[00:00:00] You are listening to My Devotional, the Daily Devotional from Dr. Michael Youssef and Leading

[00:00:06] The Way.

[00:00:08] Don't Quench the Spirit by Dr. Michael Youssef

[00:00:13] In the middle of summer it's difficult to resist the appeal of a soft drink commercial

[00:00:17] on television.

[00:00:19] No matter what brand it is, the beverage maker promises that drinking an ice cold glass

[00:00:23] of soda will quench our summer thirst.

[00:00:26] We all know that a cold drink on a hot day will not make our thirst disappear forever,

[00:00:32] but will in fact suppress it for the moment.

[00:00:35] The common English word of the word quench might confuse us when we read Scripture warning

[00:00:41] us to not quench the Spirit of God.

[00:00:44] The Greek word that's translated as quench means to extinguish.

[00:00:48] This word has a stronger meaning than temporary suppression.

[00:00:53] It means to extinguish, to snuff out or to put an end to.

[00:00:58] The modern English translation says, Don't put out the Spirit's fire.

[00:01:03] The same word can be used to describe the snuffing out of a candle.

[00:01:08] This does not mean that we can permanently remove the Holy Spirit from our lives.

[00:01:12] The Spirit is indestructible in His person and inextinguishable in His strength.

[00:01:17] Rather quenching the Spirit means we can resist something the Holy Spirit wants

[00:01:22] to do in us or through us.

[00:01:24] It's refusing to follow His leading, ignoring His warning and charging ahead to do things

[00:01:29] our way in our own timing.

[00:01:33] We all come to a crossroads where we have the opportunity to yield to the Holy Spirit

[00:01:37] or to quench the Spirit's work.

[00:01:39] We may sense that we are to serve in some way, to give money, to meet a need, or

[00:01:43] to change a destructive habit.

[00:01:45] To quench the Spirit is to say no to the Lord in these moments and to choose instead

[00:01:50] to pursue our own personal goals.

[00:01:53] Just as it's possible to disobey God even when His focus for us is abundantly clear,

[00:01:58] it's also possible for us to live in such a way that the Holy Spirit withholds His

[00:02:03] power from our lives.

[00:02:06] Have you lost the power of God by putting out the Holy Spirit's fire?

[00:02:11] Today you can repent and ask God to forgive you, then commit your day to Him.

[00:02:17] Ask God to help you obey the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit.

[00:02:21] Ask Him to renew His power and work within.

[00:02:26] Let's pray.

[00:02:27] Father, we know that You tell us in Your Word not to grieve the Holy Spirit.

[00:02:32] Today we ask You to guide us as You've promised.

[00:02:35] Help us today to obey the voice of the Holy Spirit.

[00:02:39] We pray this in the name of Jesus.

[00:02:41] Amen.
