The Secret Name of God
Inspired by The Book of Mysteries by Jonathan Cahn
I sat on the bottom ledge of my window, gazing at the star-filled night sky.
The teacher looked at me and said, “God has a name—a secret name—that belongs to you. It’s a name that only you and He fully understand.”
I was puzzled.
He explained: “When Jacob wrestled with God, God asked for his name. When Jacob spoke it, God changed his name from Jacob to Israel. But did you know that Jacob also asked God for His name that night?”
And what was the answer?
“It doesn’t say,” the teacher replied, “but soon after, Jacob revealed the name of God by calling Him ‘El Elohi Yisrael’—‘the God of Israel.’”
What was Jacob saying?
“He was declaring, ‘The God of Israel is also the God of me.’”
Throughout Scripture, God refers to Himself as the “God of Israel.” Why? Because it’s His will to join His name to His people. And if you are born again, Scripture says you are also Israel—part of God’s family.
So, the teacher explained: “You must also give God a new name—your name. The God of John, the God of Mary—He wants to be the God of you. His name is sacred, and He desires to join His identity with yours.”
His secret name isn’t just a title; it’s a sacred truth—that He is the God of your existence, your past, your needs, your wounds, your heart. It’s the name only you and He fully understand—the name that signifies His intimate love for you.
Jacob asked for God’s name and discovered it. Those who truly know Him also discover this sacred, personal name—the God of you.
As the teacher left, I sat alone, gazing at the night sky, pondering the love of the One who bears a secret name—the God of me.
The Mission:
Speak God's secret name—the God of you. Ponder what that means. He is the God of all you are, and He has chosen your name in His heart.
Scripture in Brief:
Genesis 32:29-30 — Jacob asks for God's name and receives a blessing.
Genesis 33:20 — Jacob names the altar “El Elohi Yisrael,” declaring God as his personal God.
Psalm 18:2 — The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer.
Isaiah 48:1 — God’s name and identity are sacred and personal.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself as the God of me. Thank You that You have a sacred name that is personal and intimate. Help us to understand that You desire to join Your name to ours—to be the God of our lives, our hearts, our past, and our future. May we truly know and live in the truth that You are the God of us, and may that knowledge fill us with peace, confidence, and love. Help us to speak Your sacred name over our lives every day and walk confidently in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.Reflection Questions:
