01:23] him back, which is a mockery of the gospel. To fall from grace is to fall from legalism.
[00:01:29] Legalism says that you are not saved by God's grace alone, but rather you are saved by God's
[00:01:35] grace and your success in keeping rules. In choosing legalism, you've turned away from the
[00:01:41] all-sufficient grace of God for salvation. When you teach that salvation is through grace plus
[00:01:48] something, whatever that something is, you repudiate the whole gospel of Jesus Christ.
[00:01:55] If a person is trying to be saved by works, that person has not received true salvation,
[00:02:01] the free gift of God, through the true gospel, which declares,
[00:02:06] there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.
[00:02:11] And even our faith is a gift from God and not our own work so that no one can boast in anything
[00:02:19] other than Christ. Legalism is man's way, not God's way. Let's pray together. Father,
[00:02:28] help us to remember that it's only by your grace that we're saved. Give us the wisdom to discern those
[00:02:35] times when we begin to add to your gospel for our salvation and to repent and rest in your finished
[00:02:43] work of salvation. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen. If today's devotional encouraged you,
