The purpose of suffering
The Bible teaches that when Christians suffer, they should arm themselves with a specific attitude that enables them to cease from sin and focus on doing God's will instead of human desires.
This teaching is found specifically in the first letter of Peter:

"Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God." - 1 Peter 4:1-2 (NIV)

Key Concepts

  • Arm Yourselves with the Same Attitude: Believers are instructed to adopt Christ's mindset when facing suffering. This means having the same purpose or resolve that Jesus had: a commitment to obey God's will regardless of the physical or emotional pain involved.

  • Suffering in the Body and Ceasing from Sin: The core idea is that the experience of suffering for the sake of righteousness helps break the power and appeal of sinful desires. When faced with the choice between yielding to sin for comfort or enduring hardship to obey God, choosing the latter reinforces a break from a life of self-centered sin and a commitment to a life of holiness.

  • Living for God's Will: The outcome of this attitude is a life no longer driven by worldly lusts and passions, but by the will and purpose of God.
This passage does not imply that suffering itself automatically purifies a person of all sin, but rather that a willing mindset to endure suffering for God's sake is a powerful weapon in the spiritual battle against sin and a sign of true conversion.
