Sermon Snippet :
Philippians 3:18-20
18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
19 Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Cursed be the social lies that warp us ,
from the living truth.
Alfred Lord Tennyson
"Come now, one bite can't hurt you” - It can if you're a compulsive overeater.
If I believe the well-meaning people who understand nothing of my overeating affliction;
I may be a lonely audience of one to the outcome.
But if I can learn so many other things through practice, I can learn to say No.
Until then, I may have to give up old friends, old places, old activities It is called going to any lengths to overcome my overeating habits.
For today: I am always aware of who I am and what my limitations are. I can turn down food and drink that may be dangerous for me as easily as I can get out of the way of a speeding car.
Proverbs 23:2 (Direct Advice on Restraint)
"Put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite [or given to gluttony or a big eater]."
This is the most direct passage regarding controlling the stomach. It is a metaphorical warning to exert extreme self-control over your cravings, especially in situations of temptation or abundance.
Proverbs 31
Give not your strength unto women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings.
4 It is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
6 Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
8 Open your mouth for the ignorant in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
I.e. pray & intercede for them.
