Day 283: The End of the Scroll
Inspired by The Book of Mysteries by Jonathan Cahn
I was taken into a quiet chamber filled with ancient scrolls, each holding the story of God's unfolding plan. On the table before me was the scroll of the Torah, rolled out to its very end. The teacher’s voice was gentle yet profound as he spoke:
“Do you remember, my friend, what I told you about the most mysterious day of the Hebrew year? Shimini Aatzaret—the gathering of the eighth day?”
I nodded, curious.
He continued, “It’s the last day of the sacred year—the day that marks the end, yet also the beginning of eternity. On this day, the scroll, which has been unrolled and read during every Sabbath of the year, is finally rolled back up. It’s a sacred act, symbolizing the conclusion of one season and the start of the next.”
The teacher paused, then added, “When you read the prophecies concerning the end of ages, you find this imagery—‘the heaven shall be rolled up like a scroll,’ as Isaiah wrote (Isaiah 34:4). Revelation echoes this, ‘and the sky departed as a scroll when it is rolled up’ (Revelation 6:14). At the very end, Revelation describes a new heaven and new earth coming forth, where ‘earth and the heaven fled away’ (Revelation 20:11; 22:1-5). The old creation is gone, the story finished—the scroll complete.”
A quiet hush settled as he looked into my eyes. “And then, the day after the end—Shemini Aatzaret, the eighth day—the day of forever—begins.”
He gently lifted the scroll, “Do you know what is read at the end before it is rolled up?”
I shook my head.
“The final words on this scroll speak of the journey’s end. Moses, in his last act, climbs the mountain to catch his first glimpse of the promised land—his departure from this earthly life to be with God (Deuteronomy 34). The Israelites have completed their wilderness journey. Shemini Aatzaret reminds us that our earthly journey too must come to an end, that the old must pass away before the new can begin.”
He paused, voice soft but firm. “This life isn’t the destination; it’s the journey toward what lies beyond. Every moment should be lived in light of that hope—the day when the old flees away, and we see the fulfillment of what we’ve only dreamed of as the scroll is rolled up.”
The challenge is clear: What in your life do you need to bring to an end to step into the new God has prepared for you? Roll up the scroll today.
Scriptural Reflection:
Deuteronomy 34:** Moses’ final moments on Mount Nebo, viewing the Promised Land before passing away.
Isaiah 34:4:** The heavens being rolled up like a scroll in judgment and end-times imagery.
Revelation 6:14:** The sky receding like a scroll at the return of Christ and the final judgment.
Revelation 20:11:** The earth and sky fleeing away before the Great White Throne Judgment.
Revelation 22:** The promise of the new heaven and new earth, where God dwells with His people.
Let this be a reminder that the Alpha and Omega—the beginning and the end—are in God's hands. As we reflect on the end of the scroll, may we also consider what needs to be rolled up in our lives so that we can embrace the new God desires to bring forth.
Live today with the end in mind, trusting in His eternal promise.
