In a world where finances fluctuate, relationships disappoint, and the future seems unpredictable, we all crave a sense of security. But what if the things we cling to can’t truly keep us safe?

In this episode of Candid Conversations, Jonathan Youssef explores the universal longing for security through the lens of one of Scripture’s most moving stories, the journey of Ruth. Drawing wisdom from Ruth chapter 2, Jonathan invites you to consider:

  • Where are you placing your trust?
  • What do you run to when life feels shaky?
  • Could there be a deeper, unshakeable refuge you’re missing?

You’ll hear how Ruth, a foreigner with nothing left to lose, risked everything to care for her mother-in-law, and how her faith led her straight into God’s providence. Discover how God’s invisible hand works even in your hardest seasons, providing protection, provision, and hope in unexpected ways.

Whether you feel bitter and empty like Naomi, vulnerable and courageous like Ruth, or in a position to bless like Boaz, this episode will encourage you to find your true security, not in what you can build or protect, but under the loving wing of the God who sees you.

Listen now and rediscover the only place of lasting security.

[00:00:06] Hello friends, welcome back to Candid Conversations. I'm Jonathan Youssef. I want to thank you for spending a few moments with me today. Let's talk about security. Not the kind you get at the airport or outside a concert venue. I'm talking about the kind of security we all long for deep down. The kind that makes us feel safe when everything else feels uncertain or unstable.

[00:00:36] Let me start with a name some of you might recognize. Elizabeth Taylor. She was born in London in the 1930s, became a childhood star in the 40s, and a Hollywood icon in the 50s. By the time her story wrapped up, she had been married eight times. One of those times she remarried the same person, which I suppose happens when you lose count.

[00:01:01] Her net worth was between $600 million and a billion dollars when she died. You'd think with all those marriages, there wouldn't be much left. But here's the thing. She had set up a trust to protect her assets. Why? Most likely because she knew those relationships wouldn't last. It was a legal way of saying, these are mine and you can't have them. It's not exactly a romantic gesture.

[00:01:30] But can we blame her? She wanted security. Because here's the truth. This world can be an insecure place. People take advantage of us. Circumstances shift. So we find ways to hold on to what we value. Sometimes tightly, maybe even too tightly. But the question we need to ask is, where are we placing our security?

[00:01:58] Today I want to invite you into one of the most beautiful stories in Scripture. A story about loss, risk, provision, and yes, real security. It's the story of Ruth, specifically chapter 2. If you're able, take a moment and read Ruth 1 and 2 sometime today. If you're driving or doing dishes, no worries. I'll walk you through it. So here's where we are.

[00:02:27] Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi have gone through incredible pain. Famine. The loss of husbands. And they've returned to Naomi's homeland, Judah, with very little. Naomi is bitter, literally. She tells people to call her Mara, which means bitter. She's not looking for hope. Not scanning the horizon for light. But the Bible tells us it was the beginning of the harvest.

[00:02:56] Something is coming. Enter Boaz. Now, we as readers get some insider information. He's a wealthy relative of Naomi's late husband, a man of character and strength. But Naomi, she doesn't even mention him. She's too buried in grief to see what God might be up to. Ruth steps up.

[00:03:23] She offers to go glean in the fields, basically to follow the harvesters and gather the leftover grain. It's a risky move, especially for a woman in that era, especially for a foreigner from Moab. But she does it anyway, out of love for Naomi. And scripture says, she happened in the field of Boaz. Now, that's a bit of a wink from our author.

[00:03:52] Ruth didn't just happen to be there. God's invisible hand is all over this story. Boaz arrives and he notices her. And he asks, whose young woman is this? Now, I know today that might sound a little bit off. But back then, this was about understanding her situation. Was she someone's daughter? Someone's wife? Where does she belong? Where does she belong? And the answer is, no one.

[00:04:22] She's lost everything. She left her family, homeland, and gods to follow Naomi and seek shelter under the wings of the God Yahweh. Boaz hears this and responds remarkably. He tells his workers not to touch her. He invites her to stay close to his women. He gives her protection, provision, and dignity.

[00:04:51] And Ruth is shocked. She falls on her face and says, why have I found favor in your eyes? I am a foreigner. Boaz doesn't praise her for her hard work alone. He recognizes something deeper. Faith. You've come to take refuge under the wings of the Lord, he says. Friends, this is huge. Ruth didn't earn her way into blessing. She trusted.

[00:05:21] She risked. She placed her security not in a man, not in a trust fund, not even in her own effort, but in God. And how does God respond? With abundance. Boaz doesn't just let her glean. He tells his men to pull out extra stocks and drop them for her. He makes sure she has a meal.

[00:05:47] And when she brings everything home to Naomi, nearly 30 pounds of grain, Naomi is stunned. She asks, who noticed you? And when she hears it was Boaz, the light finally breaks through her bitterness. She praises the Lord. She sees that God had not forgotten her. That's the shift. God's providence was there all along through Ruth's faithfulness, Boaz's kindness, the timing of the harvest.

[00:06:17] Naomi couldn't see it yet. So here's what I want to ask you. Where do you look for security? Is it in your finances? Your job? Relationships? Success? Or have you flown under the wing of the God who provides, protects, sees you, knows you?

[00:06:45] Ruth teaches us that true security comes not from what we can build for ourselves, but in taking refuge under God's wing. And when we do, we find more than we imagined. We find comfort, provision, abundance, identity. And here's the most beautiful part.

[00:07:13] Ruth's story doesn't end in the fields. Once, Boaz redeems her. And from their line comes King David. And from David's line comes Jesus, the redeemer of it all.

[00:07:31] So whether you feel like you're coming home bitter like Naomi, or risking everything like Ruth, or standing in a position to bless like Boaz, the invitation is the same. Come under his wing. Come back to the only place of true security. Let's be people marked by that kind of faith. People who find our security in him.

[00:07:59] So much so that we can live generously, love boldly, and trust fully. Thank you for spending time with me today. If this encouraged you, would you consider sharing it with a friend? And don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss the next episode. Until next time, I'm Jonathan Youssef.
