Discovering the Forgiveness of God: September 7, 2024

David was a man with uncommon faith in the Lord. So, when he committed adultery and then murdered the woman’s husband, it was entirely out of character. Thankfully, God sent the prophet Nathan to confront David’s sin—to invite him to take the first step toward restoration. In today’s devotional, Dr. Michael Youssef examines Nathan’s parable as an allegory of David’s failure and response.

[00:00:00] You are listening to My Devotional, the Daily Devotional from Dr. Michael Youssef and Leading

[00:00:06] The Way.

[00:00:09] Discovering the Forgiveness of God by Dr. Michael Youssef

[00:00:14] David was a man with uncommon faith in the Lord.

[00:00:18] So when he committed adultery and then murdered the woman's husband, it was completely out

[00:00:23] of character.

[00:00:24] Thankfully, God sent the prophet Nathan to confront David's sin to invite him to take

[00:00:28] the first step toward restoration.

[00:00:31] Nathan told David a parable about a rich man and a poor man.

[00:00:35] The rich man had plenty of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had one little lamb.

[00:00:40] He cared for the lamb as though it were his own daughter, even letting it sleep in his

[00:00:44] arms.

[00:00:45] One day a traveler arrived at the rich man's house, but rather than preparing a meal with

[00:00:50] one of his own animals, the rich man stole the poor man's lamb and served it to his

[00:00:56] guest.

[00:00:56] When David heard this, he was outraged.

[00:00:59] But in 2 Samuel 12-7, Nathan dropped a bomb.

[00:01:04] You are the man.

[00:01:07] In Nathan's parable, the poor man was Uriah, the lamb was Bathsheba, and the reason that

[00:01:14] promoted the rich man's act was the traveler who represents David's restless desire, his

[00:01:21] wondering eyes.

[00:01:22] The traveler symbolizes the invasive thoughts that enter our minds when we have neglected

[00:01:28] to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

[00:01:32] Just as the rich man stole the lamb from the poor man to please his guest, so David

[00:01:37] had stolen Bathsheba from Uriah to please his wondering eyes.

[00:01:42] David was struck by the meaning of the parable and immediately confessed, I have

[00:01:47] sinned against the Lord.

[00:01:48] David was never perfect or sinless, but his heart longed to please God.

[00:01:54] That's why he immediately owned up to his responsibilities and accepted the consequences

[00:02:00] with courage.

[00:02:02] God forgave David fully, but David's sin left its share of scars.

[00:02:07] While the forgiveness of God wipes away our sin and shame, it does not alter the

[00:02:12] fact that sin is a transgression of righteousness and has terrible consequences.

[00:02:17] You see, God forgives sin at an enormous cost.

[00:02:21] He watched his son die on the cross to atone for our sin.

[00:02:25] Therefore we must remain vigilant against sin and keep a short account with God, confessing

[00:02:30] our sins and repenting as soon as we are convicted by the Holy Spirit.

[00:02:35] Sometimes the scars of disobedience will remain for a long time.

[00:02:39] But don't let those scars remind you only of the act of disobedience.

[00:02:44] Let them above all.

[00:02:45] Remind you of the grace of Christ, of love and forgiveness of the Lord.

[00:02:52] Let's pray together.

[00:02:54] Lord, forgive us for the ways that we've sinned against others and thereby against you.

[00:03:00] We repent.

[00:03:01] We long for your forgiveness and restoration.

[00:03:04] Give us the courage to seek reconciliation with those we've harmed.

[00:03:08] We pray this in the name of Jesus.

[00:03:10] Amen.
