An Exercise in Futility: September 14, 2024

The story of God’s confusing the languages at the tower of Babel is familiar. What is less familiar is the rebellion that motivated the tower’s construction. In today’s devotional, Dr. Michael Youssef warns against the Babylonian revival happening in our day.

[00:00:00] You are listening to MY Devotional, the Daily Devotional from Dr. Michael Youssef and Leading The Way.

[00:00:08] An Exercise in Futility by Dr. Michael Youssef.

[00:00:13] The story of God's Confusing the Languages of the Tower of Babel is a familiar one.

[00:00:18] What is less familiar is the rebellion that motivated the tower's construction.

[00:00:23] A famed warrior named Nimrod attempted to build the Babylonian structure as a symbol of human effort

[00:00:29] to find contentment apart from God.

[00:00:33] The Bible tells us that Nimrod was a proud and powerful king who could not comprehend serving anyone.

[00:00:40] So he attempted to prove that he had no need of God.

[00:00:43] In fact, he devoted his life to building a civilization in opposition to God's authority.

[00:00:49] Although Nimrod's tower was constructed in ancient times, it might surprise you to know that there was a Babylonian revival

[00:00:56] in our time. This pagan revival was fostered by a host of popular practices including

[00:01:03] Territ Cards, Horoscopes and Psychic Hotlines.

[00:01:07] The price tag of this growing interest in pagan spirituality is astronomical.

[00:01:12] In both its financial and spiritual impact, as many people have destroyed their lives by acting on advice from psychics and shamans.

[00:01:22] If they had only sought God's counsel and searched the word of God, they could have been spared untold pain.

[00:01:30] Nimrod's Tower was in many ways the next step in a progression of human rebellion against God.

[00:01:37] Adam and Eve send but settled near the Garden of Eden remaining close to God's presence.

[00:01:42] Cain murdered his brother and then ran from God, settling in the land of nod.

[00:01:48] Nimrod took this progression of sin, several steps further, establishing an entire civilization in opposition to God.

[00:01:57] This same arrogant mindset continues to rule those who refuse God's authority.

[00:02:03] Every disease, sickness, heartache and pain result from original sin.

[00:02:08] Many people reject Christ's sacrifice, the only means of salvation, choosing instead to try to conquer sin's consequences on their own terms.

[00:02:18] Many believe that given enough money and time we can do anything.

[00:02:23] Nimrod's actions reflect this same attitude. He made a God of his own ambition and pride, but he found that God's decrees can't be defied for very long.

[00:02:34] As we read the biblical account of Nimrod and the Tower of Babel, we see the danger of striving to quail our spiritual discontent outside of God's plan for humanity.

[00:02:46] The only reliable spiritual guidance available to us is God's un-airing direction. Let's pray together.

[00:02:53] Father, we know that we often try to do things on our own and our own strength without asking for your help, so we pray that you would help us realize just how much we need you.

[00:03:04] Alone, we are weak. But in your strength, we know all things are possible. We pray this in the name of Jesus, amen.
