Standing in the Desert: A Lesson in Forever

Imagine with me: we are standing in the vast, open expanse of a desert at sunset. The sky is awash in orange, pink, and gold, and the horizon seems to stretch endlessly. The teacher turns to us and asks, “Do you know how to say ‘forever’ in Hebrew?” I reply, “L’Olam.”

He nods and explains, “L’Olam means forever — but more than that, it means ‘to the vanishing point’.” As I gaze at the setting sun, he continues, “God is L’Olam — forever, beyond forever, to the vanishing point where all things fade into eternity.”

The Vanishing Point and the Cross

This image of eternity leads us to a profound truth: when Jesus took our sins on the cross, where did he take them? To the vanishing point, to “L’Olam,” beyond the horizon of time and space, into eternity. God, in His infinite love, carried our sins away to a place where they vanish, forever erased.

It’s as if our sins are carried from the east to the west — from the plane of infinity to the vanishing point. The scapegoat on the holiest day of the year carried away the sins of the people, crossing the expanse from west to east, into the infinite beyond. And in Christ, our sins are taken to the vanishing point — forever gone, forever distant from us.

The Infinite Distance Between God and Us

The teacher asks, “How far is the distance between God and us? Between His holiness and our sinfulness?” I respond, “It’s infinite.” And that’s the key to understanding why salvation is impossible by our own efforts.

God, the King of the universe, is from “Olam,” from forever, and to “Olam,” forever. His love spans the infinite distance — from the moment we fall into sin to the moment we are redeemed. As Psalm 103:12 reminds us: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

From Everlasting to Everlasting: The Love of God

The Hebrew phrase “Melekh HaOlam” — the King of the universe — encapsulates this sovereignty over eternity. God’s throne is established “from the rising of the sun to its setting,” from everlasting to everlasting, His name to be praised.

This perspective invites us to ponder the length of God’s love — a love that begins before time, persists through eternity, and extends beyond forever. The love that spans the vanishing point is a love that transforms and renews.
