The Bible warns that self-deception is a dangerous, common folly arising from pride and a hardened heart, leading people to believe they are righteous, wise, or sinless when they are not.
It is characterized by hearing God's Word without acting on it, falsely claiming to have no sin, and overestimating one's spiritual maturity.

  • The Deceitful Heart: Jeremiah 17:9 describes the human heart as "deceitful above all things," suggesting a natural inclination to fool ourselves.

  • Hearing without Doing: James 1:22 commands, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says".

  • Denying Sin: 1 John 1:8 states that claiming to be without sin is self-deception, indicating the truth is not in that person.

  • False Wisdom and Pride: Galatians 6:3 warns that thinking oneself important when they are nothing is self-deception. Similarly, 1 Corinthians 3:18 warns against thinking oneself wise in worldly terms.

  • The Role of Pride: Obadiah 1:3 notes that "the pride of your heart has deceived you".

  • Worthless Religion: James 1:26 claims that failing to control one's tongue while claiming to be religious means one is deceiving their own heart and their religion is useless.
    Consequences and Antidotes
Self-deception leads to a "fall" (Proverbs 16:18) and, in extreme cases, a false sense of salvation that will be exposed at judgment (Matthew 7:21-23).
The antidote is daily obedience to Scripture, which acts as a mirror to correct and guide (James 1:23-25).
    In conclusion:
    I repent!
“Nature never deceives us, it is we who deceive ourselves.”
    Jean Jacques Rousseau.
    For example:
Nature did not make me a compulsive overeater. My hunger pangs are like erybody else's: they tell me when I must take nourishment to sustain my life When I began eating to satisfy emotional hunger, this simple mechanism went off kilter and it stayed that way until I became abstinent. The irony of compulsive overeat ing is that it eliminates hunger and intensifies the craving.
Today, I live as nature intended me to live: I eat the food I need, with all the pleasure, enjoyment and freedom
    God wants me to have.
For today: Normal eaters may occasionally indulge in eating to satisfy needs other than hunger, but I am abstaining from such uses of food.
