The Sabbath of Ages: A Shadow of the Coming Kingdom
Inspired by Jonathan Cahn’s The Book of Mysteries — Godstream Radio Scripture Blog
Imagine sitting around a table just after sunset, the beginning of a sacred moment. The teacher invites a small group of students to join him for a Sabbath meal. The atmosphere is filled with anticipation as candles are lit, prayers are offered, and the meal begins. It’s a simple scene, yet it opens a profound insight into a mystery woven into the fabric of time — the Sabbath of ages.
What is the Sabbath?
The teacher asks, and the students respond: a day set apart, a day of rest, the last day of the week, a day of the Lord. Yes, all true. But the teacher reveals there is more—a divine shadow and a future reality embedded in this sacred day.
The Shadow of the Coming Age
The teacher explains that the Sabbath holds a mystery—it’s a shadow of what is to come. Just as the weekly Sabbath comes at the end of the week, so the Sabbath age will come at the end of history. It will be a Sabbath of ages, a divine age of peace, rest, and divine harmony.
In this future age, nations will cease from war, burdens will be lifted from Israel, and peace will blanket the earth. The lion will lie down with the calf, and the earth will be fully consecrated to God’s presence. The Sabbath age will be a holy age, an eternal rest, a divine blessing that covers all creation.
Messiah and the Sabbath
When Jesus spoke of the Sabbath, what did He say? He declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” This is a crucial point. The Lordship of Messiah over the Sabbath points to His authority over the coming age—a future age of divine rest and peace.
But here’s the key for us today: even before that age arrives, we can live in its blessings. If Messiah is Lord of the Sabbath, then making Him Lord of every part of our lives brings the Sabbath age into our present experience. Where Jesus reigns, there is the kingdom—there is the Sabbath.
Living in the Sabbath Now
The teacher’s words echo a divine truth: we don’t have to wait for the future to taste the rest and peace of the Sabbath age. When we surrender every part of our lives to Jesus, His Lordship begins to transform us into citizens of that eternal rest.
Our Mission:
Make Jesus the Lord of the Sabbath more than just a day. Live daily in His presence, in His peace, and in His promises. The secret to dwelling in the Sabbath age even now is to walk with Messiah as Lord over your heart, your family, your work, and your soul.
Scriptural Foundations:
Exodus 20:8-11:** Remember the Sabbath day, keep it holy, for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and rested on the seventh.
Isaiah 11:1-9:** A future kingdom of peace where the wolf dwells with the lamb, and the earth is full of the knowledge of the Lord.
Mark 2:27-28:** Jesus declares, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Reflection:
The Sabbath is more than a day of rest; it’s a shadow of the eternal rest promised in Christ’s coming kingdom. Living in the Lordship of Messiah aligns us with that divine age of peace and holiness. As we honor the Sabbath, let us also surrender every part of our lives to Jesus, so we can experience the blessings of the Sabbath of ages—today, and forever.
Discussion Questions:
How does understanding the Sabbath as a shadow of the coming kingdom impact your view of rest and holiness?
In what areas of your life do you need to invite Jesus as Lord to experience the Sabbath age now?
How can we live daily in the peace and presence of the Lord, even before the full realization of the Sabbath age?
