The Faces of God: A Reflection Inspired by The Book of Mysteries

On a bright, sunny day, I found myself standing beside a pool formed from desert rains—its still waters mirroring the sky above. As I gazed into my reflection, I noticed something extraordinary: another face appeared beside my own. It was the face of the teacher, standing quietly over my shoulder.

He gently spoke, “Imagine,” he said, “seeing the face of God.”
I looked closer, curious.
He pointed to the word for face in Hebrew—“panim”.

I noticed something intriguing: the word ends with ‘im’, which in Hebrew signifies a plural.

So, the face isn’t just one face, but faces. He explained, “To speak of the face of God in Hebrew is to speak of the faces of God.” But what does a face truly represent? It’s not the essence of a person or being, but the outward appearance—the way we recognize and relate to someone. Our faces are windows into the person’s identity, their love, their kindness, their presence.

How do we see the face of God?
We see His faces in His blessings, His provisions, and in every good thing that has touched our lives. We see His face in the love woven into those who have cared for us, in the kindness shown during our times of need, and in the encouragement and help of His people. Every act of love, every gift, is a reflection of His face—His “panim”—the many faces of His divine presence in our daily lives.

But often, we don’t realize it.
Just as Mary Magdalene looked into the face of Jesus and didn’t recognize Him at first, we too may overlook the face of God in our encounters. Yet, Jesus promised, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” If we look with eyes of faith, love, and purity, we will recognize His face—His many faces—in the world around us.

When we allow our lives to be vessels of His love and open our hearts to His Spirit, we become reflections of His face. Others will see Him in us. Our actions, our words, our kindness—these are the faces of God shining through us.

So, today’s mission is simple yet profound:
Make it your aim to see the faces of God in all their appearances—through His blessings, His people, and His creation—and be one of His faces in the world.

Remember:
In Genesis 32:30, Jacob said, “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
In Genesis 6:24-27, Noah’s obedience reflected the face of God’s righteousness.
In Matthew 5:8, Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
In 2 Corinthians 3:7, 13, 18, Paul speaks of beholding the glory of the Lord as reflected in our faces.

Look always for the good, the holy, and the beautiful.
In doing so, you will find the many faces of God—and discover that His face is always near, always shining, and always longing to be seen through you.

Let us strive to recognize and reflect His faces each day.
Because in seeing Him, we find ourselves transformed—and in shining His face, we become His living testament of love.

Blessings on your journey to see His many faces.
God bless you!
